Posted By: Brad Green

I am curious what each of you do for a living. How do you pay the mortgage? We all collect baseball cards, but we need that paying job to be able to afford to buy these great old cards.

I'll start the thread by saying... I'm an aerospace engineer. Specifically, I use Computational Fluid Dynamics (complex computer programs that solve the equations of fluid mechanics on multiple-processor, high-performance computers) to evaluate the external aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft.

What do you do?

Posted By: Bob S
I too was a Philosophy professor (speciallizing in ethics/symbolic logic...btw, ethics is an arcane word no longer in use )) from the mid 70's thru the mid 80's Then I combined Systems engineering with futures trading until I "temporarily" retired in '95 to care for my lovely wife (who was a wonderful jazz pianist) who finally lost her battle with breast cancer in '99.

Then after a several year period of serious depression and isolation, I resumed futures trading until my Lyme put me permanently on the shelf last year. I will live out my days very modestly slowly liquidating my collectibles.

I am probably one of the only board members who wishes they were older than they are (I'm 58). But life is still so very sweet. Nature and its' glorious variety sustains me (after Physics and Philosophy, Meteorology is my favorite hobby..... collecting is, and has been for 30 years my mistress ), and I can live on ~15k/yr. ...yes that's not a typo.

Best to all.

Bob

PS: to lighten up my post a bit more, let me add that, yes, I do realize that it reads more like a post to a support board than a vintage card board...LOL

Additionally, I believe that within this post I have taken over the all time board record for the aggregate use of parentheses, qouotation marks, and elipses.

One last comment...I'm a bit surprised that so far, at least there are no other current or past futures traders, or pro gamblers (same thing, really), for that matter in our group. But many more people will respond to this very interesting post, so I'm nearly certain that a few will show up. And I have managed to add to the record holding status I mentioned above in this last (I promise) paragraph. And I'm not even a juicer...ROFLMAO

Always looking for an excuse to write about cards, so if anyone has an idea for a story that would appeal to the masses on Long Island, shoot me an e-mail. (I'm already thinking that in 2009 I'll pitch a "T206 turns 100" story.)

Just recently got a mortgage for the first time, which is why I had to sell off my collections in the first place. Sold my card, comic and record collections (yes, I'm a ridiculously obsessive collector) to fund the down payment. Now that we're settled in the house, I'm getting back into collecting and decided to tackle vintage cards -- primarily T206. Amongst card collectors, the reference is amusing as there have been a number of card issues from the late 1800's to middle 1900's that have featured the image of one or other Sioux Chiefs.
So, it was just an "In the huddle" joke, not meant otherwise.

Kind regards
Daniel

Whichever side of the mascot issue one takes, this gives keen insight into why Lakota wouldn't consider it an honor or privledge for a college to call themselves the Sioux. The Lakota will consider a college's choice of the name 'Sioux' to be adversarial to the tribe, condisending or ignorant ('The don't even know what we call ourselves')-- none of which can reasonably be interpreted as honoring of the tribe.
