Ferguson Bakery Premium (Jumbo) Pennants

1 Attachment(s)
Just inquiring to see if anyone has a complete list of the Premium (Jumbo sized) Pennants issued by Ferguson Bakery. I know they are quite rare and desirable.

Here are the 7 of which I am aware (and have seen examples...)

Alexander
McGraw
Huggins
Collins
Tinker
Schulte
Barry

You'd certainly think that they also produced Cobb, Wagner, LaJoie, Matty, Evers, Chance and other big stars of the day. Are they so rare that you just never see them? Or do these simply not exist? I can't imagine what a Jumbo Cobb or Wagner would actually sell for.

Below is a pic of the Alexander Pennant, just for reference...

Any help/additional insight is much appreciated. Thanks!

There is also a Cobb and Bill Donovan.

Over the past 15-20 years, I have heard of one Cobb, two or perhaps three of McGraw, two Tinker, one Schulte, two Huggins...but these are basically one of a kind items. Since you had to send in 50 Ferguson coupons for a large pennant or pillow top, I'm sure very few have survived. Of course, there are probably some buried out there. The checklist has grown in recent years, so there certainly could be other undiscovered ones.

I have pictures of the Huggins, Collins, Tinker, Schulte and Alexander. Can anybody post pictures of any others. I need them for the new pennant guide that I am working on. Thanks, Mike

I don't have a list but I think I am going to steal that top image for my site since the one I am using isn't as good. :)

I have seen one other of these Pillowtops with baseball players and it had Heinie instead of Honus, the rest of the players are the same. One of my fave pieces I picked up last year. And of course I got my information from guys on this board to start with, for the most part.

The only one of the nine known pennants of which I have never seen a picture is the Cobb. One sold in the 1999 Halper auction with a McGraw. The total selling price was around 3500 dollars. Probably one of the few bargains in that auction. Unfortunately the Halper catalog did not have a picture of the Cobb. Below are the seven that I have accumulated over the last ten years.

Those are sweet. Incredible pillow case Leon.
So is the known checklist for the large ones
1-Huggins
2-Collins
3-Tinker
4-Schulte
5-Alexander
6-McGraw
7-Berry
8-Donovan
9-Cobb ??

other known ones ? Thanks, Mike

IMO one of the most beautiful items in the hobby along with the Fans for a Fan.
Great pennants guys!

Here is the Cobb premium. These were posted here in a Georgia Peach thread from 2009.

Very nice Cobb!

Leon, I'd love one of those someday! Great piece!

These are incredible. It's funny how you can catalog close to the entire population of such a rare group just from this board. Very nice gentleman.

lefty147 01-30-2013 09:29 AM

Thanks for posted the Cobb Adam. Mike

Of course I am biased but this board is freaking unbelievable sometimes. Absolutely unbelievable. Thanks for posting these pennants guys!!

And here is a blotter card I hope to acquire one day....I think one of our board members (in this thread?) owns it...

I'm guilty Leon. There they are all together , the blotter, the seven premiums and a full set of BF2s. I have posted this picture before but I love to show them off.

STUNNING!
WOW!
Very nice, I'd spend a lot of time in there!

Nashvol 01-30-2013 07:43 PM

Awesome display!

yanksfan09 01-30-2013 07:57 PM

Great Room there, I too am looking for one of those ad cards.

perezfan 01-30-2013 09:36 PM

Mouth-watering does not even begin to describe that room!

I love the symmetry of all the geometric shapes... beautifully rendered. Not to mention the stunning content within all those 100 year old rectangle, diamond and triangle shapes!

spec 01-30-2013 11:38 PM

Ferguson, or not?

Leon,
Thanks for posting the Ferguson Bakery advertising blotter. It illustrates a conundrum that has long plagued this longtime collector of the D381 set. To wit: The pennants on the pillow top as well as the large premium pennant of Evers do not match the BF2s commonly labeled Ferguson issues nor the large pennants displayed in this thread. The format is similar, but the design is different and the photos are all portraits rather than the full action shots adorning BF2s and oversize pennants. In fact, the photos on this blotter (and the actual pillow tops) match those used in the D381 sets produced by Ferguson (and the Fleischmann Bakery of NYC), rather than the BF2 images, which emanate from the M101-4 and 5 sets we now know were a product of the Mendelsohn Co. of Chicago.
It seems unlikely Ferguson would have purchased Mendelsohn photos for this promotion when it already had the Underwood & Underwood pictures it used in D381. In addition, BF2s are not found predominantly in the Boston area as one might expect if issued by a Boston bakery. In fact, they turn up throughout the country, which seems strange since Ferguson did not distribute nationally (I believe Ferguson was purchased around this time by the Ward Co. of NY, which did have a larger footprint, however). Of course, someone may have found a direct connection between Ferguson and the BF2s and large pennants, but this advertising blotter is not the missing link.
Bob Richardson, who also is in the market for a Ferguson blotter, though I do have a similar version advertising the Fleischmann set.

Actually, the Evers pennant on the blotter is a pennant from the pillow top. The photos on the large pennants are action photos and are the same that were used on the regular BF2s. Hope this helps a little.

All of this and we still don't have definitive proof that the BF2s are actually "Ferguson" (that I am aware of). Thanks for posting, everyone. This is what our community is best for

Spec- funny story- when I was bidding on the Pillow Top I had to call Legendary Auctions, to correct them, as they had it listed as BF2 pennants on it. I never quite got them to put up all of the correct info. But in the end I am not sure it changed the bidding. I was very happy to get it as my winning bid was the last one I was doing and I knew I probably wouldn't have a chance at another.

Cobb

Hmmmm I see the Cobb is a purple. Mine is pink.... had it for over 40 years. Picture is the same. So does that make 2 known?

Hankphenom 03-26-2023 08:25 AM

I remember that Leland's had a nice version of the pillowtop for sale at a National some 15 years ago for close to 5K, and no doubt would have knocked a little off for a serious buyer. I thought about it, and now, of course...

nolemmings 03-26-2023 10:28 PM

Those pennants are gorgeous. Curiously, the Cobb and Schulte photos do not match their Mendelsohn m101-4 shots or BF2 pennants. Still, the pennants almost certainly were not put out by Ferguson's Bakery.

mrreality68 03-28-2023 03:21 PM

Love these pennants and would love to eventually get a Cobb and a Jackson. Hard to get and prices of jumped dramatically especially on the Jackson for the few that have come up for auction
