If You Collect Scorecards or Programs, Show 'em Here!
1 Attachment(s)
I did a search, and it doesn't appear that there have been any threads dedicated to scorecards or programs for some time; the few that popped up in the last 7 years or so stopped after 1 page. Let's see if there are still some proud scorecard and program collectors out there that have some items or new acquisitions to share with the group.
I'll start, and admittedly this first post is nothing to get too excited about unfortunately. But it is my latest acquisition and didn't set me back too much. It's a program from Jim Brown's last regular season game, in which he was ejected for fighting, but not before scoring his final career TD and wrapping up another rushing title. Thought there might be more pictures of Brown inside, but there was only one small pic and write-up. Still, it was a program I wanted to add to my collection for a couple of years...so here it is! |

This was Ted Patterson's it is signed by almost everybody on both teams.. not just on the outside the inside is loaded.
Second Program Is Babe Ruth's HR 701. Written on cover is The most exciting game I ever Witnessed won in 9th inning by rhe fighting Tigers 12 to 11. This 1897 NY Giants is very nice. Ny faced Clevland Spiders and Cy Young.. More to come. |

Matty - those are beautiful.
Jonathan - I love period notes on old programs / scorecards Jethrod - Brown's last TD is pretty darned cool, thank you for this thread, I love scored programs Here's my (first) post to this (hopefully) long running thread : Sept 11, 1928 Yankee Stadium The Babe hits #49 of the year and #465 of his career, while knocking in what prove to be the game winning runs. In response, Mr. Mack send two members of the 3000 hit club to start a rally in the 9th, but alas, Cobb pops to short in his last career at bat, and Collins does the same (he had 15 more at bats). I'm going to love this thread, apologies in advance for posting too much, but I have over 6000 potential submissions... Doug "giddy like a school girl" Goodman |

Spectacular start to this thread! I've seen a few Federal League programs in various threads in this forum but never had the chance to thumb through one myself. The Ruth 701 scorecard is amazing, and the scorecard for Cobb's last at bat---not many of those can possibly exist! I'm sure we'll see some "Holy Grail" items if the thread runs long enough!

Great programs / scorecards don't have to be older than my parents...
Here is my scorecard from Aug 12, 2018 when the Cubs beat the Nationals on a David Bote Ultimate Grand Slam. For those who don't know, an Ultimate Grand Slam is when the home team is losing by three runs with two out in the bottom of the 9th and one swing wins it. This scorecard embarrasses me a bit as I look at it now, as I usually keep a pitch count, and I'm surprised I didn't fill in all the final stats. It was a pretty amazing moment to see happen, Doug |

I collect programs related to my areas of collecting focus.
One of my favorite areas are barnstorming games. The Mays All-Stars is from the 1955 All-Star tour led by Mays and Don Newcombe. Many other greats including Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Larry Doby and others. In this particular game, Mays hit a walk-off HR. The 1945 program is from a game that Satchell Paige and Bob Feller faced off. After the game, Feller famously made comments about his belief that he didn't think that Jackie Robinson (who played in the game) was a Major League player. It led to negative feelings for Jackie towards Feller for many years. |

Programs (and yearbooks/media guides) are the part of my collection that I enjoy the most. I collect mostly Orioles, Baltimore Colts, and NY Rangers items in addition to ephemera related to games that interest me.
A few years ago I tracked down a program from the first game I attended with my Dad, a 1960 doubleheader at Yankee Stadium versus the White Sox. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EKWnIrdDQ...B/s640/IMG.png https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-djjykkzfC...0/IMG_0005.jpg https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nnW9Oa7pF...0/IMG_0006.jpg This one is from a 1951 exhibition game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the International League Orioles. The Dodgers barnstormed their way north from spring training. The O's were a Phillies farm club in 1951. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dXtcuBTOL...M/s640/IMG.jpg https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bkEshSpnP...0/IMG_0006.jpg Dodger lineup for the game: Don Thompson CF Carl Furillo LF Duke Snyder RF Jackie Robinson 2B Gil Hodges 1B Roy Campanella C (the scorer listed him as 'Campy', I love that) Pee Wee Reese 3B Rocky Bridges SS Preacher Roe P What a kick it must have been for the locals to see those Dodgers stars in person. Here's a pretty beat-up 1953 IL Orioles program, their last year as a AAA club (if you don't count some of those 1990s Orioles teams! https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2hp8e9eTG...0/IMG_0007.jpg Lastly my oldest hockey program, from a Rangers game in 1943. I picked it up because of the cover art. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V7PnYbKUL...640/img056.jpg The awesome US Armed Forces content was a nice bonus. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9-vs4GiN...640/img058.jpg https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-coeMNay8Z...640/img057.jpg https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CLpGwBYlm...640/img063.jpg |

