Unique Baseball Box Found At Estate Sale

Found this over the weekend at a local estate auction. Anyone have any info on it. It was too cool to pass up. Im uncertain of the value and the paper decal appears to have some type of horse on it. Its not as brittle as it appears in the picture. Thanks again!

Baseball box

Cool item. Must have been some kind of toys or something for that many balls to fit inside the box.....doesn’t look like it would hold that many regular sized baseballs! On closer inspection looks like it was some sort of a candy item. Very unique!

I can’t get over the dovetails on that box. Holy crap, they don’t make furniture that well, these days!

Necco candy shapes

Apparently "baseballs" was a shape of Necco candy before the hearts and wafers. This might be a box of the baseball-shaped candies??

Obviously didn't hold 120 actual baseballs :)

I believe the Necco baseballs were either gum or candy shaped like a baseball with sayings on them much like the sweethearts. All of the mom and pop stores in and around Boston carried most of their products. I remember seeing Skybars, Clark bars, Mary Janes, Banana Split candy and of course the teethwrecker Necco Wafers. The company had its headquarters on Mass Ave in Cambridge near MIT. Their smokestack was painted like a roll of Necco wafers. They also made mini baseball pennants with team names on them.

This was a rather interesting candy Necco sold. Apparently their candy came in a variety of shapes.

A small image, but here it isAttachment 456770

Their products are still featured in many movies. Those small hearts with sayings on them are a product of NECCO (New England Confectionary Company).

The location of the factory may explain why so many MIT students are crazy. They were on a constant sugar high as the factory was operating 24 hours a day and the fumes engulfed the campus. I am sure all of the wild stunts by the seniors every year can be traced back to that.

The NECO building in Revere Mass. Is now another Amazon warehouse. The original NECO factory building in Cambridge Mass is a pharmaceutical manufacturer Novartis

My Grandfather told me this candy came in a variety of sizes. The minis were called "mosquito bites" and they went up in size from there...Fried Eggs, Cupcakes, Cans, Party Hats, Torpedos, Jugs, Melons, Gazongas and last but not least Jawbreakers.
