Jim Brown Legacy

Looking at how dominant he was even though he retired at an early age, do you guys feel that he is underrated and/or undervalued in the collectibles hobby or do you feel he is priced accurately? I see a statistical dominance comparable to Babe Ruth yet I feel he is undervalued and undrappreciated in the hobby. I always thought his rookie should have a 52 Topps Mantle status in football. How do you guys feel?

I don't think he's underrated. He was the GOAT running back, his statistics in context of time and place are absolutely ridiculous. I don't think he's underrated because everyone seems to hold this view. His 1958 Topps rookie, a very common card, is outsold by almost nothing in Topps land. I don't follow high grade, but he sells for more than anyone except 1 or 2 Quarterbacks in a context, unlike baseball, where a single position totally dominates popularity (the 1965 Namath, which is more reflective of Namath being vastly overrated than Brown being underrated, outsells him and.... that's it? Starr and Unitas are selling for less it appears looking at eBay sold listings. I can't think of anything else off the top). Brown is already top dog in his field, which is about where he should be.

I suspect there are too many of them for it to have 52 Topps status. But if I could only own one FB card as a collector, that would be the one for sure. As it is, I own two lol.

A mid-grade is a nice four-figure card. Not much else in postwar football is, so not undervalued or underrated. Nothing compares to baseball card prices, though. His prices are the football equivalent of Mantle, Mays or Aaron. There just isn't a 1952 T Mantle magnitude postwar football card.

One of my favorite cards:

Athletes used to care about their signature. When did the chicken scratch age start, it's been a long time other than Derek Jeter.
