Joe with his trophies: Joe is shown with two trophies he won in 1917. The trophy on the right he won in Boston by throwing a baseball 396 feet in competition against the best long-distance throwers in the American and National leagues(including Ruth). He broke all records for throwing a baseball the farthest. The trophy on the left is for outbatting Ty Cobb in a critical series in 1917. The picture of Joe was taken while he was traveling back to his native South after the baseball season. He stopped long enough between trains to pose for this picture. These trophies are still in the Jackson family..............

Thanks.....the pix is a Bain of Happy Felsch and the bat is a Game Used 1916-1919 Chick Gandil. Sorry the pix of it isn't good, the name looks better in person.

Just got this puppy back from PSA - been waiting for one at a "decent" price for a long time.

The PSA population for Game 2 is 7 now. If anyone has access to their population report, can you tell me how many total stubs from the 1919 Series have been encaps by them, just curious.

Here's a 1923 sidewritten Buck Weaver -- unfortunately I can't get a good photo of the sidewriting -- it's washed out by the flash -- I'm going to have to get someone who knows something about photography to shoot it for me.

Jeff, does that postcard designation mean it's from 1909? Just wondering since Weaver didn't make the majors till 1912.

actually I see what looks like 1912 on the card, but still curious as to the 1909 designation.

Max Stein postcards were released between 1909-1916. PSA just uses the original year of issue on the flips. Maybe they do this because they are not exactly sure what year these postcards were issued.

Scanned below is an issue of the Independent from 10/16/1920. It shows the "eight men out" on one page.

Faber would NOT have been in on it with the 8, he was a life long friend of Schalk. They knew each other in the minor league, played with each other for the Sox, and remained lifelong friends after their playing days.

Schalk even was on record saying if Faber was healthy enough to have played in that Series the conspiracy would have failed. The 8 probably wouldn't even had let him know of it, just like they didn't inform Schalk or Collins cuz they knew there was no way they'd go along.

Interesting. I had never heard that about Faber and Schalk being so close. I've got a couple more Blacksox/Cleansox on my want list for next year so hopefully we can keep this thread going.

Killer postcard, Tony! Lookit all them box seat swells in their straw boaters and Arrow collars getting to hang with Buck. A ripping day at the ballpark in 1913.

Stellar piece! Has Father Mulcahy placed his wager? Buck's white (light tan) glove is terrific.

Hi everyone. New to the site. My name is Ed Gallagher. I saw this was where people were posting the Blacksox cards.

I just picked this up a week or so ago. I'm really not sure what it's worth but that's not why I got it. I just like the vintage stuff. I think it's a 1917 ? But that wouldn't make sense because the back says he has played from 1905-1920 so I don't really know. Anyway here's the card. Enjoy.

Guess I should add these photos I picked up from Goodwin's recent auction to this amazing array of Black Sox items posted so far. Hopefully they are worthy of inclusion. (The less said about the PSA pseudo-slabs the better).

Goodwin had around eight of these Black Sox photos in his auction - all beauties - and I would have tried to win 'em all if I could but you can't have everything. I am glad to have any image of the elusive McMullin but Felsch was the one I was ready to go for with a broken beer bottle in my hand. Crisp image of an old-time ballplayer from his spikes to his jaunty cap, a game face and a game belt buckle. And, Steve, God bless your sharp eye, that indeed does look like it may be Joe Jackson in the dugout (sitting right next to Ryan Christoff) - that don't hurt one bit - although I propose that we not start a six hundred post thread to debate it.;)

In 1927 Hap Felsch became the player-manager for the Regina, Saskatchewan independent semi-pro baseball team, which took the opportunity to re-dub itself "Hap Felsch's Regina Balmorals" in its advertising.

According to published reports, Felsch played first base, third base and even pitched in the team’s games against other independent teams in cities and towns in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and in the U.S. in North Dakota.

This telegram (above) was sent by Felsch on July 16, 1927 to someone named Johnnie Meyers, with Hap coming to terms with Meyers to have Meyers join the team in Moose Jaw (a city 45 miles west of Regina) to play for the same salary as another player, named in the missive as “Wayne.”

