1939 Playball #126???

Hi. I was just reviewing the checklist for the 1939 Playball set and noticed the #126 card is "not issued" according to the Beckett guide. Does anyone know why this is? I looked at the Frank Slocum Baseball Cards book and it shows a #126 (White Sox player, maybe John Whitehead?). Can anyone shine some light on this please? I searched the previous threads and didn't find anything so forgive me if this has been covered previously. Thanks!

Longtime Philly area baseball hobbyist Irving Lerner created a filler for the missing #126 in Gum, Inc.'s 1939 Play Ball set. Back in 1975, Lerner (who founded and published Who's Who in Card Collecting) issued a very well executed #126 of Monty Stratton, the great but ill-fated Chicago White Sox pitcher.

Steve- that is a neat card. Thanks for posting it.

I have that book, Who's Who in Collecting, by Lerner. It's a great hobby reference...

How many of the Dorskinds are listed in it?

Thanks Steve. I looked all over the internet but couldn't find any info on #126 except "not issued".

Tony... You are quite welcome but I'll bet your dad is aware of the card and possibly has one lying around. Steve

No Cubbies and only two Pale Hose in the 39 PB set. I read somewhere (probably here) Gum Inc. was in competition with Wrigley's and the Chicago players were almost all locked up. #126 was likely pulled due to a contract dispute.

Love the 39's-nice clear, uncluttered photos and better card stock than they would use the next year. I am generally not a B&W card guy but the 39's are aces.

Monty Stratton

Here's my card. Thanks Steve for the background story regarding this card. I didn't realize Irv Lerner was the originator of it.

Incidently, if anyone here has not seen the "Monty Stratton Story ", starring Jimmy Stewart....I highly recommend seeing it.
Jimmy Stewart's performance in the role of Stratton is excellent. Bill Dickey, Jimmy Dykes, Luke Appling and other BB players
are in this movie.

I recently picked up one of these Monty Stratton cards (it happens to be autographed by him). Does anyone know what it’s worth? Thanks! Joe

As I travel down Interstate 30 to Dallas you go right past Monty Stratton Parkway in Greenville, Texas. It is just about a half mile past the Audie Murphy statue and museum. which are both right on the interstate.
