1888 Scrapps Tobacco

I was just perusing REA's newly-opened auction, and noticed that they are attributing the 1888 Scrapps Tobacco set, to "H.D. Smith and Company", a candy and gum manufacturer in Cincinnati, Ohio.

According to REA, this was recently discovered by Al C. of LOTG, who did some extensive newspaper archive research to find it. It also states that the "cards" were evidently issued as "premiums".

Have any articles been published or announcements made, that include any further information about this?

The above information is buried in a lot description in REA's auction.

In any case, thank you to Al for his work in discovering this!

It's great to know that baseball card history is still being discovered.

Cool cards these are I have always thought die cuts and the sort were under appreciated. Amazing to think these were made when they were and look as great as they do!

They must have been laid flat with a slab of gum, since they don't seem to be folded or creased. Here's another article I found on the net: https://dannwoellertthefoodetymologi...baseball-card/
