1/1 -- 1/25 Pre-War Items
We all hear about and see the 1/1 and 1/25 modern cards and memorabilia pieces now days at auction and on the internet. Let's see some real pre-war rarities...cards, cabinets, photos and other interesting pre-war gems with a known combined population of less than 25.
|
Good luck finding 25 of these:

Obviously there are probably some raw ones out there, and I don't know SGC's pop, but PSA has graded only five of these Carey type 1s:

I don't have anything super rare. 3 of my T206 Krause portraits have a combined PSA/SGC pop of 20 or less

Not quite pre-war, but I love this version of Old Gold Robinson. 1/22 combined graded. Great write up on the back.

I rather have vintage. Take for example a 1/1 Mike Trout signed card. There are probably 100 if not more other 1/1 cards of Mike Trout.

This is the only PSA graded Witmor Eddie Collins and there are only 25 total PSA graded Witmors. So that's rare, right?

This is a 1 of 1, and is currently for sale in Memory Lane (sorry for the shameless plug, but it does fit the OPs topic.

A few other rarities (from 1 of 1 to less than 10), including a rare side-kick to Jeff's amazing Joe Jax

This Type 2 R308 Tattoo Orbit of Pepper Martin (shown with the smaller R308 as well as the more common and colorful R305 for comparison) only exists as a NFT card.
Brian (NFT = Not For Pterodactyls...because phonetically speaking, they would make a mäk(ə)rē of this card) |
That Wagner Harpers Whiskey issue is incredible.

MrReality. I don’t think that card can be topped.
Congratulations on owning that one. |

Speaking of "1 of 1".......I have four T206's that are unique. Plus, a 1904 team card that appears to be unique.
I acquired these "goodies" over the past 30+ years. I have searched for a 2nd. So far, they still remain unique. https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...ZITxSGC30x.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...loveUZITxb.jpg . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...erzogSGC45.jpg . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...UZITx37b_1.jpg The DRUM card of Frank Delahanty in my A - B - C - D connection here is unique. https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...ntyABCDx50.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...tyABCDx50b.jpg And, I'll throw into this mix a T206 proof.....unique, or what ? I have searched for another Puttman proof for many years.... to no avail. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...manPROOFbb.jpg Last, but not least....Buffalo Bisons 1904 Team card, which represents a significant piece of BB history. The Bisons of the Eastern League were considered the "World Champions", as there was no Major League World Series in 1904 (the NY Giants refused to play the Boston Americans). https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...sonsTeam50.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |

I think there are 3 or 4 of the W600s known and a similarly small size handfull of the Toledo Colgans.

But there is a lot of Great Cards that would either top my card or give it a run. This thread has many great and rare cards showing with more to come |
Wouldn't surprise me if there are enough raw examples out there to get over 25, but thus far these two have a combined pop less than 25.

My guess is that there are not 25 known of any specific Pinkerton cabinet.

Type card collectors have an unfair advantage in this thread. I paid less the second time I bought this one LOL

Nice M116. I've got an oddity of my own. Have seen some people suggest they're cut from a poster, but there are at least two Walter Johnson no names known and my card is the same stock as the regular issues:

This 1916 D352 Morehouse Baking of WaJo is a 1 of 1 per the pop reports (no graded examples).
Ethan, please don't take this as a criticism of your post, but all or almost all of the individual cards in very many (if not most) of the pre-War sets have less than 25 examples known to exist. My pre-War favorites are the real-photo, black & white card sets from 1916, 1917 and 1920-22 with a plethora of advertising backs; there are less than 25 examples known of every card in most of these sets. IMHO, for a pre-War card to be considered truly rare there should be less than 5 examples known to exist. |

Yeah, I totally agree. This was the case years back when I put together the E103 Williams Caramel set. I love seeing the 1/1 stuff the most, but in an effort to see more cards I decide to broaden the thread to include 1/1 -- 1/25...great looking stuff so far.

I like Val's idea of 5 or less known.... It would weed the posts down some.

I do imagine duplicates existed at one time. Whether any others survived is the unknown. Both Chickering and Horner used the images they took to provide to teams and family members, as well as for use in publications. They also offered them in their studios for sale to the public. So.... the chances that multiples once existed are pretty good. I once thought that most Horner cabinets were one of one's, now I have seen dupes of many of the players, even the more pedestrian players.

Babe Ruth Pathe Freres. Only 15 have been graded between the two, not including my copy.
1909 Max Stein Ty Cobb. Only 6 graded between the two. 1910 PC796 Cobb/Wagner. Only 14 graded between the two. Joe McGinnity’s 1911 Chicago Cubs Season Pass - the one and only. Dan, I now have 9 of the 12 E222s, but I doubt I'll ever complete this set. Hope all is going well for you. It's interesting how these E222s were issued in different colors and with different back designs: |

When you and Val are finished maybe there will be a find. 50/50 on if that will be before or after pigs fly. Congrats to both you and Val on your acquisitions. I have been stuck at 6 E222s and 2 E221s for a while. |
