2022 Acquisitions

Are we ready to start a new thread?
This card is from 1978-79, which was Malone's first MVP year. I saw Moses play for the Spirits of St. Louis in 1975. Caldwell Jones was also on that team, and after the 1981-82 season, when Malone averaged 31 and 14 for the Houston Rockets and won his 2nd MVP, he was sent to the 76ers in a sign-and-trade for Jones and a draft pick. The next season, Malone won his 3rd MVP with the Sixers as he led them to the NBA Championship. |
I still recall an anti-drug TV commercial Malone did in the early 80s. It was just him, drenched in sweat, slamming the ball against the backboard and catching it over and over, and either he or the announcer then says you can't do this if you're on drugs. Devastating. You could do a lot worse than have him in the low post. And you can talk about J all you want and not to take anything away from him, but Mo was the guts of those great teams.

Finishing up my graded 1971 set. Why collect the 1971 Topps Set? Because it had the greatest design in the history of basketball cards! Guys named "Skeeter," bright colors, ABA players, and many jerseys turned around backwards for the picture... love it. Just some "commons" here in these images. |

No real value, but I am thrilled to add this Fred "Downtown" Brown regional RC. He was death in the 4th quarter with a game on the line.
|
Love the 1971 set, esp. since it was the first ABA set. I wouldn't exactly call Mack Calvin a common, though he is priced like one:
5× ABA All-Star (1971–1975) 3x All-ABA First Team (1971, 1974, 1975) All-ABA Second Team (1973) ABA All-Rookie First Team (1970) ABA All-Time Team |

Also a fan of the 71's, and 'Fro's. (Shout out to Jarrett Allen, All Star.)

Ah yes, looks like Williams

Finally took the plunge. Figured I didn't want to be the guy who didn't buy an iconic card when it was "affordable":

My first ever Kobe Chrome.
|
Boy is that one hulked out. Supposed to look like this:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/IIsAA...Mj/s-l1600.jpg |
Adam I'm not sure about the refractors, but a high percentage of the regular Chromes have some greening and the ones that don't almost certainly will get there. I forget the explanation now, it may be similar to why a couple of years of Topps Tiffany tend to yellow. It's actually interesting in hand.
https://www.reddit.com/r/basketballc...rome_greening/ |
It is the dyes. Perhaps one day it will be treated like silver coin toning, which has a varied reaction among collectors. Me, personally, I do not care for the greened chromes. I have a few...unintentionally.

Mazel Tov on that LeBron card. You did well !!! Oh hell yeah !!!

I should have my Diana Taurasi rookie card back from the private signing I sent it in for in the next few days. I've decided to focus on basketball now. Lebron's rookies have a lot of room to grow, as long as they become the next iconic card the same way the Fleer Jordan has. I feel like most of Wilt's cards are relatively cheap for his status in the game. Same for Jabbar.
|
Speak of the devil. A nice mail day surprise. Wasn't expecting the silver ink or the number inscription. Very nice:

Basketball Jones
|
Caldwell was one of FOUR brothers to play in the NBA. He was surrounded by superstars and big egos, but he was a solid player, the type any coach would want on his team.

I grew up in the Washington DC area and remember Lucas well from the University of Maryland. If I recall correctly he had more of a set shot than a jump shot. I also recall that he was a very highly rated tennis player,

Any NCAAW basketball fans here?
Just picked up these for the Paige Bueckers cards |
Don`t have too many basketball cards in my collection but have always liked the look of the 1986 Fleer Jordan editions. Being a small fry, had to settle for this version of the "86" sticker.

Picked up this Rodman back in April and Pippen arrived yesterday. I like the look of the 1988 Fleer.

I was saving up for National but when this showed up on the bay I hit the buy it now pretty quick. Listed as a 1947 program, which it is. But there is a big difference between 46-47 and 47-48 and this is 46-47. Then the listed signature Chuck Connors. It is personalized so a nick for that. But there are 2 other signatures Nat Clifton and Harry Gallatin. Both Hall of famers and Knicks but both played later than 46-47. I wondered why they were on cover. When I hit Nat Clufton stats I saw the thread that connects these three. All 3 played pro baseball as well as Pro Basketball. So a nice group. On top of that Connors played in the game 1/18/47. The Rifleman only played in about 50 games over 2 seasons 46-48. So a signed program from a game he played is nice.

Really nice program Attachment 528712

Thanks .. I always enjoy when I see another collectors focus in an item. It looks like Barry put some effort into obtaining these signatures. I hope wherever he is he knows it it appreciated and that I will do my best to pass it along to someone else who appreciates it down the road.

From a board member, a very clean 1986 Mercante David Robinson.
|
My first CSG slab, and color me impressed. Clean label. Case seems solid. And it's a neat look how the area around the borders of the card is transparent.

Nice card, Ian! I have yet to get my hands on one of their new slabs.

1948 Bowman #58 Arnie Risen HOF RC. I searched for this card at this years National but didn't see even one. Ebay auction starting price $100 and I brought it home for $102.50 plus tax plus shipping $114.76 an expensive card but the next to last card I need for the set. The last needed card #69 George Mikan rookie will have to be a reprint.

Here are a couple of mine. I think if Allen would put on about 25 pounds he could really dominate the rim.

Picked up this 1984 Star Jordan Rookie Of the Year card, thanks to Phil for another smooth "54" transaction. Would really like to add the 84 Star # 101 but just to far out of reach. Keep them coming boys......
