OT...How long have you been on ebay?

Easy question, if you have ever been on ebay, how long has it been?

Next month will be 23 yrs, for me.

Two of these four e221s came from ebay. The green one from Mike Berkus.
ps...always looking for more!! You know who you are LOL

Brian Van Horn 01-20-2022 02:32 PM

Since July 3, 1998 after hearing a day or so previously about eBay on Pittsburgh station WPXI (formerly WIIC for the long term Pittsburgh residents).

mikemb 01-20-2022 02:34 PM

I'll also be 23 years in July.

I don't do a lot on e-bay, but I have been on their site since 1998. E-bay isn't what it used to be.

Dead-Ball-Hitter 01-20-2022 02:47 PM

18 years for me...

doug.goodman 01-20-2022 02:48 PM

Good timing of your question Leon, for the account I currently use, it's 24 years TODAY.

Jan 20, 1998

The account began it's life as my lovely wife's account.

My original account was older than that, she joined after me. My original ebay ID was my email address.

I've been thrown off a couple times for various reasons, all of which involve me being an asshole.

Once was when Live Nation (the concert promoter) was selling "membership packages" that included 2 free tickets to a specific show. The problem was that some of those specific shows were ones that I was handling the settlement for the band and they were neglecting to add the money they made into my settlements, claiming the tickets hadn't sold for $112.14 the membership package had.

So, me being me, I bid $1000 on every membership package they were selling (there were many hundreds of them) and didn't pay for any of the ones I won (I won all of them).

I also got all my tour settlement buddies to give their Live Nation reps shit in settlement (using back up that I provided them) and soon after Live Nation stopped selling memberships.

And I got thrown off of ebay.

Interesting question…nov 29, 1998. eBay used to be awesome as was the BST in the good all days… I mean it still is but back in the day you could buy Ruth rookie cards!!

Touch'EmAll 01-20-2022 03:03 PM

Probably about 20 years on ebay.

I remember when PSA was brand new. Check this out, what a concept, a company that will authenticate your card, grade it, then put in a special sealed case - like Wow !

A local card show dealer invited me to go in with a PSA submission. He joined as a new PSA member. I remember going thru the process with him, then we sold them thru auction in SCD magazine. I had a 1960 Stan Musial that came back an 8 grade, sold for a little over a hundred.

Needed extra money for college, so I started back in the fall of 1998 - sold lots of cards, toys and other stuff I found on the weekends. Not as active the last 5-8 years, do plan on using again and other outlets when I have the time now my kids are older.

1998 for me as well, Oct 17th. Same ID. Same as here.

JustinD 01-20-2022 03:27 PM

My first account with my ex-wife was opened in 96-97, during the days of no guidelines at all and mailing checks. What is amazing is only once ever did someone not follow through and keep the money. I remember it was a VHS for maybe 10 bucks. The world was strangely more honest when the average joe was not on there.

The current post divorce account is Nov 11 01, lol.

So final tally is around at least 25 years.

Snapolit1 01-20-2022 03:28 PM

Pretty sure my first purchase was a Rescue Hero toy for my son that we couldn’t get anywhere in NY.

Oh man, the checks! I remember having to go to the bank like three times a week, depositing all these checks and money orders that were only for a few bucks each. The tellers were always giving me such puzzled looks [emoji1]

I miss the early days!

I remember back around August 1999 there was a T206 Drum back on auction that didn't list the back in the title and the card was posted under Tobaccania rather than Sports Cards (the search function wasn't nearly what it is today). I stayed late in work (back when you could get on ebay in a financial services job) because the internet connect was better than what I had at home. I was the high bidder at about $25 until there was 30 seconds left. I had a max bid of $500 (that was a lot of disposable income for me), but unfortunately it shot up to $520 at the last second. It still hurts! :D

Approx 1998, mainly buying vintage college postcards and selling beanie babies back then. Sold a Lefty the Democrat donkey for $200 in one of my best sales, and was $2000 in the black when the bottom fell out.

Looks like 1998 must have been a big marketing push for them

I celebrated 24 years 2 days ago - January 18, 1998.

Remember needing to set your alarm to be at your computer in time to snipe an auction you didn't want to lose praying that the page refreshed fast enough, having your bid set to execute, counting down before hitting "place bid" and praying your internet signal didn't drop!?

Contacting under-bidders for things you had 2 (or more) of?

I registered in April of 1999. For several of those early years Jack87 was my bidding nemesis...my bids never could top his.

So, my best recollection is 1997. I signed up as my same username on here and shortly after changed to nlcs_sportscards or something like that. I abandoned that account around 2007 to my current account. It had something to do with paypal I think.

There were no pictures when I started. I remember seeing a T214 Victory that was not listed in the SCD. No picture, just an ad, like a classified ad.

From what I remember, there was a time when there were no watchlists, so everyone would search 'new listings' in the pre-war category. You could see the bidders you were bidding against. By the time I clicked on a card, TBob, petecld, iownit! had already placed a marker bid. I remember gabrinus from those days, and many others who are here now. CanofPrimo sniped a lot of the cards I thought I was about to win.

I remember Full Count had weekly auctions, and Dr Cycleback sold losts of baseball stuff. I remember buying a Connie Mack from Jay that I couldn't afford, so I re-listed it a week after I got it, and re-sold on eBay for an $18 profit. Good times. My first OJ was from ebay, smiling Al Maul, I also sold that one long ago. I thought selling was more fun than buying back then.

RCMcKenzie 01-20-2022 05:33 PM

Jerry, that's cool that you still have that shipping label. Brockelman and Luckey were always "heavy-hitters", I don't want to say "whales", whatever the term for, if I were bidding against them, I wasn't going to win the card.

I don't have the best memory and get things mixed-up. I know there are lots of usernames I would recognize if someone said them, like Brian mentioning Jack87. I bid against him, and sold him some cards.

I have been a member of Ebay since October of 1997. I remember the first time I searched the word "golf" only around 600 items showed up. As of now, you would get over 4 1/2 million items. A lot has happened in 25 years for all of us.

'98, as well. The system had some flaws, or features, depending on how you look at it. If you knew the handle of someone who had the same interest in a niche as you, you could see what they were bidding on ahead of time and it could help you find stuff that you may not have found yourself. Felt a little guilty doing that, but it was helpful.

Since June 4, 1998. I wonder how many of us did ebay business with each other in the 90s. I didn't have much pre-war then (wish I still had that yellow Goudey Ruth I sold though). I was mostly a 50's & 60's era collector.
