Let's Go Mets!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N4VIXM1RJk

I was hijacking another thread, so I figured I would repost the above awesome 1986 Mets video (which, as the first seconds of the video prove, is also related to our hobby).

The Mets are going to do it! Yes, they've got the Phillies coming up, but the Braves are choking. The Mets have got major mojo. I think they will be the most dangerous Wild Card team.

cgjackson222 09-12-2024 09:12 AM

Love this video and love the current Mets squad. HUGE series starting tomorrow with the Phillies. LET'S GO METS!!!!

This is also a pretty cool video! Probably less coke used during the production of that one also.

ESPN gave the Mets less than a 15 percent chance to make the playoffs two weeks ago.

Let's go Mets!

cgjackson222 09-13-2024 06:04 AM

Yeah, I’ve been looking at those espn odds too. Mets were at 12% midway thru their 9 game winning streak and we still haven’t passed the Braves in % playoff chance.

Hopefully we play well against the Phillies.

I’m annoyed so many games down the stretch won’t be called by Gary, Keith and Ron, but rather ESPN, Fox and Apple TV. I think tonight’s game is on ESPN+ (which I don’t have).

Snapolit1 09-13-2024 07:32 AM

#LGM. They have a tough two weeks left. If Pete and Nimmo don't start getting hits in important places I don't really see it, but pitching has been great.

Wish they were playing the White Sox the last 3 games of the season and not the Brewers.

Hopefully the Brewers are saving their best pitchers for the playoffs, and go easy on the Mets.

That second to last series vs. the Braves could be make or break.

bk400 09-13-2024 09:23 AM

And the Braves are going up against the Dodgers. I'm rooting for Ohtani, Betts and Freeman to light up Turner Field.

Shoeless Moe 09-15-2024 05:54 PM

whoops, my bad.

bk400 09-15-2024 08:15 PM

Lindor leaving the game and getting an MRI on his back is not a good sign.

bk400 09-17-2024 09:16 AM

Thanks to the Dodgers, the Mets are still looking strong to very strong. Let's go Mets!!

bk400 09-28-2024 07:35 PM

Mets are fumbling at the goal line.

The Mets seem to want to back into the playoffs. Well it's not going to happen. They needed to win at least two out of their last three games now.

Mets win and Arizona loss clinches a playoff spot for the Mets because they have the tiebreaker over Arizona.

jayshum 09-29-2024 04:42 PM

Worst possible outcome for the Mets and Braves. They will definitely have to play both games tomorrow then someone will have to travel to San Diego and if they split, one will be going to Milwaukee, and play again on Tuesday.

You can't make this stuff up though. The two teams who still need to play a doubleheader have identical records and are both in playoff contention. Insane. BTW If Atlanta wins game one and clinches, there is going to be I assume a big backlash when Sale doesn't pitch game two.

BobbyStrawberry 09-29-2024 05:29 PM

Too bad they don't play tiebreaker games anymore. We could have had a 3-team tournament Monday night after the doubleheader!

jayshum 09-29-2024 05:32 PM

I just read that one of the games is actually a makeup from a rain out in April. I can't believe they didn't play it earlier during the season but rescheduled it for the last week of the season. Who wants to play a doubleheader then regardless of what ended up happening.

Yeah, Arizona needs a sweep by someone while a split gets both the Mets and Braves in. Whoever wins game 1 is in and isn't going to want to waste a starter in game 2 so not looking good for the DBacks, but you never know what can happen regardless of who is pitching and playing.

Take off your Phillies blinders. It's unbecoming to look at everything from the perspective of a single team.

But yay for the Mets making the playoffs! Unfortunately I can't see any way they can now eliminate both the Atlanta Braves (who belong in Milwaukee) and the Arizona (should be Phoenix) Diamondbacks from the playoffs.

:(

JollyElm 09-30-2024 04:00 PM

Jet lag is a b*tch.
I sort of want my Mets to lose this second game, so they can just go up to Milwaukee and avoid the cross country flight and tiresome aftermath.
But, not really. I always want 'em to win!!!!

They said on the Mets broadcast that it was an injury, but I have a feeling he'll be cured for the next series if they make it.

Gutsy move not to start him in game two with the season on the line, if he was healthy.

Mets broadcasters were saying they don't think Sale is healthy. Apparently his velocity was down in his most recent start. Given his predilection for injuries, it wouldn't be surprising.

What game that first one was though. Lindor played his heart out.

Whatever happens with the Brewers, who have owned the Mets in recent memory, its a big achievement to come back and make the playoffs after being 22-33 on May 29th.

Mets have been the best team in baseball since the start of June, and have been very fun to watch. I hope it continues.

bk400 09-30-2024 06:18 PM

Ohtani is the best player in baseball. Hands down. No argument from me. But without Ohtani, the Dodgers are still a playoff caliber team. Without Lindor, the Mets are somewhere between the Marlins and the Rockies.

Yeah Sale and Trout. It looked as though Sale had broken the jinx though. Maybe just a sore arm or something.

Sale hasn't pitched in over 10 days. Yesterday, there were reports that he would only pitch today if game 2 was an elimination game for the Braves. It was, but he didn't pitch so it's unclear what's going on. I guess we'll see who starts the next few games for the Braves. I think both Fried and Lopez are available so they can potentially give Sale more time if it is an injury.

