1941 Play Ball....1942??

Posted By: dennis
in the post war side dave h. posted a link to an article in SCD written by george verchek about irv lerner. i cut and pasted the reference mr. lerner made to the 1941 play ball set.
"Irv told me about the 1942 Play Balls. I thought, wait a minute Irv, there was no such thing unless you are talking about some collector issues. I was wrong again, according to Lerner.
He said that the higher numbers of the 1941 set were actually printed in 1942 and the rest of the set was reprinted at the same time. If you look at the back bottom left corner of the Play Balls, some low-numbered cards will have the copyright shown as 1941 and others will be just . The -only versions are from the 1942 printing and include all the higher numbers. The highest number I found in my collection with the 1941 version was No. 42 of the 72 cards issued"

after reading this interesting story i looked at my 1941 play balls and the highest # in my collection w/the 1941 copyrite was #23.

does anyone have a play ball with a 1941 copyrite after # 48?

back has 1940 stts in the write-up

1941 Play Ball....1942??

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
What Irv stated was my understanding of the set as well. The early 1-48 series was sold in 1941, and those are found with the copyright 1941 date on back. Then in 1942 there were 72 cards produced (all without the copyright date on back.) Thus all cards 49-72 are found without the copyright, and cards 1-48 can be found with or without them. The fact that there were 2 printings of 1-48 is what makes them easier to find than the cards #ed 49-72.

-Rhett

Posted By: Hal
Gerald Glasser wrote a very good article about this in Issue #8 of the Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector magazine. Pages 10-11 discuss specifically whether some of the cards may have been printed or sold into 1942. Hope this helps!

1941 Play Ball....1942??

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
The 1941 Play Ball cards were designed and printed by the Bowman Gum Co. (GUM, INC.) early
in 1941. And, cards #1 - 48 (Lo# series) were in the stores by mid 1941.

Also in 1941, Bowman started producing their WAR Gum series of a cards (see scan). The 1st
series of these cards was issued in the Fall of 1941 and became very popular after Dec 7 '41.
The last card (#132) in this series (shown here) depicts the battle of Stalingrad, that ended
Feb 1943 with the defeat of the Germans, at the cost of 1.5 Million lives.

This card has a 1942 Copyright on the back of it. And, the point I am trying to illustrate here
is that Bowman continued to issue GUM cards well after WWII started. Furthermore, after the
amazing BB season ended in 1941, Warren Bowman (a shrewd business man) quickly realized
that he had to print up more of the BB cards, so all 72 Play Ball cards without the 1941 Copy-
right were issued in late 1941 thru 1942.

TED Z
