One player, different names

Hank Aaron is of course Henry Aaron on a couple of issues.
Roberto Clemente was sometimes Roberto more often Bob.
Dick Allen also was Richie Allen, and at least two years he was Rich Allen. That's amazing, THREE names.

Who else?

jason.1969 12-06-2021 12:09 PM

Pete Appleton (1939-40 Play Ball) is Pete Jablonowski for 1933 Goudey.

The obvious one David Arias David Ortiz.

Also I think Mo Vaughn was also Maurice Vaughn.

Toward the end of his career, Willie Hernandez wanted to be addressed by his birthname, Guillermo Hernandez.

He was listed as either Zach and Zack on most issues. Listed as Zachary on the back of CJs. Listed as Zachariah on his HoF postcard if not elsewhere.

Jimmy - Jimmie - Foxx - Fox

There's one that has both first AND last names with different spellings.

More recently, BJ Upton / Melvin Upton Jr.

Not to be confused with his brother Justin, of course.

Mo is a great guy. Met him at a company picnic we had for lunch one day when he just happened to be coming in to meet one of my former colleague's at a firm I used to work at. For a short time we were doing his accounting and tax work for his company, Mo Vaughn Trucking, out of Solon, Ohio I believe.

To state the obvious, Lew Alcindor --> Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I think a few other NBA players have adopted Islamic names, right? There was a guy in the early '90s if I recall.

butchie_t 12-08-2021 02:04 PM

woot! I get to add one

Ellie / Elrod Hendricks

Elrod is a much cooler baseball name. IMHO

Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Another Basketball is Keith Wilkes/Jamaal Wilkes. A couple of Football, Bobby Moore/Ahmad Rashad, Sharmon Shah/Karim Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar later sued him and he changed it to Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar.

JollyElm 12-08-2021 02:46 PM

The 'incorrect' Chad Ochocinco. (But I maintain that it does say 8 and 5, so it's fine.)

ValKehl 12-08-2021 07:51 PM

James Edward Runnels/Pete Runnels, James Barton Vernon/Mickey Vernon, Stanley Raymond Harris/Bucky Harris, & Edgar Charles Rice/Sam Rice.

Walt Hazzard became Mahdi Abdul Rahman.
And of course, in boxing, I don't even need to say it.

Cliff Bowman 12-08-2021 09:09 PM

Al Jackson/Alvin Jackson (1966 Topps). Kudos to the poster of Elrod Hendricks/Ellie Hendricks, I had that one in my head yesterday morning and then forgot it.

Eddie Mathews

He's Ed Mathews on his Topps issues but the 53 Bowman I have lists him as Eddie Mathews.

On at least one fabulous card, they just call him Rocket.

akleinb611 12-09-2021 05:32 PM

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned SF Giants shortstop, the late Jose Uribe, who played under the name Jose Gonzalez at the beginning of his career (due to variations in Spanish nomenclature).

The first time he came up to bat against the Mets, after announcing his name change, Mets announcer Tim McCarver said, "he's literally the player to be named later."

Thats also how the entire Rojas family became the Alous. At least until the recently fired Mets manager reclaimed it.

One I forgot and then re-remembered, Freddie Patek/Fred Patek.

deweyinthehall 12-10-2021 06:02 AM

Don't think it's been mentioned, but Denny and Dennis Martinez? Or how about Leo/Chico Cardenas?

How about Frank Thomas/Anonymous? Sorry - it's still early and I'm a bit punchy from lack of coffee....

Bucky Dent picked up a new middle name, but it's only regional.....:D

Peter_Spaeth 12-10-2021 11:12 AM

If not mentioned, Rich Gossage became Goose. Did any Jim Hunter cards actually say Catfish on front?

I looked for both a few days ago and couldn’t find any but several of Hunter’s cards have Jim “Catfish” Hunter as the facsimile signature.

I have a few uncut sheets of '78 Topps on the walls of my home office. My daughter and her college friends were in there one night playing pool, glanced at one of the sheets, and saw Dick Pole's card...'nuff said? Poor guy.

frankhardy 12-15-2021 09:40 AM

I can't find any cards, but there was a minor leaguer who signed his name "Jose A. Pujols". When he got to the big leagues he started signing A. Pujols. He goes by Albert now.

I used to work with a guy named Richard Head. I wonder what his parents were thinking.
