2024 National Pickups

Those Kreindler T206s are beautiful!
|
That’s a major Don, for the Don collection, Don. Congrats
|
My only pick up was COVID.

Hi Don - it was nice meeting you at the dinner on Thursday.
My lone pickup. |
|
It's remarkable what an absolute geezer Cy looked like as an active player. Graig did his usual great job in capturing it.

Amazing pickups! I too like the Kreindler T206 type cards (and the Drysdale looks really nice also). The miscut Ryan rookie is really cool. I can't remember seeing other miscut MB cards so it is really cool to have the Ryan rookie like that. Great Matty postcard and autographed cards too! I also really like the Cobb T206 and Ruth cards.
I could not attend this year but a friend of mine texted me about this thinking I might want it. I am very glad to have it as I really like the look of the players. I think I have seen a few others made of similar material but I do not recall ever seeing this one before. I like unusual 19th century display items. Alan |

Spectacular imagery on that 19th Century figural piece! Can you tell us what it may have been used for, as well as the size? I can't seem to wrap my head around what it is! |
Thank you Mark! I do not have it in hand yet as I have to get it from my friend but I think it is 8-10 inches long. I believe it is made out of pressed paper but I could be wrong. I had one with a non baseball scene that advertised a store so I assume this one had more to it at one point but I am not certain. I also thought I saw a similar item in one of the 19th century collections that were recently auctioned (maybe the one in Hunts) but I am not sure about that either. All I know for sure is that I like it.

Hi All,
Had an awesome time at the National, cant wait to go back next year! These were my pickups, mostly trades with various dealers. I want to take this moment to shout out 3 people who are the best in the business and even better human beings. Don Hontz, Ash Jain, and Joe Tomasulo. They were generous with their time and I could spend hours just looking at their collections and talking shop with them. I'll post my thoughts from the show later...gotta get back to work! Keith |
Yup, Don and Joe are two of the nicest I've ever met in the business. And they are not interested whatsoever in taking anyone for a ride or selling bad material. In short, these are people you want to to business with.
I don't know Ash, as I think he's newer to the hobby/industry and came on the scene after I stopped attending shows, but have heard nothing but great things. |

I enjoy adding these "renamed" prewar cards when they appear and grabbed about a dozen total. Based on the new names, my theory's that the owner attended minor league or military games and kept track of those names and stats using the cards on hand. Most of them show evidence of multiple written/erased/rewritten pencil names and numbers. Now own a few dozen of them and always interested in more.

A big thanks to Jeff and Andy for bringing these to National for me. Both were really enjoyable deals, and I appreciated the conversations. Two highlight pickups from the show for me.

That's a haul, right there. My budget for the next 4 yrs....
congrats! Quote:

Brought this back from the 50c box. Imagine the guy who was stoked to label it for grading and then forgot it wasn't in a penny sleeve.

Compared to some of the pickups on this thread, here’s my paltry donation. |

Struck out a lot but managed to add this to my collection. Not the norm by any means but was too cool to pass up.

Not my only pickup at the show but I do enjoy this one. We share a last name, no relation though.

Feel like I should get t-shirts made:
I went to the National and all I picked up was Covid. I know there's several of us. |

He was sitting near the front with a dealer who had this book available for sale that depicts his artwork focused on negro league players. A question for the attendees:
I love extremely hard-to-find variations from the Topps era. Did you run across any/many of those types of things as you cruised the show floor? If so, does anyone have any pics or video showing such cards?? |

I'm a football guy but did pick up one item I think you all will enjoy. There's a well known football player batting cleanup for Toledo.

The Manush on the roster is credited by BB-R to a Harry Manush, but with a ? after his name on their website.
Per Harry Manush's minor league stats (these are so often incomplete/incorrect going back this far), his first pro team was AA Toledo that season. This might seem a bit suspicious, starting off as a pretty regular player with a AA team, when he seemed to never reach anything beyond A ball afterwards, going from AA to A to B to D! |
Jeff that's a fantastic program

Fantastic pick ups and stories everyone, very enjoyable reading in this thread!
This year's National was so relaxing and enjoyable to me and was able to spend it with my son, Tyrus; and my dear friend Jeff! It was so nice to see so many great dealers that I have done business with or talk to every year. I try my best to buy something off the folks that I know each year, but with my focus narrowed down to just about 3 sets, I had to keep my $ focused and was unable to purchase from some I usually do.... but a shout out to those that I was able to purchase from who worked with me on pricing and I was extremely pleased with the pricing and purchases that I had. Thanks again to all of you!!! Tim Kindler These great T206 Pick ups, including the DEMMITT St. Louis, gets us down to 23 left in our T206 Set that Jeff and I are building as friends! The 19 T205s, including 3 Hall of Famers gets us to about a 1/3 of the T205 set that my son and I are building together. |

Phil and Daryl
Thanks!!!! I really enjoyed The National this year!!! Had my son with me, a great friend, got to talk with dealers that I've respected and known for a long time, and met some new ones, everyone is in good health it seems which is the most important part!!!! The only thing that I can complain about is the line to get pizza!!! Anyways, I knew that Saturday that traffic, lines, prices, etc. would be tough, but I love my 1 day that I get at the National every year and I believe it is what you make of it.... Positive or Negative, and I choose to be realistic, but positive. Take care all! |
