Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: barrysloate
My current vintage card auction is now online for preview at www.sloateauction.com. Bidding will begin on Thursday June 7 at 10:00 AM. We will accept both online bidding as well as phone bidding if you prefer.

There is a very nice selection of rare and obscure vintage cards, highlighted by Hal Lewis's wonderful collection of Hall of Fame rookie cards.

I would like to thank SimpleAuctionSite.com for helping me develop my first website that allows online bidding, and for the very professional manner in which they got it running. And I would also like to thank Joe DiSomma for printing another beautiful catalog (they're already in the mail) and delivering it ahead of schedule.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at bsloate@att.net or simply post your questions on this thread. Good luck to all! Regards, Barry

Posted By: Jim Clarke
Barry I like the way you make every lot single. I think now-a-days the larger groups do NOT do as good for a consignor. I wonder how these lots will end up? Wonder why some auction companies just want the HIGH per lot price when they are actually leaving money on the table (in my eyes).

Looking at Brunner lots in Sloate

http://www.sloateauction.com/catalog.aspx

<a href="http://www.mastronet.com/index.cfm?action=DisplayContent&ContentName=Lot%20 Information&LotIndex=71558#photographs</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.mastronet.com/index.cfm?action=DisplayContent&ContentName=Lot%20 Information&LotIndex=71558#photographs</a>
Posted By: Hal Lewis
Wrong guess.

Consignor not overly excited about it... but hoping it all turns out OK.

Just praying that people are wise enough to search through the "group lots" at Mastro and add up the values of my cards.

There are some VERY NICE cards sort of lost within those groups.

|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Hal Lewis
And I don't mean to "attack" Mastro by the above statement, as "legally" I probably did sign the big long contract that gives them the "right" to sell them in groups.

I realize that for some low-end cards, it makes sense and saves catalog space...

but some of my rookie cards in those groups are very nice $500 cards.

Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Hal, that sucks a bit, sorry to hear that. I'm sure you signed your life away with that Mastro contract (by the way--ever notice how lawyers rarely read contracts that they are required to sign?). I'm surprised that they were grouped as it may impact on the total haul for a group of cards. Keep in mind, though, that Mastro probably knows what they're doing so there may be a good reason for the grouping.
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Hal Lewis
Here is an example of one of my lots:

Does a rookie card collector who wants the Orlando Cepeda rookie card care about the cool Mantle card?

And does a Mantle collector care about Cepada?

Unfortunately for me, probably not.

But then again, the grouping makes sense for "set collectors" who are interested in ALL cards from that set...

so maybe this particular Mastro auction is really targeted at those folks.

I guess we will know when it ends if "grouping" works out OK for the consignors.
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Hal, I think if the Mantle was an 8 I would agree 100% with you that there is a chance you'll lose some money on the sale -- because the Mantle 8 is almost a 3K card at that level and it would be silly for someone who wanted the Cepeda 8 to spend 3K more just to win the lot. Mastro grouped these cards together because they are all stars, all relatively similar in price (under a grand apiece). I think Mastro just saves space in its catalogue by grouping cards -- there really is no good reason on a 4 card lot like this not to just list them separately.
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Hal Lewis
I guess they probably save on shipping and handling by only having to package the cards one time instead of four different times to four different buyers.

I just know that when I was buying cards in my time...

I never bought a group of cards just to get the one I wanted.

Maybe these days people are willing to do it since they can easily sell the leftovers on EBay??

Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: leon
Personally I like to buy lots (sometimes) as I can do just what you said...and hopefully get what I want out of it a little cheaper (free if I am lucky) by selling the others. I made the E90-3 Gandil in the other thread for free by buying a group and selling the rest......regards
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Leon - exactly. It's good for the bidder. Not so good for the consignor.
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: leon
I am not quite sure how to explain it but I do think that lots will sometimes go for more than singles....I know there are some lots I have won that I ended up selling and the singles sold for less than I paid for the lot. One Old Judge group I split with a board member comes instantly to mind. Because I have the mindset that I can maybe get what I want out of a lot cheaper sometimes I think I overpay.....I hope that makes sense.....regards
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: barrysloate
Regarding whether or not a group lot has break value depends on what you pay for it. Leon and I split that Old Judge lot and we may have simply overestimated it. In general, if you do your homework you should be able to get a large group of cards for around 75-80% of break value. Doesn't leave a lot of room for error, but it's pretty competitive out there.

