Posted By: john/z28jd
18 baseball players were named after George Washington but none have played since 1956....is he starting to lose his luster?

8 players are named after Thomas Jefferson and just 3 after Abraham Lincoln...none after William Taft but 2 got stuck with the worst president ever,Franklin Pierce. Amazingly only one player got stuck with the name "John Quincy Adams" but that was by choice. Charles E Strick changed his name on his own to John Quincy Adams Strick....very odd since there is no way he knew him personally and he wasnt alive while JQ was pres. Maybe he changed it to try and break his career long slump as a .164 hitter.

On a side note, I have planned for many years now to name my first born "Ulysses S Grant Hurricane" whether it was a boy or a girl but only recently have i stopped using that as my opening pickup line

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
1st, the S did stand for something. It stood for Simpson, which was his mother's maiden name.

2nd, he was born Hiram Ulysses Grant, and went by "Lyss".

3rd, when nominated to attend West Point, the Congressman who nominated him sent it in as 'Ulysses S. Grant', thinking that was his name. The Congressman knew that his mom's maiden name was Simpson.

4th, Grant tried to register as Ulysses H. Grant, but the school wouldn't allow him in if the appointment didn't match.

5th, so Grant adopted 'Ulysses S. Grant' to get into West Point.

6th, Groucho used to ask folks who was buried in Grant's Tomb. Grant wasn't and isn't. Grant died in 1885, the Tomb was built after he died, but while his wife was still alive. US Grant was entombed there 10 or more years after he died. His wife is there. I think there are some befriended or adopted children there, too.

So who said, "Knowing a lot about baseball is like knowing a lot about whittling." ???

But why quibble over facts?

By the way, as a lifelong Democrat who has never voted Republican in his life (wow, does that mean I might be slightly more objective than, say, the average angry liberal?) Don't know where you got that "angry liberal" ****.

And Karl Rove didn't chose Obama. the Democratic primary voters did.

Of course, it's totally irrelevant what either Obama's or Palin's "spiritual advisor" believes.

But, Rev. Wright does have a valid reason or two to be pretty pissed at this country. I doubt Palin's pastor's reasons for believing that we're near the "end of times," or that speaking in tongues is a manifestation of being infused with the holy spirit, or that men and dinosaurs lived happily together, or... any number of other crackpot beliefs are as well-justified.

TRIVIA.....Will history be repeated ? ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
As I said, we live in a "1/3rd Nation" (ideologically speaking).

It's always been like this dating back to the American Revolution. When only 1/3rd of the population supported George Washington.
One-third favored the British rule....and, 1/3rd did not give a crap.

America is great not only because of its ethnic diversity, but because most of us get along really great, despite our ideological differ-
ences.

TED Z

Posted By: Bill Kasel
I'm gonna say you're all wrong and say the correct answer is Spiro Agnew.

No matter how you vote it speaks volumes that you have the following candidates to choose from:

1. an african america raised by a single mother
2. a man who lost EVERYTHING before he even started his first term in the Senate (my opinon of everything would be my kid(s) and wife)
3. a man who spent five tortuous years as a POW
4. a woman who came from nowhere to become a mayor, then governor and now potential VP.

God Bless America!

BTW, I spent Thursday night not watching the drivel that is political debating and name calling but watching 102 Minutes on the History Channel to remember exactly what happened seven years ago and that we should never forget. If anyone gets the chance to read the book 102 Minutes That Changed America I highly suggest it. NEVER FORGET.

Bill Kasel

Posted By: paulstratton
Yes, he did lose. If you add up the votes for Taft and TR they outnumber Wilson's however. That kind of party split probably wouldn't happen in today's world. I like TR's platform in 1912..."To destroy this invisible Government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day." Some things never change I guess...
