November pick-ups
 

I started November with a bang and got three things off eBay yesterday see below.
First mention, I got this die cut 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" "trade card scrap" of a pudgy baseball catcher.

He's wearing a catchers mask so we know it's from after catchers masks caught on, after 1877. His belt has the words "Gargling Oil Liniment' on it and the discription says there's something info on the back about "Wanzer".....I hardly know anythig about cards and trade cards but am I rich now? I'd consider trading it for a late model Porsche or Ferrari

Then I got this wire photo of Ronald Reagan posing for a football statue...I had to get it because of the sports sculpture tie in. FOr those of you too young to remeber Reagan was our 40th president

Vintage original 1951 players patch that only the American League players wore due to the AL's Golden Anniversary (first one that I have come across).

catchers mitt
 

i have to agree with the glove forum that the reach catchers glove is a kids model.

I don't know myself. Emails and posts from experienced collectors are running about 50/50 - adult versus youth. Nice 100 year old item regardless.

My feeling is that the mitt is somewhere in between. It's too big for a true kid's size and smaller than the large adult size. Junior or amateur size would probably be the most appropriate designation, something most likely for use by high school players. It's an interesting mix of features versus cost saving construction. Great looking mitt.

I just picked up this awesome signed ball for a very good price here. My friend and I figure its at a dinner/banquet or something in early 60s, as two of the names on here had passed by 65, and a couple guys went into HOF in 1962. Any ideas on that theory appreciated.

Nice mix of HOF'ers, future HOFers and regular guys, w some tougher sigs. Pics are a bit blurred, but here ya go. Most signatures VERY strong.

One more picture of ball. Again, ball is MUCH nice in person too..:)

Weekend Haul
 

I don't chime in very often but I keep up with the forum regularly. I wanted to share the haul I brought in this past weekend. A good friend of mine passed away a few weeks ago and his wife asked me to take his collection. Although there weren't many eccentric and rare items, I'll probably never have a better day from a collecting standpoint than I did on Saturday. Most things are pre 1930 with 15 ca 1910 catchers masks, many gloves including a nice Reach Duck Web, uniforms, many, many team photos, rain cap helmet, much golf and tennis along with the baseball, basketball, and football items I'll show you here. Dan, note the framed Nebraska Indians basketball broadside! Enjoy the pics.

I know this is a baseball thread but I thought you might enjoy the scope of the whole thing. A question, the uniform with the blue A on the breast is a Spalding and has professional looking sewn names in pants and collar. Any idea what team may be? I assume it's minor league 1930s-40s.

Bert, nice haul, but your post makes me a bit sad because I think I knew your friend. A lot of that stuff I recognize from the antique malls on I-80 in Ashland and Omaha. I can't remember the fellows name, but I bought stuff from him and talked to him on the phone a few times and also chatted with him when he used to set up at the Lincoln antique shows. I hadn't been to the Ashland mall in a few months and when I went in there a few weeks ago I noticed all of his stuff was gone. I had my eye on the Nebraska Indians broadside, but he always wanted too much for it....That Duckweb glove he had something like $2,000 on it...not sure what it's actually worth, but it must be pretty rare. The last item I bought from him was a nifty O'Neill, NE cabinet photo.

Don Girard was his name...a very good guy and he was set up at those places. Lived in North Platte for years but health forced him to Omaha. His wife really wanted the stuff out of the house and essentially didn't want anything for it. All of the stuff had price tags on it with much of it priced high. I'm thankful to have it all and will disperse of much of it when I get time. Dan, feel free to email an offer on the NI broadside. I'm going to take it out of the frame and take a closer look at it.

Just got this game in the other day. Its the first I've ever seen of it. Its called "Ideal Baseball Game" and was made by Carrom-Archarena. The seller said it dated to 1910 but I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion. Anyone have information about it?

Dr. Cooper lists an 'Ideal Baseball Game, 1903, Fiber board, wood, and net pockets. Karrom-Archarena, Ludington, Michagan, 29" x 29" " on page 124 of his book. The games are different....perhaps yours is from a later year?

I'm soo excited about this new pennant. I've only seen one other. That Bill Heagy, sure comes up with some nice pieces...eh Bill?

I knew I had seen one of these somewhere before Mark and your post jogged my memory. I now remember seeing the one on Bob McCann's website. I recall that he wanted mucho dinero for it. Trust me when I say I paid significantly less ;)

1939 All Star Game at Yankee Stadium...
 

This game was played exactly one week after Gehrig's "Luckiest Man" speech of July 4th, 1939.

The All-Star Game came to the House that Ruth Built for 1939 and honorary captain Lou Gehrig watched the AL win a tightly contested 3-1 game behind a Joe DiMaggio homer.

Twenty-year-old Bob Feller, the Tribe's rookie fireballer, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam and hurled 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball to close out the AL's win.

Brock, great pick-up on the Carrom <I>Ideal Baseball Game</I>. The date you were provided is reasonably accurate (could even be a few years older), as substantiated by period advertising and a very nice history page at the company's own website, here:

Did the instructions and/or any of the playing pieces survive along with the board? Those are the <I>really</I> tough bits...

Chris, indispensible as Mark's book is for game collectors, it could have used a bit more scrutiny in editing... we'll certainly cut him some slack, though, considering there were almost no other sources of information available out there when the book was written. In any case, the game shown in his book is not <I>Ideal</I>, but one of several later Carrom models, identical to one another on the baseball side of the board but distinguished from one another by the game or design on the reverse side. Most likely it's the late 1930s "LFK" model.

Picked up this big 18" plaster Babe Ruth statue

Not a new pickup but finally got around to having this 1919 Cinci. Reds piece framed. I'm real happy with how it turned out.

Brock, that black Ruth statue is a fabulous pickup. Those are very prone to damage, and are near impossible to find (let alone in nice condition as yours appears to be!) I saw one of these at the National (with a chipped bill) about 3 years ago, priced at $1,800. Granted, that one was overpriced, but it's a rare and valuable statue of the Bambino. Congrats!

I'm very excited about the Tigers figural I just added to my collection. I thought it was chalkware, but it is in fact ceramic and extremely well made. These are very tough to find, so I feel fortunate to have acquired one. It is 8 1/2 inches tall.
