Why is this a PSA 1 ?!?!

I was thinking of getting this card re-graded as it returned a PSA 1.

I’m puzzled by the grade as it looks like a minimum 2 grade. I’ve seen worse 2s.

Any opinions as to why it was graded so low?

Card observations:

- No major creases
- Few wrinkles on the right side visible at an angle only
- Decent registration
- Good centering
- Some staining on the back
- Corners are a little soft

Thanks.

The lower end of the scale is where we see the most discrepancies between grades. I could see this card being a 2, or at least a 1.5, on any given day. However, I would expect this card to sell around a 2 grade anyway, so a regrade may not really be worth the time and cost. It's a really nice card regardless of the number on the flip.

Edited to answer your question. My guess for the reason for a 1 is the accumulation of all the minor flaws added up to a 1 in the graders opinion.

Corners are a little soft?

If you were a new collector unfamiliar with T-206 set then you may not know that the corners are not supposed to be rounded.

Philosophy

Id rather own a 1 that would sell like a 2 than a 2 that would sell like a 1. Jus sayin..........

Yes, definitely not sharp at all.

I would call it a 2. But that being said, I would also say those corner wrinkles are light creases.

I wonder if more objective grading via computers would fix a lot of the discrepancies? I understand that an “auto grading” program is in the works?

True. Definitely could be defined as light as it’s not showing on the backside.

It's a nice card, but I've seen even better ones than that. Ones can be all over the place. At that level the number is meaningless and the eye appeal is everything.

I do not collect these cards and I have no interest in grading. Just neutral observation of the card as it appears. The blue lines are the probable creases and wrinkles I see.

+1. I've never understood a system that gives this card the same grade as one driven over a by a tank in the mud. With ten points to work with, TPAs should be able to create some separation between those scenarios.

I agree that a 1 is pretty harsh. I think if you sent this is to PSA 100 times, you'd get a 1.5 a higher % of the time than any other grade. I also think a 2 would be reasonable. PSA has been tougher on corners in the last couple years than they used to be. Here's a 2 in my collection where the corners caused a pretty harsh grade.

glue residue

I am guessing there is some kind of residue on the back. PSA used to default anything with residue on the back, even if it didn't cause paper loss, to a 1. That could have changed but I know that I got stung by it a couple of times.

Yikes. That could be a PSA 4 back in the day. Maybe there's something else I'm not seeing with the scan. But its certainly worthy of a VG 3.

It's a nice 1 but it doesn't shock me. Looks pretty dirty, some creasing in the corners and very rounded corners. I don't think this would get a 2 if you resubmit, maybe a 1.5.

Check out this 2, hahaha

Stain on front, a few bites missing, and at least a dime size paper loss on back

wondo 11-27-2020 03:05 PM

There’s writing on the back.

That looks like it should be a higher grade as well.

I gave up trying to figure out what they do with stains after this one. It's barely an 8 anyway with the L/R centering.

It's like the brown on the left border doesn't exist
