This trade card advertises the theatrical run of the Baer-Carnera bout. It was sold as from Brazil but the back is in Spanish and some of it is Castillan spelling so it looks to me like it is actually from Spain

Nicest Donovan 'Yellow Smear' I've seen so I picked one up. Used to see this fairly often, but then haven't seen a new one for three years now, everything seems to pop up in cycles. American Lithography really struggled to produce the Donovan To-Day card. Pulled from Silver, card redesigned, redesign messed up with a major and blatant recurring defect for some time, and finally a correct and fully produced card. About to be liberated from his tomb

Billiken Cigarros Jack Dempsey premium. The only one of these I've ever seen. Probably paid too much for it, but WTF, I had a good week.

I figured this was in the 6-7 range when I sent it to SGC a few weeks ago, but it's one of the few cards I still have that survived my childhood! As a survivor it was deserving of some "Tuxedo Time"!

Was happy too see this one pop up on eBay, I'm not a huge fan of the 50 parallels of every card but I think the actual printing plates idea is pretty cool for the old-timers I like to collect. Very tough to find, obviously, for any specific card. I have 3 of the 4 printing plates for Sullivan's UD Goodwin card, only this one now for the Allen & Ginter JL.

Won this a couple days ago, with a bid I thought was a lowball. Not sure if I'll keep it because it's a cool set and card, or trade bait box it because I like complete sets and this one is not really going to happen. Won a few things lately at bids I thought had no chance, hopefully the market is softening a little and I haven't just gotten lucky

I think the market is softening on a lot of stuff........or at the very least, it's very erratic, and fluctuations can vary wildly.

Also, with the new category changes and fracked up search engine, you're more likely to get bargains from smaller sellers, then you are from the giant consignment sellers who have already captured their market. Category changes and reliable search engines don't mean quite as much to them, as to the smaller seller who has a harder time being found on the platform.

IMO the category change has done major damage to the less popular categories. The boxing category is a mess. All of the unopened "box" stuff gets dragged into it and even when you refine for sport "boxing" a ton of extraneous crap still shows up. My sales last week were abysmal after weeks of strong sales and the only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that the items that sold before were discovered and tracked before the category shuffling. I fear it will take months for this to be sorted out. Until it is I think I will just confine myself to fixed price listings, some with best offers.

When you list, you have to find a way to fit the word "boxing" in the title. I've always done that, but it's even more important now.

.......and, when you search, you have to search the word "Boxing", and put it in quotes......otherwise anything that's a spin-off of the word "box", will pop up.

Sad thing is............you won't pick up anything boxing related, where the seller originally put it in a formerly existing boxing category, but neglected to put the word "boxing" in the item title.

In other words............Ebay F*&k3ed it all up.

I’m hoping the market is softening and isn’t my confirmation bias because I want that to happen. I’m kicking myself for forgetting to bid on the T219 Johnson that went cheap the day before.

I don’t want to dump on eBay because without them, I wouldn’t have half as many cards as I do, but boy was this change poorly thought out. It takes forever to search for what I want nowadays. I’ve found “boxing -box” works too to weed out some of the crap. It’s extra bad for us boxing dorks because at least half of the sellers have no clue what their cards even are to name them properly. Wish there was another platform, the BST here is great for baseball pickups but I’ve only done like 3 boxing deals here posting my want lists.

Unlike what eBay did, it makes sense, Dave. I am going to have to go in and amend all my listings to add the magic word...

Not usually my kind of card, I don't like the concept of these single card releases very much, but I absolutely love the old Pro Set football cards because.... I have no idea. So this one was a cool addition to my growing box of "random boxing cards that don't fit in sets". Seller forgot to list this copy with a stock emoji and "RC, HOT" tag.

The prettiest boxing cards in my book. This has 2 pinholes but is an upgrade, my old Papke didn't have any of it's 4 borders. This as far along upgrading condition as I ever get.