A photo was later affixed to the bottom of this telegram, showing Felsch (at right) sitting alongside another Balmoral player on the team’s bench. Both are in full uniform and both are smoking cigarettes.

Is the player at left the Johnnie Meyers named in the telegram?

Resurrecting this thread from earlier in the year with a pickup of of a Joe Jackson (Katie Jackson) signature. The closest I'm ever going to get to a real Jackson, and since his wife signed the majority of his stuff anyway, I felt it would be a good representation along with my other Blacksox/Cleansox items.

My new Joe Jackson decal bat. A big one too...35 inches. Looks like the label is about 60% intact.

Just picked up a Joe Benz which at one time was pasted in to a scrapbook.

That's a nice looking Benz and no doubt that is authentic.
Did you know that Joe Benz threw a no-hitter in 1914?
I'm thinking that that was signed in the late 1940's or early 1950's. Do you have any clue when it was signed based on other items in the scrapbook?

Benz ended up becoming a cemetery caretaker in his later years. Oddly, his teammates tended to keep track of him. I've seen a few handwritten responses from players to pioneering collectors who inquired about Benz' whereabouts (among other players). Invariably, the player would respond with "Works at cemetery, Chicago, Ill.". Might Benz have possessed more prowess than his stats would indicate, or did the Sporting News just run a "Where Are They Now?" column on him one too many times?

Of course everyone knew where Joe Benz was...they were all dying to get in to his place of work! (rim shot)...thank you, I'll be here all week...try the fish!
Scott, no I didn't know that he threw a no hitter. I just looked it up and saw that it was actually the first White Sox no hitter that allowed a run (not sure how many in mlb where that has happend). Also realized that the 1919 team had 3 pitchers to either have thrown or that would throw a no hitter (Benz, Cicotte and Robertson and all three were caught by Ray Schalk)...pretty cool! Also, I did not actually see the scrapbook, just know that it was pasted into one, but your date range guess sounds about right based on strength of signature.

No-Hitters than at least 1 run was allowed

I believe that there have been 21 nine inning no-hitters pitched since 1893 (when the pitching mound moved to the 60' 6" modern standard) where at least one run was allowed.

Additionally, there have been 3 eight inning unofficial no-hitters thrown that allowed have allowed at least one run.

Black Sox fans that may not own a couple of the Eight Men Out signatures yet, Huggins and Scott will have Eddie Cicotte and Chick Candil signed 3x5's in next month's auction. I felt like they needed to be rewarded with free advertising after the swiftly pulled their ACE authenticated items!

Resurrecting this thread with a nice Complete Karl Wingler questionairre of Eddie Murphy from the 1919 team. Not sure how many more Sox autos I'll be picking up, but I do know there will be an Eddie Collins and Kenesaw Landis in my future :)

I'll keep it going with one from earlier this year but never added here - the 1916 squad, posing with a postal workers' convention on the field at Comiskey.

I'm waiting for someone to post that 1919 Senators program, featuring the Black Sox and Walter Johnson pitching - from last week's Legendary auction.

"Field Of Dreams" was on again last nite. Haven`t seen it for a while, hard to believe it`s 25 years old. Reminded me of playing catch with my father and of course the Great Joe Jackson. Bye the way, is "have a catch" instead of "play catch" a more common phrase in different parts of the country?

That photo is used for the cover of Luhr's book, The Great Baseball Mystery.

Thanks for that info. My copy has stamps and slugs all over the back. The earliest stamp is 'OCT 6 1919', but there are also two from 1994 and one from 1988. It was well-used by publications.

I've been watching for 15 years now. I've seen 3 of these, one being this one, the other 2: one in a Chicago Restaurant about 6 years ago I was in and made an offer to the owner who declined. Saw another one after the fact at auction that went for a $1000 unframed (however in better condition then the one I just picked up). Mine came very nicely pre-framed. Just THEE Best Headline/Paper I've ever seen, finally snagged one.
