Scarce "Type" Cards
I think I will always love scarce type cards...whether from a set or individually known..

I sure wasn't going to hunt this set. Purchased from our humble "peasant/forum owner", 20 some years ago on eBay; when eBay hunting was fun. https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=31324 Galena, IL was our honeymoon place; of course, Mr. Grant is much present there. Still one of the faves of my collection. |

I have many scarce backs, but not too many scarce types, although I think this fits the bill. Are there any other Harper Whiskey cards/players?

Super nice "Team Issue" Leon. Preaching to the choir, I love rare type cards and their stories.

That's just nuts that TT grades a "1," Phil. As I like to put it, the same grade it would get if run over by a tank in the mud. Somehow, the lower end of the grading scale needs to be fixed.

Hopefully this topic will get some attention. Nice cards

Site won’t allow me to post pics, but I have a YouTube channel that I post all my PreWar Type Back cards.
Baltimore Shirts -Kansas City Blues Lots of Mendelssohn type cards. Lots of 1/1 from pop reports.. https://youtube.com/channel/UC4dAXD0zaLB1qcM8yB-j4Tg |

One of three confirmed
Probably from 1915, not 1917. Matty and WaJo are the only others confirmed.

1886 Hancock Clothing. These represent the first minor league cards and the first cards with players info on the back. Three known—each unique.

I remember getting about 5 of these with the Trophy Sticker on them...and was glad to reacquire one.

A little outside the normal definition of a card, but one of my favorites. Wish I could find a copy of the Brown and Mathewson.

If you're gonna go with obscure types you may as well go with the big fella:

My old standbys when it comes to offering up scarce type cards:
R308 Tattoo Orbit Large size of Pepper Martin, shown with its smaller, much more common R308 brother, and a R305 (color) of him as well for size comparison. 1924 Crescent Ice Cream of Goodall, a Canadian ice cream card that is just darn scarce (separate scan from Tattoo Orbit. It is actually 3/8" or so narrower than the R305 Tattoo Orbit color card shown, and about its same height). Brian |

I don't see these very often and just love them. They are very small "cards" and seem to have no uniformity in size when there are several of them next to each other. Almost certainly hand cut.

Scarce "Type" Cards
I acquired this up in Cooperstown
The first "little" World Series was played in 1904. The Buffalo Bisons of the Eastern (International) League beat the St Paul Saints of the American Association. I acquired this very rare composite 31 years ago, while set-up at the Cooperstown HOF weekend Baseball Card Show. A gentleman "walked-in" with it, he was interested in it's trade value. I gave him a fair figure and he traded it to me for a bunch of T206 stars and commons. I have searched for another one since 1990, but to no avail. I am thinking of eventually donating it to the Hall of Fame. It's a significant piece of Baseball history, since No Major League World Series was played in 1904. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...sonsTeam50.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |

I know it isn't baseball but here is a hobby unicorn: the R340 Sport Kings premium of Dempsey, Baer and Carnera using an image from the MGM film The Prizefighter and the Lady. There are two known SK premiums, this one and Weissmuller, with one known example of each.

It's "ONLY" a boxing card, but it's one that my Pa found scouring Flea Markets, Garage Sales, etc.
You NEVER knew what he would come home with because HE never knew what he would come home with! Only one of Paddy Ryan ever graded by PSA! Good Find, Pa - RIP! |
Cool one!

This is one of my favorite threads ever, so great to see these amazing rarities. I have some things on the memorabilia side, and have dealt many more, that are the only copies of an item I've ever seen in many decades of looking for this stuff. A lot of these cards would seem to fall into the same category, and it always begs the question for me: how in the world can there apparently only be one (or several, accounting for items in collections that have never been made public, or that I'm not aware of) of these things? I'd love to know the stories behind them.

Not too many S74 Red Sun baseball players out there. The Tinker is a promo piece for a stage show he did so not really from a set, but I haven't seen another.

During my continuing research to find a second one of these 1904 pieces, I was surprised to find out that there was no Major League World Series played in 1904. John McGraw, and Giants Owner (John T. Brush), refused to play the Boston Americans. There is an excellent book written on this subject by Benton Stark (1991). Quote:

Speaking of:
"I'd love to know the stories behind them". https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=30243 It's also a Sweet Cap 150/25. So, there's that. (interesting "Powers" dating) |

Dang Val, I might have pushed the bidding up on that had I seen it. I don't know that "scarce" is the right word for the Gassler's...but they've certainly proven to be tough to find. I like the simple b&w issues' of the 1920s

You boys sure have some great stuff! A pleasure to see.
The Sylvan Sweets order card would fit the call of the question; the flip books are uncommon but findable, but the order cards, yeah, not so much. Took me a few years and a lucky break at the 2019 National: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...binson%201.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...binson%202.jpg Now this one is modern (1982) but I had never seen one before I added it to my Aaron collection: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0Aaron%201.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0Aaron%202.jpg From a tour of the Korean professional baseball league that Aaron and Ernie Banks (among others) did in 1982. Not sure who made it since I don't read Korean but the mascot looks like a wiener in formal wear. I dunno. |
Definitely some nice stuff being posted. Here's another of mine going through drawers.

1932 Doble Aguila from Venezuela with Tetelo Vargas, hit .471 in 1943. More: https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/juan-tetelo-vargas/ "Tetelo Vargas was a player with exceptional skills in nearly all aspects of the game. He hit for average, had good power for his physique, and was a superb defender. He possessed a strong throwing arm and superior speed – which won him the nickname El Gamo Dominicano, or “The Dominican Deer.” He was an excellent base-stealer as well. His complexion kept him on the wrong side of the major leagues’ color barrier – he was 41 when Jackie Robinson arrived. Yet Vargas accomplished much in more than three decades of professional baseball (1923-1956), a career that took him from his homeland to Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Cuba, Canada and the U.S. Negro Leagues. He is unequivocally recognized as the greatest Dominican player of his era. As Peter Bjarkman, historian of Latin American baseball, wrote, “The slender, wiry outfielder and shortstop. . . is without doubt the most accomplished Dominican native never to spend a single day in the majors.”" |