Before entering films, William Thomas "Kid" Broad had been a professional boxer in the featherweight and lightweight classes, and had over 100 bouts in his career. Only twice did he suffer a knockout. Born in England in 1878, he began fighting in Cleveland in the late 1890s, and his career took off. His greatest ring triumph occurred in 1901, when he knocked out Young Corbett just two months before Corbett went on to win the featherweight title. Supposedly, at one of his bouts, the Kid was discovered by Douglas Fairbanks and approached about being in movies. He spent about a decade in the ring, and began appearing as an extra in films, and assisting with fight scenes. In 1916, he, along with several ex-boxers, appeared in the Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle short Bright Lights (1916). In one scene, he and his friends were supposed to be beaten up by a group of sailors. Instead, the boxers kept beating up the sailors, take after take. Arbuckle finally decided that the fight looked better that way. Douglas Fairbanks once called the Kid, asking him to play a tough guy part. The Kid thought someone larger would be better in the role, so he recommended wrestler Bull Montana, giving the grappler his start in pictures. In another version of the story, Fairbanks thought the Kid wasn't ugly enough for the part, and asked him to find someone uglier. It is not known exactly how many movies Kid Broad made, but by the time he appeared in Wanted: A Husband (1919) in 1919, some newspapers reported that he already had 89 films to his credit. Although virtually nothing is known about his wife, The Moving Picture World reported in 1920 that both the Kid and Mrs. "Kid" Broad were appearing in Frontier of the Stars (1921), and this was her film debut. In the early 1930s, the Kid worked as a banker's bodyguard on Wall Street. Kid Broad spent his last years in New York City, living on the west side. He would carry a picture of himself as a young boxer wearing green tights. He kept another picture in his hotel room; that of a young woman in a dance costume. The Kid claimed she was his wife, who had died decades earlier. His neighbors felt sorry for him and would give him some money for rent and food. Kid Broad's brother John offered him a home in Cleveland, but the Kid replied that he would rather die around a New York lamppost than in an Ohio cow pasture. In June of 1947, the Kid got his wish. A patrolman found a dead body in a doorway on the lower west side of the city. The victim's beard and unkempt hair initially made his identification difficult, but the cauliflower ears stood out. Several of his old-time friends identified the dead man as the Kid. Death had been caused by hardening of the arteries. When the funeral was held, only six people showed up. The Kid was not even shaved for his services, because his brother John felt that the boxer should go out as he had lived the last few years.

Adam, the 1952 Cicogna Marciano appears to be hand-cut and pretty small. I'm not familiar with this issue, is it cut from a magazine?

Adam might know more than I do, but I believe it is 1955 Nannina (Italy), not hand-cut. I think one of the grading companies has it wrong.

Well, someone must be wrong. Here's another graded example that says it's 1952. I guess we have dueling grading companies. :D

I'm near certain that the SGC slab is wrong.

It is the only example from the set they have graded. Most likely they misidentified, or trusted a submitter's info into giving it the label for the card.

Italian sellers state it is 1955 Naninna, as does Beckett.

That reminds me, I recently came across this amazing Macho Man Slim Jim holder at a local shop. Not that I really have anywhere to put something like this, but I asked the guy if he'd consider selling it, but he said no. It's a really cool piece.

This RPPC looks like Joe Louis, Willie Pep, Mike Jacobs and some others gathered in Jacobs' office for some sort of signing. Since Jacobs looked pretty lively but dropped dead in 1953, I am guessing this is pre-1953.

Seeing a Jeffries trend. If one values boxers based on their resume and career achievements, Jeffries is a huge steal in pre-war boxing. Nice picks

Totally agree. Jeffries is one of my personal favorites since his former ranch and boxing venue is a long stone's throw from my office. I have a variety of JJJ memorabilia including a flag and a ribbon from a wreath from his funeral. Probably gotta do a shadow box of stuff some day.

If Jack Johnson is Babe Ruth, James Jeffries gotta at least be Jimmy Foxx. :D