Posted By: Cat
Myself and three other Board Members came together to bid on a near complete Collins McCarthy set. We did every kind of creative new math you can imagine and we could never get close to the individual cards equaling what the set ultimately went for. I have other experience with multi-card lots and I never seem to be able come out ahead. I try to wait for individual cards.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Same here, Cat. I'm resigned to the fact that I'm going to get hammered either way, so I find it easier to take the beatings one at a ime.

Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: barrysloate
Cat- I think a complete or near complete set will sell closer to retail than a large lot of mismatched cards.
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Dylan
Hal, since i always figure a company like Mastro will be forced to make lots out of the lower dollar cards why not only consign your blazers to Mastro and use ebay or some alterior selling format to move stuff like Cepeda rookie cards, mid grade Mantles, etc?

Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Jim Clarke
Hal, you and I are in the same boat with consignments being in this Mastro auction. Originally I had given them around 30 lots to sell. I put bigger lots together wanting them to go in the BIG auction. They only ran some of the primo cards and put my groups in the smaller auction. I would have had them run as individual lots because most of my cards would fetch around 500.00 a piece (couple of Uncle jacks, Gypsy Queens, GCM, Brunner Bread HOFer, etc..) I wish I would have had a chance to change up the lots but the collectors auction came up so quickly after the BIG one ended I did not have a chance to. Still waiting on the 45 "Standard Industry Time" Consignor check as well. I hate being a consignor, I think buying is less stress full and you get things in a timely mannor...

JC
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Jim, so if payment on your consigned lot is cleared a week after the auction you still have to wait 38 days to get paid? Isn't that the same as providing an interest free loan to Mastro?
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Hal Lewis
JC:

I am still waiting for payment from the big auction as well.

|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Jim Clarke
Since it is "Industry standards" for 45 days to get your consignor check. I will probally shop around a little harder for companies to go with on certain items. I know Barry does around 25 days. I understand auction companies do not want to issue 3-4 checks per consignor per auction. But maybe when 100% of the consignor's lots are paid for they JUST SEND THE CHECK OUT. Most auction companies boast about 98% to 100% paid.

Jeff, I know my little consignments is not making them a lot of interest, but I hate feeling like the little fish in the ocean. I want to be the happy fish in the pond.

For future consignments, I think these will be my questions.

1. Will I get zero commission?
2. Can I select how my items are arranged?
3. How quick can I get paid?
4. Try to get any other perks available at the time of consignment. Lots of aution companies out there trying to drum up consignments.
5. Are there any hidden reserves?
Posted By: leon
Has anyone that is lamenting about not getting paid quickly by any auction company actually called them and asked if they could get their money sooner? If the auction rules say you will be paid in 45 days, or 60 days, then that is it. I would guess if you called them and asked to be paid sooner then they might be able to accomodate you. Or you can just bitch about it on a chat board....
|

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Just to clarify:

I wasn't bitching about late payment... just letting JC know that he isn't alone.

Now whether or not JC was bitching...

I will leave that issue up to the voters.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Hal, good thing you got that disclaimer in -- your 1958 Topps lot was fading from the page in my Mastro catalogue.....that Mastro, they sure are tough!
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Now Online for Bidding
Posted By: Jim Clarke
No bitching on my part. I actually enjoy waiting on funds that have probally already been collected. It's like having the IRS owe you money where you know it will come, the question is when? I mainly stated that I DID NOT KNOW INDUSTRY STANDARDS. I like many do not always read the fine print when dealing with companies you TRUST. Leon, maybe you should tell Mastro it takes 20-30 days for banners ads to get up and running on the board after payment is recieved. I hear that is normal lead time for web companies? I bet you over achieve and do it a little faster don't you... (now that was a little bitch)

JC

Posted By: leon
Banners always get put up within 24 hours and usually within 3-4 hours. I don't ever want to give good or excellent service. It needs to be great. I have had a few situations with Mastro and other auction houses. By calling and explaining my issue to them, and being respectful and courteous, I have gotten satisfactory resolution 100% of the time. I know I am a good, but not the biggest, customer and don't expect too much hand holding. I want them to WANT to deal with me. I don't want them saying under their breath that, although I spend some money, my shi* to equity ratio isn't very good. I don't want to be a pain in their rump. For the record my last Mastro consignment was low 5 figures. The exact last day when I was to expect payment is when I got it. If I would have wanted it faster I would have called and I am sure Doug and staff would have helped any way they could. Again, I am positive they would have done whatever I wanted within reason....I don't put extraordinary demands on auction houses except to do the best they can for me..It's just the way I prefer to do things...some will disagree as always......best regards

edited spelling
