Baseball as Fine Art
6 Attachment(s)
As an image collector there are certain cards that elevate past a simple baseball card to what I consider fine art.
It's very subjective but I'll post a few of mine that speak to me, lets see some of your favorite images. And if you have any of Graig Kreindler's work please post up, that is a great example of Baseball as Fine Art. - |

Cool thread Phil. Here are two of my favorite cards/images (neither are mine). I also think the T3 set is the most beautiful of all the sets

For me, this image really is fine art...

If you want to truly know what constitutes "fine art", get your wife or girlfriend or otherwise get a female to give her opinion. It is widely known that men have exceptionally bad taste

Really great looking cards, guys. I have always thought the orange, psychedelic backgrounds are good looking on this series.
ps...that '50 Jackson, above, is a stunning card. wow.. |
|
As much of a fine art image as you'll find in my opinion! Iconic pose!

Either way...mass produced baseball cards will never be considered "fine art!" They're super cool...and can be quite beautiful...imo. Maybe an original painting used to create a card...or a type I photo whose image was used on a card...might be considered "fine" art? But cards? NO!!!!! |

Maybe an original painting …… But cards? NO!!!!![/QUOTE] I suppose we will agree to disagree on this point. Cards are not only artistic but also very visceral . Man they bring back memories and to me this is what art is all about. |

Most of my collection are some of my favorite pieces of art as well. I'm glad you brought that up or I may not have noticed. I just naturally gravitated toward these pieces for my collection...

Beautiful art shown so far. Here are some of my faves from the Pre-War, and Post-War eras.

Anyone who says 56 Clemente isn’t art is welcome to give me theirs to rid themselves of such an unartistic work.

I'm rather surprised that no one has yet shown the the absolute finest piece of art on a baseball card. I only wish I had a better-condition example to show.

One of the finest works of art in the hobby. I have always thought so...,

I tried a few times but couldn't get a better picture of these cut card artwork pieces. These are 11 X 17 inches each and is 35 X 47 overall. They are made by fellow member John English and look amazing in hand.
I recently had him make the Big Z and need to get a frame for it yet. It is 17 X 22. I plan on getting 2 more strongmen pieces made 11 X 17 each so I can put one on each side. |

I hate not having the card (lot of swings and misses on high fast balls), but this mozaic by Caraher helps me cope while I wait for the next pitch.

I had not opened this thread, but assumed it was about the Leland's auction of the art for the 53 Mays. I read in the description that Marriott bought it at the Guernsey's sale for $88,000 and later gave it to a charity. It sold it for $246,000. |

Who could forget the artistic peak of the W512 set?
The W512 Ty Cobb is a particular gem. It shows the not-heavily documented part of his career when he was also a Batman villain. |

Japanese Menko Cards

My initial interest in Japanese menko cards was the art. Probably not everyone's taste, but I've really enjoyed them.

Cy hasn't been shown in a few days. The card really is a simple work of art, as are most E90-1s, in my view. |

No self-respecting thread about baseball cards as fine art should exist without the preeminent example of the artistic vanishing point technique as seen on the 1933 Goudey of Paul Richards.
Brian (and now I have to go down the hall and across the campus to classroom 307 in the Eccles building and learn about preeminent Greeks from Professor Frank in his Ancient Mediterranean History 201 class) Also, not my card, as this original example is likely hanging in a museum. |
Maybe this is not exactly "fine art" by definition, but it's one of the favorites in my collection dedicated to the Fidrych rookie card. The artist is Scott Silvers, who I discovered in this thread on Net54 years ago: Old thread on Scott's work
