Maybe I should be showing this in the other post regarding the essoteric definition of just what is considered a "Card" (?)

Greg

Posted By: Zach Rice
Greg-

I cannot answer that question. My guess it is just a labeling error due to ignorance of the team. The label on the holder should say "Boston Red Stockings", not "Boston Red Sox". It may have been the case that SGC could not fit the words “Boston Red Stockings” on the paper label. I guess they thought they could just shorten the team's name by putting “Boston Red Sox” on the holder, unfortunately, this is not correct.
Posted By: Zach Rice
Thanks Greg. I agree, the holder shouldn't matter. As a matter of fact, Mr. Ryan is now frammed in such a way that the label of in the SGC holder can not be seen .

Posted By: Scott Elkins
Only one question - How in the world did you get SGC to assign that card a numerical grade???? SGC must not like me, as they even send back cards I send them that are cut short from the factory with only an authentic grade (then, I have seen the SAME cards graded numerical grades when they appear in Mastro auction lots, long after I got rid of them). Guess I need to talk Jay into letting SGC advertise on our forum, so I can get handcut cards like that Welch into holders with a numerical grade!?!?

This last line is JOKE, as I know the card was graded before SGC was advertising with Leon. I even have the old Lipset catalog where Leon won it from. I don't feel it deserves a numerical grade however no matter when it was graded - Authentic would be fine, but with all the trimming, not a numerical grade certainly (no matter which grading company slabbed it nor when).

Posted By: leon
I am not positive it's hand cut but it does look like it. I guess we could ask Derek Grady as he graded it. I still say any card that was hand cut should only get an A or a numerical grade with the qualifier of "handcut"...thanks for being part of the best vintage baseball card chatboard on the net too...It's a pretty friendly place most times... ....
