My Hank Aaron run
2 Attachment(s)
I've been collecting Aaron cards since the 1980's. A few years ago I started getting them graded. I've used both PSA and SGC, so I can't really do a registry set, but that's okay since most are low to mid grade. I've always been more interested in getting an example of the card rather than getting the best example. I've also included the checklists which have Aaron's basic card on them, and some related Braves logo, etc. cards. My son is going to inherit the cards, so I've started scanning them in for a list what I have. I thought the scans would also make a good thread. So here they are, loosely arranged by year.

Great cards Robert. Here are a couple more odd ball Hanks

Beautiful collection. This may be a stupid question, but why the two rookies? Is one a variation? I have a number of duplicates in my collection but always curious as to how others approach a player collection.

Nice collection!
I think Swift Meats really shouldn't have been the company to do those put togethers. |
Aaron
That is one nice collection of Aaron cards. For some reason I'm drawn to the odd-ball type of cards like the Spic and Span, Johnston Cookies, and the Bill and Bob postcard (never seen this one before...).
Thanks so much for sharing Robert! |

Got finished early, so I decided to finish out the 50's. I know that there is a problem with the Hires with tab - the tab separated and slipped under the card after the card was graded.

Great Aarons Robert. I am a fellow Aaron collector and my cards are in similar condition to yours. I have completed the Topps regular issue run, including multi player/leader/all-star cards. I don't have many of the regional or oddball items that you have so I am definitely envious of these pieces. I really like the 1955 Doubleheader. That and the 1964 Topps Stand up are my next goals. Congrats on your great collection!

Sorry about the scans of the Armour coins. My scanner does not like PSA's coin slab. Also, the first Fencebusters card is a white back.

Sweet collection of Hank! Thanks for sharing.

A few more from '60. The Braves logo tattoo is not really an Aaron, but I thought it looked pretty good and still fits in.

The 1961 Post Cereal graded A is the hand cut from box version. The 1961 Post Cereal graded 20 FAIR is the perforated, factory sheet version.

Very nice. Keep on posting them.

Nice collection! I especially like your Home Run Derby card - it sure looks much nicer than "Poor."

1962

Quite a few from 1962. The SGC Post Canadian is the perforated one; the PSA one is the hand cut from box version. I added back scans of the Exhibits - I don't know why SGC wouldn't add "black stat back" to the label. The first Salada coin is the 180 back version. The second one is the 200 back version.

Some from 1963. The SGC Peel-off is the instruction back version. The Exhibit is the red stat back version.

I have a few Topps Venezuelan in 1964. Also, an interesting card is the unperforated Stand-up. There are no factory perforations on the card.

A few variations in 1966. One checklist has "R. Sox Rookies", the other has "Red Sox Rookies". One team card has a dot between Place and National, the other does not.

#214 on the second checklist is "Dick Kelley"

1968

1968 was a good year for cards, although somewhat expensive. There were four Topps versions. There were also two versions of each checklist (although I'm not sure about the Venezuelan). I just got back four other checklists back from PSA (not scanned), but they were all MISLABELED. Looks like someone's quality control was a little off. I am waiting for a response back from PSA. There is also my only BVG graded card - a checklist proof from Topps Archives. The last scan is of the backs of the four regular 1968 Aaron's - OPC, Topps, Milton Bradley, and Venezuelan.

More variations in 1969. There is another version of the 1969 Photostamp with a different back that I don't have. The difference on the checklists is in the cropping of the player; the one on the right shows a small part of his collar, the one on the left does not. There are also two versions of the Nabisco Team Flakes and two sizes of the Kahn's.

This collection really shows how non-mainstream cards liven up a collection. I'd say my favorites of the whole run are the spic and spans, Johnston cookies, home run derby, Atlantic/transograms, and nabisco |

What a tremendous collection! My favorite is the 64 Topps Venezuelan 63 HR Leaders. 4 HOFers on any vintage card is awesome, but when it's a Venie? Unreal!!

The Daily News is a tough one. Keep them coming love the thread

Love the 1974 OPC Aaron specials... Never seen those before. Didn't see the 1973 Topps pin up... Do you need that one ? The 1973 comic is awesome !

Absolutely awesome! Great collection and thank you for sharing, was great to look through!

Thanks. Here is a picture of the '70 Dayton Daily News before grading and an even tougher circa 1980 Dayton Daily News. Neither SGC or PSA will grade the 1980 one, though. |

RobertC,
As another Aaron collector (with my father), I really question the 1980 date on your second Dayton Daily News. I await some "better proof", like to see the card in the actual newspaper or something. Let me explain: 1. I realize that this was printed as a commemorative card, with "one card every 100 years", but why not have Aaron's FINAL STATS listed (not even his 755HRs) listed in 1980 when his career ended in 1976? 2. If you look at the stats, these correspond to the end of the 1975 season, and at that time Aaron contemplated retirement, so MAYBE the card was produced at the end of that season to commemorate his legacy (as he had still broken the HR record, and over 3700 hits). 3. I have seen 1980 listed by several people as the print year of this DDN, but after 5 different inquiries to those experts, not one has been able to give me a DATE or even a MONTH when this was printed in 1980. I have scoured several months of the DDN in both early 1980 and late 1975/early 1976 with no luck. Would love to hear from you on your thoughts or knowledge on the card Thanks Dave |
Scan Request
RobertC,
It is always nice to see cards that I am still searching for (like the 1968 Plaks and the 1973 Comics, as well as Al's beautiful Aaron standup), but quite a surprise after collecting Aaron for over 10 years to see a variation that I did not know existed. The 1962 Salada coin Aaron with the 180 player back I have never seen. I quickly looked on eBay and saw several other players (low # coins) with the 180-player back variation. Is your Aaron back to same as those (displaying a completely different pattern), or is the variation only a change in the # itself? Thanks Dave |

The only evidence(?) I have for the date is that I purchased it in a lot of cards and it was in an envelope marked "1980". I agree that there is no evidence to the date. I read somewhere that it could have been printed on the 100'th anniversary of the Dayton Daily News, and that another player's card was printed on the next day to commemorate their next 100 years, but I never followed it up. I like the card and should have done more research, but I never got around to it. I really would like to get the full story on it. |
1967 Topps Disc

Thanks for imparting both your knowledge and that 67 Topps disc. Another "killer" item from your amazing collection.

RobertC,
Same story here. Will keep looking for conformation some where Dave |
1975

In 1975 we have Topps, OPC, and Topps Mini versions. Although Aaron was traded to the Brewers on November 2, 1974, he still appears in the 1975 Braves team card (back row, second from right).
|
Thanks Al. I don't have a '67 Disc, and your punchout is in way better shape than mine.
