Got a nice package back from SGC, and also a few recent raw pickups including the holy grail of Wacky Pack collecting - the 1967 #21 Jolly Mean Giant!!!!

E95 Bill Carrigan
2 Attachment(s)
New type for me. Carrigan is the only catcher in the set, so I'm one and done!
Interesting enough, it came from a Maine dealer who had a variety of Carrigan cards. Carrigan was from Lewiston, Maine. In now resides in my Maine collection. Patrick |

I'm in love with buying these Walter Johnson animal pics. Definitely not going to retire on them in 10 years but something you don't see every day 😆

Pushing the pre-war envelope but I think Big Six qualifies. Fun little pick-up.

Great centering and contrast on that Collins-McCarthy.
This one really caught my eye at Heritage due to its deep color and just overall crispness for the grade. Also at last completes the quartet. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...27d4477e_c.jpg |

Congrats on the Ruth, Matt...a gorgeous copy!
|
Thanks, guys. Chad, that was a good looking 144— bummer you did not reel it in; I had been oh-fer on last several swings myself before last night. Yet the good thing with cards is that constant feeling that the one that is meant to be is right around the corner!
|
Matt, Incredible Goudey Ruth, the red pops, enjoy.
Dan, Awesome Cobb Jim, A lot of nice cards, enjoy Phil, Your definitely not done with just one card for the month, lol |

Now that is a beauty. Congrats! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I was really losing steam on my quest to complete my '33 Goudey set with about 70 cards to go when, much to my surprise and happiness, the REA February auction appeared with a set break right in my grade range that included a number of cards with great eye appeal. Here is my take fresh out of the box from REA today (who are world class and a pleasure to deal with). I may not get the Ruths for a while (or ever), but I feel well on my way now. :)

Something about a raw Goudey. The real way a card should feel.

Matt, nice Ruth!! I love the colors on it.
I was happy to pick this up in Heritage this past weekend. When I first saw it I knew right away that I had to have it |

Seven years ago, you could’ve potentially owned the original photo from which the card was based. The anticipated price was just $200.00 to $400.00 - a bargain today and even in 2014. Wonder what the actual hammer was? https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...udey-card-bid/ |

I was more stoked on The HunchHack then the 35. Something about Babe on the Braves makes me sad.

It has survived time. I also don't think the scans violate copyright. Besides it is free advertising for the seller. Twice over.

Nice Hornsby.
I picked up the other 2 Lajoies Phila and Philadelphia this morning and they are en route. I'd rather have nicer conditions, but I can always upgrade later. These 2 cards get me to 179/185. The Phila example has a name on the top boarder. I will report back with an update to my T213 2-Name thread when I have the card in hand and can magnify it. |

Wonderful stuff, guys. I actually got some to share this month:

Love that Honus W600— the word iconic gets bandied about so much in our hobby, yet it truly applies to that image.
Such a slept on Hornsby card— and Hornsby is tragically slept-on as a player. Wish he had one card that was an "it" card in the hobby. Every time I surf his stats on baseball-reference it makes me want to collect him. Good Lord his numbers are cartoonishly dominant. |

Two very recent pickups. These remind of those "A for awesome, A for affordable" posts that someone here likes to make :)

I'm mostly a postwar guy, but I sold a bunch of Jordan cards during the recent craziness and was able to subsidize an all-time card purchased through the net54 community. For my price range, this represents my ideal card of one of baseball's best:

I’m not familiar with that “Rinky Dink” stamp Ruth.... is there a set called Rinkey Dink out there? The reason I ask is that my father played semi pro baseball back in the late 40’s in mid state coastal Maine for a team called the “East Side Rinky Dinks” and I’d love to add a Rinky Dink card if any HOFer to my collection as a tip to him Any info on that set would be greatly appreciated! One of my favorite 1911 Obaks with terrific colors!
My 4th Colgan's Chips Tin. Patrick |
I was getting tired of watching this card go up and up and up while still not owning one. I knew I'd be priced out of the market very soon, so I picked up this nice looking, lower grade example. Very clean with decent centering for the issue.

Great additions this month so far. Really like the Gehrig and Jarrod man am I jealous, the "39" Williams Play Ball is fast becoming a dream card for me. As you mentioned, get it now but for me it might be too late. Enjoy your latest pickups gentlemen and keep them coming !

Nice Connor - Great looking piece. That is a solid first Cobb!
Love the Butter Cream too, so tough. |
Saturday at our local show I see a single T206 (card on left) in the bottom of the dealers glass case, and I asked to see it. Lew Ritter catcher Kansas City Blues, and dealer say twenty five dollars. When I point out the inked in catchers gear new price ten dollars and I swoop in for the purchase. Some artistic talent right there!

Couple of random pickups for me. Finally decided to sell off some 80’s RC’s and had to get a little something to fill the void.

This came in the mail today. Another step closer to completing my '33 Goudey set! #230 is one of best of the set for my money. I wanted a nice one, but kept coming up short, until now. I never thought I'd end up with a 2, but I'm quite happy with this card. The colors are strong. This is easily one of the nicest 2's in my collection.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...da18dfa733.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...12c13aed67.jpg |
I saw this as a raw card on eBay and recognized that it looked like the lone legit example in the sea of fake/reprint ungraded Ruths. The seller had some other Goudey commons for sale, and after talking to him I felt good about it. Turned out, he'd owned it for 30+ years and when he mailed it to me, it was wrapped like a present. What a nice guy.
Sent it to PSA and it got the grade it deserves. Just arrived back in-hand last night. It's no beauty queen, but still quite presentable for a 1. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d1455777_z.jpg |
