I love that card, but having grown up in St Louis and seeing Gibson in the 64, 67, and 68 WS, I have often thought that whoever picked pink did not have the slightest idea of what they were dealing with

Al,
I grew up in SE Mo and I'm with you there. Attended a '67 WS game and then not another until the Braves clincher in 1995. Gibby was one of a kind. I was born in 1959 and so I got real spoiled by the '60s Cards, I thought my team was an automatic in the Series. Made the 70s very hard to endure.

I never understood why they would use pink for a background color. I'm not a fan of the olive green backgrounds used on some of the 1954 Topps either. Maybe we need a poll for worst background color on a set...

totally agree with you on the pink color for the 59s...but I would argue the reverse and say that the pink background T206s are rather austere looking...not sure if that is the right word, but they seem uniquely cool...

I'd probably just have to start a thread on ugliest background colors and/or card designs. I was going to start a poll, but I couldn't think of a real good way to set it up since there are so many colors and I think the design of the card has almost as much influence.

When you see something like those buried in a box of ephemera at an auction you don't pass them up. :) I was just lucky that nobody else there knew their value.

For those that don't know, that is a paraphrase of Joe's final words every night after calling the Reds game.
I really miss hearing Joe on the radio, he was on when I first started listening regularly in '67, would love for him to get inducted into Cooperstown's broadcaster section. I have his '67 card somewhere I need to get scanned and posted in my Photobucket.

My scanner is giving me fits (thanks HP!) but I managed to finish off my 1965 Topps Transfer insert set at the National. That one took a while but I found Kaline and Brooks Robby at two different tables. Needs a few upgrades but it's done.

Post war wise I also picked some some upgrades to my Brooklyn Dodgers and Mets team sets and a 50 Bowman Jackie, started a Salada Coins Mets team set and nailed a lot of Topps and OPC hockey type cards (I know, I know; no hockey here!).

Dan,
It was a BIN on ebay in the last couple of weeks. If he ever tells me he wants to move I'll send a note your way first.

$15 for the pair. For some reason they were mixed into a lot of military photos which I didn't want and for which I had a feeling would go for more than the baseball cards so I asked the auctioneer to pull out the cards and sell them separately.

The military photos lot sold for $75...I made a good call. :D

That's about right for those two cards I think. I am collecting the Montreal subset (dodgers farm team) and have to say while I generally am not a fan of B&W cards, I do like the look of the Parkies. They are not that easy to find in the States but some are out there.

Well, I actually paid $20 for the Frostade pair, but I was referencing the 1960 Post Kaline and Drysdale box back cards that are also pictured above. The Frostade cards I got from the friend of a board member.

Unfortunately, that's a touched up version of the scan from the eBay auction and it's a prime example of what happens when you buy a card based on a scan 1/3 the size of the actual card and no description beyond "1956 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 3 VG". If you look carefully at my touched up version of the scan there's about a 1 1/2 inch crease that runs from the edge of the card, past his ear and stops under his eyes. There's also a smaller crease in the bottom right that shows up more on the back than the front, but of course there wasn't even a back scan in the auction. All in all it's still a nice looking card for the grade, but I had no idea there were any creases until I had it in hand.

Doug 08-26-2010 01:37 PM

I guess I should probably qualify my comment. The card is actually very nice. You can hold it a foot away from your face and you would swear it should be a PSA 5. I don't really have an issue with the lack of a description if there are big and clear enough scans that I can see the card for myself. I guess what irritates me is when someone lists a card with a scan that small where the crease/wrinkle isn't visible and they don't bother to mention it in the description.

I hear ya Doug. I wish sellers were more descriptive as well, especially with lower grade cards.

Doug 08-26-2010 04:05 PM

I don't want to go on a rant here, but I don't see why sellers can't scan the backs of cards either. It can't be that hard to flip the card over while it's already in the scanner and scan it again. Maybe I can get Dennis Miller to help out on this one: :D