You guys are killing me! Now I TOTALLY want to get into programs too. Some of the cover artwork and/or images are just awesome!
I know this is a silly/hard question but what should I expect from a budget POV compared to cards from the same era? Trying to figure out if my scrawny card budget can afford a few cool programs. Great thread! |

Wow! What a great thread so far!!
I can't believe that no one has ever started a scorebook thread before... FWIW, I have nowhere near the collection that Doug Goodman has (who does LOL?) But, I do have a pretty extensive collection of vintage no-hitter game programs, but rather than post the obvious, I thought I would post a few of the others that I like in my collection. Here is a scored program to HOF Sandy Koufax's NL record of 382K's in a single season in 1965. Mack Jones was K #382. I also have a scored program to Nolan Ryan's ML single season K record of 383K's in 1973. Rich Reese of the Minnesota Twins was K #383. A scored program to HOF Nolan Ryan's ML debut on 9/11/1966. Finally, a scored program to Ryan's 3509K game where he passed Walter Johnson for the All Time ML strikeout record. Tim Blackwell was 3508 which tied WaJo and Montreal's Brad Mills was K # 3509. This scored program is signed by both Blackwell and Brad Mills. Pretty cool! Yes, Guy Bourque, this post is for you! ;) Love the Stoneman 2nd no-hitter scorebook, Guy! |

I must admit, that is by far one of the wildest cover art that I've ever seen on a program! :D Doug, that scored program and ticket combo to Sandy's perfecto is quite an artifact. Awesome! I recall that I found my Koufax 382K scorebook in an antique mall that was within walking distance of my condo in Orange, CA in the early 1990's. The seller had no idea about the significance of the game and I think I paid under $20 for it. It had my name written all over it! :D |
Quote:
- era to explore first? - cover art matters a lot, I'd assume? - how do you evaluate condition and reasonable price/value? - big name player in the score card and/or a specific historic game adds a lot, i'd assume? - scorecards vs. programs vs. yearbooks... where to focus first? I still love my cards... but this sounds like a nice, affordable tangent to explore Thanks all (and if you're selling some cool items, PM me!) I love great cover illustrations Jeff |

From Stan The Man's five home run doubleheader in 1954 - both scorecards, nicely scored. Plus an original wirephoto from between games. Mr. Musial signed both scorecards for me and hearing him talk about that day was like a religious experience. "I should have had six" he laughed (he pinned Mays against the center field wall in the 3rd inning of the second game). He said he never tried to hit home runs but he wanted one in his last at bat and popped out to first. An incredibly genuine and nice man. I treasure the conversation with him as much as the scorecards.

I prefer my scorecards to be scored, but I think there are some purists that prefer unscored minty scorecards, though admittedly it's difficult to then track them to specific games unless the dates are printed on the scorecards themselves. One such scorecard with a date listed is shown below. Not very pretty, but one of my faves, because it's from the game in which a future home run king hit his first home run! |

Buy what you like. There is no right and no wrong way to collect. I prefer scored ones, I used to love figuring out the date using the box scores in my Sporting News collection (which I only collected to date my scorecards), now it's so easy for me to figure out the date from Retrosheet that I would like to sell my TSN collection (shameless plug). I once bought 7 Reds scorecards from the early 1960s on ebay for $20 including postage and in the process of figuring out the dates found that I had bought Pete Rose's ML debut game. That kind of stuff happens a lot still. |

One of my favorite Expos program in my collection is from Oct. 3rd 1981, after coming real close in both 1979 and 1980 The Expos clinch their 1st...and only post season berth of their history, I remember this game like it was yesterday, we were celebrating my parents 22nd wedding anniversery in a bar and watching the game on TV, when Wallace Johnson (added photo of me and Wallace 40years later) pinched hit a 2 run triple to put the Expos up for good in the top of the 7th every body went crazy in the bar. My addition to this thread:
I just received this wonderful and in fantastic shape 1969 Washington Senators Opening Day scorecard. Scored too. Another really cool part of this is that my sister went to this game with her boyfriend at the time. AND I HAVE THE TICKETS TOO!! She got both of the tickets and the one picture shows the front of one ticket and the back of the other one with her writing of April 7, 1969. The date is also scribed on the front of the score card. Regrettably the Senators lost to the Yanks 8-4 on that day but Hondo smacked career home run #243. And Little Tavern made the best damned hamburger you ever bit your teeth into. I so miss that place. WOOT! Butch |
That is super cool Butch
