I assume we’re talking about top 3 acquisitions.
Pretty sure these are all from 2024. Took me a long time to track down the Sports Heroes Mays. |

Good idea for a thread. I think I picked up more entertainment than baseball items this year. So here are my top 3 “pick ups” of 2024
|
Whoa! I’d love to hear the story behind The Beatles autographed photo. I see John is the only one who used a marker. Very nice piece!
|
This specific signed Beatles picture is actually fairly “common”. They were signed on site, in the Bahamas, during the filming of the movie Help, and given as presents of thanks to people who worked on the film. The provenance on these is pretty clear and certain, which is key considering all the fake Beatles signatures out there (and I understand there are a ton).
|
Well it's still a wonderful signed item!

I have a clear top pre-war card for my year. My first Broad Leaf. I also finally got an Aaron rookie for my best post-war pickup of 2024.

Great items fellas. Ryan, that Beatles signed photo is off the charts.
This trio of Cracker Jack's would be my picks. https://photos.imageevent.com/threet...jcobbfront.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/threet...cksonfront.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/threet...agnerfront.jpg |
|
I was just about to post mine, then Jeff posted his...I'll wait until tmw now :D
Jeff, killer Cobbs. Ryan, awesome 2024 as well! |
Ryan - amazing Cy Young cab there, sir! The Ruth and Beatles items ain’t too shabby either!
These are probably my best three pick-ups this year: Delahanty OJ “rookie”: https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...0Delahanty.PNG Not all that exciting from a player or rarity perspective, but Mr. Muddy Ruel was the last card I needed to complete my 1923 V100 Willard Chocolates set (180): https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...100%20Ruel.jpg And then I made a trade with another Net54 member just a few weeks ago to get two more Piedmont Art Stamps closer to set completion (I now only need three more - Moriarty, Parent, and Wilhelm): https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...Engle%2025.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...Goode%2042.jpg |

This year I was able to acquire a bunch of E102s. If I had to narrow down this group to a top 3...probably Mathewson/Evers/Magee. Big thanks to Tim Newcomb who responded to my WTB post and was willing to sell several of these to me.

I'd never collected vintage until this year -- and it was a great year of education and hunting thanks to joining this site.

Great pics so far everyone! I love looking at all these great cards. Congrats to all. Here is my top three, and yes, that is a PWCC ‘E’ sticker on the back of Wagner. 😉 Happy New Year!
|
Some great items, but real show stoppers by Jeff and Ryan. Congratulations on a great 2024 guys!
|
Some unreal cards on the thread so far. That Izzy Hoffman BL is a very tough/rare combo.

My top 3 T205 pickups for 2024:

Sticking with pre-war, my favorite 3 of 2024:
|
Was a few great Ruth things for me. Pretty much felt like I won collecting with this premium.
Then got the red Ruth to complete the foursome of Ruths and a wrapper that’s a little less common featuring only the Ruth premium for redemption possibilities. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4400a8b038.jpg |

Even though I didn't pick up too many, this has been one of the best years I've had in while for adding to my projects. Good luck everyone in 2025!

My best purchase this year was this insanely rare 1989 Fleer Randy Johnson error card. I know in this section it looks like a worthless junk wax card but it is a 4 figure card. My other top 2 pickups are 2 other silly rare Randy Johnson Marlboro error cards. |
Quote:
What makes that 1989 Johnson so rare? Serious question. I know nothing of the errors of the issue aside from the Ripken FF card. |
I’d also like to know.

Great year both Jeffs.
Found this article on Ben’s Fleer Randy Johnson. I never knew. https://junkwaxgems.wordpress.com/ta...rlboro-errors/ |

As someone who loves error cards and Wade Boggs is my favorite player I need the 1983 Topps wrong back error with Wade Boggs on the front and Luis Aponte on the back to complete the pair. I had been looking for this wrong back pair for easily 35 years now. I was so extremely fortunate to pick up the Luis Aponte front with the Wade Boggs rookie back a few years ago from a fellow member who ran across a large lot of 83 Topps wrong back cards. |
This thread is a curated collection of unbelievable eye candy. Jeff, Jeff, Ryan, Sam, DJ, et al, congrats on a great year.

This is a great thread.
Here's my 3, for sure! (although I did recently sell the Ruth)... |
I feel like I am in a card museum. Very nice idea for a year end thread.
My modest contribution: I've wanted a signed Louis Exhibit for many years: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ed%20card.jpeg The 1972 STP Richard Petty is basically the 1952 Topps Mantle of NASCAR: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ed%20card.jpeg |

I had to spend a couple days thinking about this, but going to go with these three! I added some cool stuff this year, as I sold all of my other alternative investments late last year, other than dirt, so actually had cash to deploy. This year will be very different, gotta sell to buy this year.
T206 Eddie Collins, Blank back. The one Collins that was missing from my original backs line, back in the day. T206 Fred Merkle, Brown Lenox back. I wasn’t able to land my old Uzit Merkle from the original backs line, but got this at roughly the same price as what my old Uzit sold for a couple weeks prior to getting this one. Rose and Co. Nap Lajoie PC. Just one of the best looking prewar cards around, in my opinion. Super fun year of collecting and working on the backs line. A big thank you to all the folks that I’ve met this year, virtually, and all the folks that have sold, traded or bought with me on the BST. Thanks to all, Bob |

Love the Rose and Company Set so nice pick up |
Thanks Jeff! That Ullman Matty in your Flickr is really growing on me. Hadn’t really noticed that set until digging through the Stardard Catalog a couple months ago. Very cool set!
It sounds like I have a long list of suitors, if I ever decide to trade the Rose Lajoie or Chance! Take care, Bob |

I had to give it a little bit of thought as ive had some really good/fun pick ups this year. I think these three are probably my top 3 pick ups of the year.
Honrable mentions go to the 1954 Topps Hank Aaron PSA 1 and T206 Shag Shaughnessy Old Mill SGC 4 |

1. I can get the Felix Mendelssohn Jackson from you 2. I can get the 1915 Real Photo Post card Babe Ruth (above post) from Ryan 3. Figure out how to re-allocate my collection to create the resources for the above allocation 4. Last need to figure out how to lower the bar :D |

2024 has been a disappointment in that I have not been able to add a card to my Sam Rice collection. These would be my 3 best pickups for 2024:
- 1889 N173 cabinet of Sam Wise, showing him with Washington. - 1889 N173 cabinet of Pete Sweeney, Washington. I have a N172 card of Sweeney with this pose. - 1921 White's Tip Top Bread card of Ben Egan, who was a coach for the 1924 Senators team. |

Besides my standard hoarding and picking up occasional stars and variations if the prices work, I basically got shut out this year when it comes to epic pick-ups.
However (that's a big however), I was able to secure a terrifyingly tough career-contemporary Mickey Mantle card, the 1967 Laughlin World Series #61 'With Address' version. Since there were seemingly (at most) only 300 of these cards ever issued (and Lord knows how many are still in existence), it is a truly substantial card that rarely sees the light of day (unlike the later reprints/further prints without the address on back). I was so thrilled, in fact, that I even made a strange (but hopefully entertaining) video about the card and the set for my YouTube channel. :D Attachment 645492 |

Some really amazing cards in this thread. Nothing that special from me, but here are my two favorite type cards of the year and my one add to a set I am collecting.
|
Bought & sold & traded last year
My (4) major hauls were my 1916 unc BIG Heads- 2-Sisler's, and 2-Sam Rice's |
