Card Grading Companies

Posted By: Tim Dudley
While looking at baseball cards up for auction on eBay, I have seen that there are several different baseball/football/etc. card grading companies out there. I am curious to know which is the most respected as being the "real" authority on card quality which in turns relates to its value.

I have seen a PSA 9 card value to be very high and then the same card with a SGC grade or Gem grade of 10 be valued by bidders as less in value. That makes me suspicious. If I see an SGI graded card or GAI graded card with a mint 10 rating is that the same as a PSA 9 or 10?

I would like to know if I purchase a SGC 9 rated card and sent it to PSA for a "crossover" grade, should I assume that it will be a PSA 9 as well?

So far here are the companies I have noticed on graded cards :
PSA, SGC, GEM, GAI, PRO, SGI, GEM Elite

Are there any others?

Thanks - Tim

Card Grading Companies

I probably wouldn't even consider one from another company unless I thought I could cross it over to a PSA or SGC.

SGC may not get the same respect that PSA gets from modern collectors but it has a huge following in the prewar section and is on par with PSA if not slightly ahead.
