1949 Bowman Gray (Grey) variations

Question for the forum and possibly Ted Z.
I've read that many/most/all? of these cards are actually cut from full sheets and not issued in actual packs. I've heard that they are grey because they didn't go through the final color process and thus they were "rejects" at the time from the printing process. Does anyone know whether any of these cards were company issued in packs, or were they all hand-cut. Most of the ones I've seen that are graded by the third party grading companies are "A". But once in a while i see numerical grades, which makes me believe these examples are not hand-cut. See a Campy RC that sold on eBay tonight that was graded SGC 9. Just want to understand these better before I wade into the pool. Thanks. |

1949 BOWMAN "Slate" cards

I prefer to refer to these printing errors as "Slate" cards. Although a good majority of these Slate cards are hand-cut from BOWMAN sheets such as the one I've shown here, there are also a fair amount of these cards that were factory-cut and included in BOWMAN 5-cent packs in 1949. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...bowman49.3.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |

That's exactly what I wanted to know. So it does make sense that a card like the one I pictured could appropriately be graded with a numerical grade by a third party grader then. Thanks, Tony |
I've been collecting printing errors for years and what TPGs will grade is highly variable. SGC will numerically grade a wrong back card and a missing ink card but not a blank-back card, even if it was pack-issued.

1949 BOWMAN "Slates"....and other color printing errors

However, most of the Slate cards are cards whose backgrounds are Green, Light Blue, Orange, or Yellow pastel colors. Very rarely can you find a Slate card that is normally a Red or Dark Blue card. 1949 Slates
Thanks Ted. I have started the "challenge". I've got four of them - commons, but I've started. I am nearing completion of my PSA graded set, so after that this project will take on more focus. Thanks for your list. The four I have are ones you already have or I'd figure out how to get them to you for your more complete set.

The Name on Front Salkeld is in post 8, but here's the other Slate Salkeld I picked up recently. Fun little variants to pick up that are still pretty cheap as they aren't recognized as 'true' variations.
