2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, got an unopened 1971 Topps Super Baseball unopened pack and have no idea the value. Can't find anything online. Can anyone give me a ballpark value? Looking to sell so I need something to go by.
Thanks,
Tony

Tony---how can you tell it is 70 and not 71 ? Can you see one of the players and therefore know which it is ? I have a couple of these packs but have been unable to distinguish between 70 and 71.

I can see Curt Flood on the back. He was only in the 1971 set.

While almost 3 years old, here are two older ebay sales for unopened 1971 Super packs. Based on the title, the seller was able to determine the year by viewing the bottom card in the pack.

No help on pricing but I like the advertisement on the back. I wonder what one of those are worth now?

Well, I don't think it was very lucky for the whale!

Thanks for the response Tony. I can see Perez on the pack I keep with my 71 set but can not discern the the player on the back of the pack I keep with my 70 set.

Good luck on your sale

This may have been discussed before but does the code in the box at the top of the player's bat yield any information? Even if it does, I can not see the whole code on my unopened pack. The back is similar to the OP's pack.

Here is a more recent sale on ebay for a 1970 pack.

Mike---Dave Hornish may know otherwise but it was my understanding they used the same wrappers for both years. Can not read code on my two unopened either. They both end in 01-0. I do have two wrappers that both have the code 0-387-96-01-0.

My unopened packs and wrappers have ads for the whale, a ring a battleship and a camera

I picked up this test wrapper somewhere along the line. It has no code. It does not show on the scan but the label is on a white wrapper

I don't believe that code denotes the year. Did it have gum with it? If it did, it should have had a UPC code, which should have the lot and year in it

As it says on the wrapper "With one stick bubble gum".

My unopened pack has a stick of gum in it. (Not all in one e piece anymore!).

The last part of the code “01-0” indicates the version and year designed/manufactured

I think the same wrapper was used for 70 and 71 as I've never seen another style; even the small 1969 Super wrapper used similar lettering.

The last digit of the code represents year of conception in a way, it was assigned once a set was green-lit for production. For non-sports sets it can sometimes lag behind the year of issue for sets released early in a calendar year but for sports sets it seems like it also works for year of issue as I believe that's how they had to account to the leagues and/or players unions. There's probably a couple of sets that don't follow this pattern as well, Topps being Topps.
