Josh Gibson items
I know his stuff is extremely scarce but was curious to see if anyone has any items of his they could share. Greatly appreciated. Also does anyone know how many known examples of his autograph have been authenticated?

This seems to be the grail.

Outside of anything that can be documented as “game used”, that piece has to be the grail. One of the greatest pieces of memorabilia known to exist, and (true to form) PSA cannot even get it centered within the holder. Impressive!

A snapshot collectors grail.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f21d4ed6c6.jpg

Many years ago I had a barnstorming program that included the Rochester Red Wings and whatever team Gibson was playing for at the time. The program included a nice pencil autograph by Gibson. That's one I wish I still had. Sorry no image.

Wow some amazing stuff! Keep it coming

It looks like the first page of the program ended up upside down, but you get the idea. I had this way back in 1995. |
1934 Pittsburgh Crawfords (at Yankee Stadium taken by famous Harlem photographer James VanderZee).

Gray's vs. the US Army in the '40's (fundraising game for the war.) Usually Satch graced the program covers, but Josh grabbed this one!

The program was from 1943. All the soldiers were from PA (they were a strong team -- (30 and 3) -- and had a couple of major leaguers on the roster. Grays won the game though, 6-3. Gibson, Leonard, Bell, Wilson and Brown all played for the Grays. Leonard homered, and Gibson doubled and tripled. What a game, and not really covered in the history books. Everyone always talks about the Ruth war bond games, this was the Grays war bond game!

That is MAGNIFICENT!

Yes, please share the rest of the scorecard - it's a real beauty. A look at the lineup and uniform numbers would begreat interest to Negro League historians, and I doubt there'll be another chance to see one again.Thank you for showing it here

1950-51 Toleteros Joshua Gibson
1 Attachment(s)
Here is my 1950-51 Toleteros Joshua Gibson. I will be getting it graded at the National next week. Hoping for a PSA 4!
There are ~28 copies of the Toleteros Josh Gibson to exist. It is his only pack pulled card ever made close to when he played, a true baseball card Holy Grail, the "Black Honus Wagner". |
I am looking for an autograph if there is ever 1 available.

Holy hell. With cool papa and Satch too, among others. The biggest names from the NLB. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
It’s an amazing piece. Hank, I brought it to the trade event last year, but you did not attend. I can bring it again this year if you want. It’s beautiful in person.

Love seeing all of these Gibson pieces.
That 1937 Ciudad Trujillo photo has always been one of my favorites. Here is an early image of Gibson along with his 1928 Pittsburgh Crawfords team. Gibson is 5th from the left. This image was used by Graig Kreindler for the painting that was the basis for this poster and card. The poster includes Gibson in nine of uniforms arranged chronologically from 1928 through 1944. Ryan's Ciudad Trujillo and Jeremy's Concordio images were used for the poster as well. |

Here is another photo from Tinker's collection that was taken at the same time. Tinker has identified all of the players on the back. Gibson is in the front row, on the far left. |

According to Wiki: "Shortly thereafter, he [Gibson] was recruited by the Pittsburgh Crawfords, which in 1928 were still a semi-professional team." When Wiki says 1932-36 it's referring to when the Pittsburgh Crawfords were professional. |

What a great bunch of Gibson items. Here's my 1934 Concordia (Venezuela) team photo (3.25X5.75) with Gibson, Martin Dihigo, Rap Dixon & others.
I believe the team was in the Dominican playing a tournament. |
This thread is unreal!

This is an amazing thread. I've been collecting Josh Gibson since about 1999. I've always been a Pirates collector, but when Josh and others started appearing in Upper Deck sets, I said, "Why not? A Pittsburgh team is a Pittsburgh team!" It grew from there. Now Josh and Roberto Clemente are the two players I collect most. (Unfortunately, I can't keep up with all the Clemente cards that are released every year.)
I probably have 600-700 different Josh Gibson cards in my collection, including customs. I have some Josh Gibson rarities, but they're all relatively recent--nothing before the 1974 Laughlin Old-Time Black Stars and his HOF induction postcard--so I salivate at the memorabilia being shown here. Incredible stuff. |
So many great photos in this thread that are amazing "Kreindler Opportunities":D

Insane thread. Goodness!

Grading is so weird. A 4 out of 10 would imply that the card is somewhat below average (if “5” is average). And that’s just not fair, nor does it make sense. That looks like a 7 to me!
|
Nice trip down memory lane. I once owned the Toleteros card, snapshot photo, ‘34 Crawford’s panorama and ‘37 Ciudad Trujillo. Not luck enough to have gotten the ‘31 Harrison Studios p/c, although I tried hard. Sad to say that all are gone today but better to have once owned than never to have owned at all, correct?
