Please see link above to my latest story on a 1926 paperweight featuring a figural of Gar Wood’s Miss America V powerboat. The Miss America V won the Harmsworth trophy in 1926.

The feature covers many aspects of the paperweight including:
1. The life and times of the famous industrialist Gar Wood.
2. A timeline of the fateful 1926 Harmsworth race won by Miss America V.
3. A summary of Detroit industrial culture c1911
4. A summarized history of the Harmsworth race
5. Speculation scenarios of why there are only eight known examples of the paperweight.
6. A look at the 1926 cost to produce Miss America V, with an inflation conversion to what it would cost today.
7. The paperweights artistic importance and place among powerboat collectibles

As well the story features more than 40 photos.

Please enjoy…
Kindly -Carlton

So cool! Love your collecting niches outside the usual "major" sports. Do have any kind of fix on how many other collectors are going for boat, motorcycle, auto, etc., racing, and the other areas of collectibles you are constantly picking up neat pieces from?

CarltonHendricks 01-07-2023 04:26 PM

Good Question

Hey thanks Hank...fix on how many collectors in those areas?...well that's a good question...I'd say each area you mentioned "boat, motorcycle, auto, etc., racing" would vary from each other but motorsports in general seem pretty hot...at least the ancient stuff I like....I would say early motorcycle items from the teens seem to be leading the pack...which is probably due in part to the T.V. show American Pickers...Early Indian Motorcycle items especially because it's such an iconic brand...I'm talking trophies, programs, photos etc...

Pre-war boat stuff is what surprises me...the prices on boat signs is kind of shocking. Shocking because generally a market develops over time...How can it develop when there's nothing out there...As I alluded to in the Miss America paperweight article...I've hardly seen any great boat signs...yet when they come up blam...they go much higher than I expect...I would speculate it's because of the red hot sign market...that market is on fire...porcelain, tin, ...petro leading the way but other products are strong too...

Dear Friends…
Please know I have posted a new feature on my site SportsAntiques.com….The story is about a 1916 Harvard baseball schedule broadside poster which announces all the teams they would play for the season. The first pre-season game was against the Red Sox…Guess who was playing for the Red Sox in 1916…his initials were BR…Click the link above to learn the shocking truth…

Billy Ripken?

Welcome back, Carlton! I was just thinking about how we haven’t heard from your World lately.

Bill Rayburn 07-20-2023 09:09 PM

Carlton, as we discussed the 1916 Harvard broadside schedule is beyond cool. Your flushing out the details through your research makes it really special. I have to admit, I like the Hendee Indian drum as well.

Thanks Rob and Bill...
Here's that Hendee Drum...

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/WsXhjN.jpg

Sunday 7/2/23 I scored this very cool drum at the July Alameda Point Antiques Fair...not sure of much of anything about it for now...The dealer I got it from, who I see around at shows, is Native American and a teacher…she said she got it from friends near a pow-wow at the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation in Ledyard Connecticut…which is about 75 miles from Springfield Massachusetts where the Indian company was…only thing I know for sure is the patina looks old...like 1930ish...The original Indian motorcycles were made from 1901 to 1953 by the Hendee Manufacturing Company… the name was changed to the “Indian Motocycle Company” in 1923….I can’t find any other examples…which happens…Possibly on one hand, if Hendee Manufacturing Company issued the drum as an advertising piece before the name change the inscription might have been abbreviated to something like “Hendee Mfg. Co.”…not Hendee Indian Co…but that’s not written in stone…it could have been made after the name change and they were underlining the company history…especially considering the “1901” in the center…The Hendee company was very big on using Native American imagery and even adopted that nomenclature into their corporate culture…for example…company president George Hendee was called the Big Chief…co-founder and head designer Oscar Hedstrom was called the Medicine Man. The factory was called the Wigwam and the dealer network was called the Tribe. During the 1910s, Indian became the largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world…Another guess would be that an Indian Motorcycle dealership may have made it for their showroom…who knows…all I know for now is I’m confident it’s old and it looks killer in my collection….

I’m now looking for photos of anyplace Indian motorcycles were exhibited between 1901-1953…such as International Exhibitions like the Panama Pacific where Indian Motorcycles were featured…
