It was a very bad 1951 baseball film. Then again is there such a thing as a good 1950s baseball film? The link below has information on the film.

Most of the Four Color comics from that era are beat to heck, because the kids actually read them :)

Incidentally, besides the #423 you have, Rhubarb was in issues #466 and #563 as well (minus the baseball theme, so strictly for fans of affluent felines).

Thank you. Yeah.. that chubby little dude rules. It looks like a scene from the little rascals or bad news bears. I just love how all the kids are different and pretty much frame Ruth. Early images of Ruth with groups of kids are tough. You mostly see him while he is retired.. not in uniform. This one is in his prime with a giants jersey cuz players were unable to wear their own on the off season. I guess there are ways around that.. just throw on another jersey..haha..silliness. I just love that these kids are from a orphanage like Ruth and all of different ages/sizes…very happy to own it!

prewarsports 03-04-2013 03:12 PM

Ben

Any chance the fat kid is "Fatty Joe Cobb" of the early Little Rascals? It would fit the time frame and the Los Angeles location of the photo too I think. It looks a LOT like him but just a guess.

Rhys

Man, how could you not love the Babe. He always put the kids first. Wish he didn't have to go through what he did as a child in an orphanage, but seems like it had a hugely positive impact on his life.

Rhys,

I don't think it is him as it is not mentioned in the slug or any other place this image is online

I think it is just another chubby feller. But I am no ear, nose and ect specialist so I could be wrong.

Couple of nice ol' pics:

1) Feb 1912 outside the left field wall of the old Huntington Ave. Grounds - Fenway would open two months later

2) 1908 Harvard basketball team - any basketball memorabilia from this era is so hard to find!

Very cool Dodgers piece Scott -- also love the horse and buggy outside left field from the other Scott!

I love the Horse and Buggy outside the Huntington Avenue Grounds too. Simply a wonderful image.

Runscott 03-08-2013 09:47 AM

In keeping with March's pick-up theme, here is a postcard I received the other day (it's been trimmed down a little), of a 'bus' being used to transport a ball-team. Joe Wood describes such transportation in 'The Glory of Their Times'.

Also, a postcard showing buggies lined up along the 3rd-base line

sayhey24 03-08-2013 10:40 AM

Great stuff -- apparently you have to be named Scott to add to your collection this month!

I like the '41 team photo - I've had this ball signed by the '41 Dodgers for a while and it sure would display nicely with a photo like that!

Christmas card from a supportive fan addressed to Tris Speaker concerning a Sept. 25, 1919 game fixing scandal. This accusation was made against him (and Ty Cobb) by major league pitcher Dutch Leonard in 1926.

I've been watching this 1909 KEIO postcard for a while - finally pulled the trigger.

And below KEIO's rival, Waseda, from their 1911 U.S. tour.

Carlton, you'll be able to find more about both teams, "soon", on the research page of my web-site. I've been very frustrated with how slow it takes to get articles published, and will be creating a venue for other baseball historians to web-publish their articles. It will be professional, etc., and I already have 4-5 articles ready to go up.

I'll start a thread when it's ready to accommodate articles by you all.

GrayGhost 03-15-2013 12:26 PM

I'll be bookmarking that site. LOVE IT

Runscott 03-15-2013 12:51 PM

Thanks Scott. The three featured 1911 teams were the subject of an article I wrote back about that time, and the stats you see were gathered to support the article. I'll probably expand it to include a few more Chicago and Kansas City teams, and begin working backward toward 1900.

Just an FYI that I started this thread on the other side. It would be cool to ID the two players. I have never seen a Buffalo program before.

Picked up a few RPPC's and a couple of early stadium PC's the past couple of days. The teams I can identify from the PPPC's are: Northwest Missouri Normal College in Marysville, MO; Ft Worth Pirates?; Staplehurst, NE. Others I don't know.

Here are three more. The Marty O'Toole is a Max Stein, I believe. The New York field is pre-Yankee Stadium, but not sure what park? The other, of course is Wrigley Field.
