What’s everyone’s favorite set? I’ll go first!
1 Attachment(s)
My favorite set atm is the 2003 Gallery HOF Set. As an art student I’m already a fan of painted sets, and gallery scratches that itch perfectly. I especially love the artist proofs which are a high quality refractor parallel! The checklist for this set, is as the name implies; full of Hall Of Famers. Including some stellar relics and autos! I only have a couple cards of this set atm, but am honestly considering grabbing more! Here’s a picture for reference. What’s everyone else’s favorite set? Let me know!

Mine is the T3. I do not have any but a beautiful set. I will get one some day. Either Safe At Third or Out At Third.........one day.

T202. In one card you get:
The equivalent of 2 T205s A vintage action b&w photo Interesting and extensive biographies on each of the 3 panels All at an affordable price, especially the ones with HOFers in the center panel but not on the ends. Not my card but here's an example of Collins and Baker on a vintage, early career card, for under $200: https://www.ebay.com/itm/386794602639 |

T205 gold boarder…beautiful design, amazing HOFers, and first time (or close to it) player bio and stats were documented on a baseball card.
|
1954 Bowman Baseball. Classy, simple design, almost all of the 1950s greats in this set.
On the other end of the spectrum, I remember the first time I saw the 1975 Topps Baseball cards. The colorful, busy design blew me away too, I had to have them. |
+1

Favorite set that I finished is 1933 Goudey and my favorite card's Joe Judge. Simple, elegent work. |
This is another vote for the 48/49 Leaf set. Baseball cards as pop art! I even like the poor registration.
53-56 Topps are also very good, but Leaf is my favorite. |

1933 Goudey by far!
|
Pre-war. There are so many, hard to choose just one, or two, but...
1A - T206 2A - T205 - Really tough to beat a nice looking T205. Just look at Leon's T205 Cobb and that says all you need to know. Someday I'll have one. Post-war, '53 Topps |
One set? I collect everything from baseball to pin-ups, so one set...
If I had to pick a favorite baseball set it would be 1954 Topps. I've built, sold and rebuilt it 3x already. https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0PSA%203_1.jpg Basketball is the 1969 Topps set. Loved it since I was a kid. Built it 2x: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...hamberlain.jpg Boxing is actually easy for me: H815 Adam Hats premiums https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20Dempsey.jpg Entertainment, 1976 Topps Star Trek https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...Enterprise.jpg Football, 1968 Topps. Again, a childhood favorite of mine: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ps%20Starr.jpg Hockey is 1975 Topps. First set I really built from packs in hockey: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...to_%20Tony.jpg Motorsports, gotta go with the 1976 NASCAR postcard set from STP and Racing Pictorial. Just great looking cards. https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...6%20Baker.jpeg Nonsports, I am fond of a series of steamship postcards made in Japan in the interwar period. https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ize/img826.jpg Pin-ups, I like a rare set of Cuban tobacco cards from Trinidad y Hnos https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...dy%201%20a.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...dy%201%20b.jpg Soccer, 1968 Crack from Argentina. https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...vos%20Pele.jpg |
Pre-War would be T206. Because I don't feel the need to be "different."
Runner-up: T3. See above. Post-War is Topps 1961, which was the very first set I collected at the tender age of six. I know it's not highly thought of, but I do reserve the right to be "different" when I want to be. Runner-up: 1964 Topps. Just Because. Overall favorite set - M114 Baseball Magazine Premiums. Because it's a challenging set, unique in many ways, impossible to complete, nearly impossible to catalogue or checklist, and because I unaccountably found myself an expert on the set. And if you don't believe me, go ask Doug Goodman! |
The N142 Honest tobacco cabinets. Only 4 ballplayers, but each one a work of art.

N172 Old Judge set. I love it because of the amount of poses and the fact that someone of these players aren't pictured anywhere else. These cards are the only picture proof of them. It's also loaded with great players, extreme rarities and various ways to collect the set.
Imagine chasing the cards of two career minor league players 135 years later because they are the only two players in the huge set on those particular teams? They are two of my favorite cards from the set. |

Pre-War Baseball - Turkey Red's, cannot beat the art.
Post-War vintage Baseball - 1953 Topps on design or 1966 Topps for sentimental reasons. Football - 1971 and 1997 Topps. 1954 Bowman a close runner up, some of the most fun I've had set building. Non-Sport - T29 Hassan African Animals is my favorite right now Boxing and overall favorite - T220 Silver, to which I have an unhealthy addiction because of the outdoor scenes, shiny surface, and the 2 fun super short prints. |

My co-favorite sets are 1910 E222 A.W.H. Caramels (because I collect Va. League cards and love rare cards) & 1925 Holland Creameries (because I collect cards of all the players who were on the 1924 WS Champion Wash. Senators team).
|
PreWar...T205 beautiful little pieces of art
Postwar...1959 Topps While I remember seeing '58s and holding some in my hands the '59 cards were the first I owned. I still get a wave of nostalgia flipping through them. |

Pre-war: hard to beat T3s
Post-war: 1965 Topps is my choice today |
T204. Ramly. It has been a curse and a blessing.

Not really a set collector, as I'm first and foremost a player collector.
But if I'm collecting a set, then it's probably going to be something that not many people collect, and that are hard to find. Lately, I've been working on a few. Hard to pick just one because they're all special in their own way. Try not to hate the fact that they're all postwar. Here's the list: 1953-1954 Briggs Meats 1960 Bazooka Complete Boxes 1962 Jell-O Complete Boxes 1971 Bazooka Numbered 1973 Topps Comics |
If the 13-card Jackie Robinson Bond Bread rookie set counts, I'll go with that. Otherwise can't beat the iconic T206
|
What’s everyone’s favorite set? I’ll go first!
If I could collect from only one set, would be the 1933 Sport Kings. So many sports, really great bios on back, a playing days Ruth, female athletes, Native American, native Hawaiian, a card with a dog. Notably missing any black athletes...but quite a diverse and beautiful set otherwise.
|
So many candidates but…
I will go with the N162 set, such a beautiful early set with amazing artwork. I dont really have a favorite but having to pick just one today it is that one. (For some reason cant load images right now)

Asking for a favorite set is a tall order. My mind changes all the time. Today, I'm going with T200. Sixteen card set with all the major stars included (Wags, WaJo, Matty, Thorpe, Cobb, Lajoie, Joe Jackson and the rest). |

Hands down, N172.
For me, the cards make 19th century baseball truly come alive because the images are real photos. They pair so well with books like David Nemec's The Great Encyclopedia of 19th Century Major League Baseball and The Beer and Whiskey League. And there are the goofy poses! :D Fred: Is this the Larry of whom you speak? ;) |
Too many....