If he and Trout ever were at a kid's birthday party together, they would both get career ending injuries. Talent wise he's not that far from Verlander, Scherzer, even Kershaw, but man he has not managed to stay healthy including freak injuries.

The Detroit Tigers have had a similar come-from-behind story in the American League. It would really be something if the two met in the World Series.

Alonso is going to look good in a Cubs uniform next year. He'll like Wrigley.

Pete Alonso belongs in Flushing. Stevie Cohen should pay him the highest bid plus 5 percent and make everyone, including himself, happy.

Every at bat lately had him looking like a sure out. It was really depressing...and then BOOM!!!!!!!!! with one swing of the bat he instantly adds many more zeros to the left of the decimal point in whatever free agent contract he will sign.

Metsies on an amazing unfathomable roll right now. I don't know how this insanity continues . . .but I hope it does. Been a long wait for this level craziness in Flushing.

The vibes at CitiField are insane. Steve Cohen was in the parking lot crashing tailgaiting parties and posing for pictures.

I was in law school in Boston in 86. I was well known as the big Met fan in my class. Was quite a scene. I watched most of the series by myself. Was very glad the Sox eventually won a WS. Really a terribly unfortunate deal for Buckner, who was a great player and a good guy.

I was at the Boston games, it was great baseball even if the Mets won. I blame Calvin Schiraldi much more than Buckner, and the only thing worse was watching the repeat horror in Game 7. People tend to forget the Buckner play only tied up the Series, it didn't end it. The Sox had a 3-0 lead in Game 7.

I did hate them but in addition to the incomparable Gooden, they had some really good players who were fun to watch: Carter, Strawberry, Hernandez, Dykstra.

bk400 10-11-2024 08:45 PM

I am absolutely biased, but the 1986 Mets were the greatest team in history. The Red Sox put up a good fight, but even when the Mets were down 3-0 in Game 7, the outcome seemed inevitable.

Totally agree that Buckner took more of the blame than he should.

Well, Mets - Dodgers is going to be fun. When Yamamoto doesn't have the yips, he looks untouchable. He might be the key to the series for the Dodgers.

LOL disagree that it was inevitable, what happened is they brought back Calvin Schiraldi. I will never forget when they flashed to Rice smiling in the dugout after the Sox went up 3-0. I felt pretty good about the game at that point too, curse or no curse.

Pretty evenly matched teams, lots of stars. Sox were not exactly hurting with Clemens, Boggs, Rice and Evans, and Baylor still capable as well.

bk400 10-13-2024 09:12 PM

Ugly if you're a Mets fan. But the great thing about baseball is a one run win tomorrow would even the series and give the Mets home field advantage.

bk400 10-14-2024 05:53 PM

Stop the presses. I've found the key to beating the Dodgers: hold the top five guys in the order hitless for the next three games.

I'm just holding my breath and hoping that Ohtani doesn't blow up Citi Field. He's kind of due for one of those crazy runs.

Precisely! My favourite example is the 1960 World Series victory of the Pirates over the Yankees.

;)

bk400 10-16-2024 11:36 PM

Ok, this might come off as a bit of a rant, but the tone is meant to be lighthearted:

1) I watched a replay of Ohtani's home run earlier tonight. First, there is no way that guy is 210 lbs. I'm not an expert in sizing up other men, but he looks to me like he's 250 or 260.

2) I read that he holds the vertical jump record for the Angels AND the Dodgers. At 250 lbs, give or take, that's not normal. I think the Mets have to lodge a protest and get that guy tested for steroids.

3) You know who's not on steroids? Francisco Lindor.

Let's Go Mets!!!

Ha! For the avoidance of doubt, I don't actually think Ohtani is on the juice. I just think he's a freak of nature that I wish was playing for the Mets.

But I understand why a guy like Ohtani wouldn't want to play for the Mets.

bk400 10-17-2024 11:01 PM

I have to stop yelling at my computer screen. You know what was sad? I'm watching the MLB.tv broadcast, and at the end of the game, you can hear some Mets fans saying that their team sucks. Those guys must be the Yankees fans who couldn't get tickets to the Guardians game. Or maybe they're also Jets fans and have PTSD.

The Mets don't suck. They've outperformed expectations. But let's face it: you're not going to beat the Dodgers if you let f**king Ohtani blast one and walks three times for Mookie Betts. You can't walk like a million guys and then when it's your turn, leave the bases loaded a million times.

It's uncanny in how many games giving up walks, especially two out walks, are what undid the losing team.

BobbyStrawberry 10-18-2024 10:31 AM

Well, it was a fun year. No one expected them to even make the playoffs, so this was quite a run.

We seriously need some pitching upgrades next year if a championship run is in the cards.

Fans of JIM: Jets, post 1995 Milbury/Wang Islanders, Mets

We have a defeatist atitude. I'm lucky enough to have seen the Cup years and the '86 run. But these younger fans and Jets fans? Not a lot to root for especially when there is a better option in town. (Not so much for hockey, but football and baseball...the alternative is superior.)
