What is your collecting focus today?

Posted By: leon
I have to admit that I am guilty of buying cards for my collection for no apparent reason. I think my focus today is buying cards that I think are neat....and obscure. What is your focus? Show a card if you want to....

woops...I need to add I am working on 3 sets (sort of)....D303 master set of both General Baking back and Mothers back, 1916 W-Unc Big Head set and T209-1 set...not quite type collecting but gives me something to search for (and spend money on; right Jeff?)

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Leon, from what I can tell your focus is buying every card you can until there is no money left in your bank account. That is a worthy focus, one of which I have practiced for years.

My focus (today) is Cobb, Chase, Jennings, Brown, Donlin, Mathewson, McGraw and, to a lesser extent, Greenberg and Koufax. And any other card I like.

Our focus
has been on the expansion of our collections of Negro League and Federal League memorabilia

With that thought in mind, we wonder if anyone has ever seen a program from
either the Kansas City or Indianapolis Federal League teams? We have been active
collectors of Federal League items for more than a quarter-century and have never
seen or heard about a program from these two teams.

We appreciate your help

Bruce Dorskind
America's Toughest Want List

Posted By: barry arnold
I guess i have 3 foci at this point:
(1)
collecting packs from what i have deemed the T206 era, which means stretching 1909-1911 to encompass 206 packs and others i just have to have.
i also buy a card to hang with the pack for illustrative purposes.
So far i have piedmont, sweet cap, american beauty, epdg, old mill, hassan,
mecca, helmar, high grade, recruit(2 diff. factories),pirate, egyptienne
straights.

(2) doing my brand of 'type' collecting by picking one card from each year
surrounding the 206 era and framing them together, alongside the packs display. so far i have 1906 and 1908-1915. I'm thinking 1900-1915 will be the goal.

(3)knowing that being through with the Monster means looking at the cards
several times a week, researching key elements which arise as i do the looking, and continuing to sit in disbelief upon realizing there's still so much to
investigate.

best,
barry
Posted By: B OBrien
I am in full blown addict mode. I have sold off 90% of my odds and ends collection to fund a VG-VGEX T206 HOFer and notable players with the different T206 backs. This got started late in the spring when I bought an SGC 40 Lenox Johnson from the cardtarget shut down. I sold off nearly all of my T cards in college to pay the cost of living (beer and girls, and wasted the rest), and managed to stayed away for a few years after, because I know I have a problem, and not the kind of money to back it up. Here is where I stand:

American Beauty 350: Bresnahan SGC 50
Broad Leaf 350:
Drum:
Cycle 460:
Blank:
Tolstoi: Red Cobb SGC 40
Lenox: Johnson SGC 40
Piedmont Factory 42: Johnson SGC 40
Old Mill: Blue Chase SGC 40
Old Mill Southern:
Sovereign 460: Black Chase SGC 50
Polar Bear: Speaker SGC 40
EPDG: Kelley SGC 50
Uzit: Merkle SGC 40 (on the way)
Sweet Cap:
Hindu:
Carolina Brights:

I am looking for a Shag for the OMSL and a Matty port. for the Sweet Cap spot. The bad news is I am running out of things to sell to finance this, and I have been cut off from the bank account. The wife does think they are "pretty" though. If I olny had my old T's left from when I was younger, I would be a lot better off.

I had been looking for all of Brown's cards in the T206 and started noticing that what used to sell as a 6 was now a 7, what once was the price of a 4 is now a 5 and so on. Now's the time to strike if you can find one. Maybe there are some Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac shareholders on the board that will sell you one cheap.

Posted By: Joe Drouillard
Hello Everyone,

I'm just grinding away at collecting the monster. I'm trying to add about fifty good looking cards to my collection every six months, so with the 170 that I own now I should complete the set in about four years, but there are always interesting decisions that have to be made. What seems "good looking" one day, doesn't seem so "good looking" the next. Take a look at the two cards below--which one would you keep? The SGC50 is better centered, with a sharper registration, but the corners are soft. The ungraded example has great corners, but there is a ink mark in lower border next to the name. Normally, I would be turned off by a marked card, but boy those corners on the ungraded card are tempting. Obviously, when you collect prewar cards you will always be trading one flaw for another, but trying to decide which flaw to accept is interesting.

Best wishes,

Joe

Now I am going to work on the master set including the '08 and '09s

I have temporarily stopped buying Exhibits until the whales stop feeding!

Worches have become an interest for me, except that they are so darn scarce. I just picked up Lefty Grove off the BST.

Last but not least, my Pinkerton postcard collection is still expanding. I recently picked up a Matty off of Ebay for $6.00. It wasn't hidden, but it ended the last night of the National which is the only explanation I can think of for the great deal I got.

Jeff

Posted By: ChiSoxFan
My long term goal is to get at least one card of every White Sox player, manager, coach, owner (must be shown as White Sox).

Other collecting interests are:

1. Indianapolis Hoosiers (1887-1889)
2. W572 set
3. T206 White Sox Team set (Sweet Caporal, Factory 30)

For the "modern" stuff:
1. Complete run of Topps base sets (my first cards I bought was a pack of 1976 baseball)
2. Dave Concepcion (PSA graded)
3. Chris Bootcheck

There is probably more, but as you can see my focus shifts a lot. At one time I was trying to a Game Used bat card of the 300 HR club members (showing the team they hit #300 with). I have also looked into getting a card of every player (Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Hockey) that was born in Indiana. This is where my Chris Bootcheck collection got started.

ChiSoxFan

Looking for T206 Sweet Caporal Fact. #30 White Sox in Poor to Fair condition.
