Mel Ott Signature Opinions

1 Attachment(s)
Hello all. Can I get some opinions on this Mel Ott autograph? It is in a 1928 Chicago Cubs scorecard. I don't know for sure but being signed in pencil and looking as old as the scorecard, I lean towards real (who would fake a sig and do such a poor job of making it legible?).
Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

I would lean authentic but it is not a slam dunk. He did not sign "Melvin" all that often except on personal checks so exemplars are not that plentiful for comparison purposes from my standpoint.

Actually, early in his career, you will see the full name a lot more. There just aren't as many of them around as with later examples.

I saw the scan before reading the post and said to myself, "I bet that's from about 1927". A year off.

Any opinions on what it would sell for (reasonably)?

$300 is reasonable. $400 is fair. $500-600 is full retail.

I've owned a few early ones signed this way; nobody cared enough to get excited.

After he passed away, his widow used to send out cuts which she removed from checks. As the other poster mentioned, he signed these "Melvin Ott" as well. The funny part was that Mrs. Ott would cut out the "vin" and mount the "Mel" and the "Ott" side by side! Where did all the vins go? I can't wait for their eventual rediscovery, only to end up in ridiculous insert cards.

I’ll dissent on this one. I respect your guys’ opinions, but the M looks terrible and the flow of Melvin would steer me away. I’m willing to be wrong because most of the Ott signatures I have had are from later in his career. Also, it’s signed over the creases which always make me very hesitant because most items were signed day of the game and not after it has been creased multiple times.

You have to love the notes of original collectors which were written when this material had no monetary value. A lot of the time, I'd say it adds to the aesthetic, as it speaks to simpler times.

This autograph hound revisited their autograph book several years later and provided updates!

Jodi,
So with this full name example it shows the more classic M with a tighter first name with good flow that I am referencing. I’m not familiar with his early signature, but it just seems off to me and labored. Any comparison info you can share? Thanks
