1952 Topps -- Card Gallery
 

I've always wanted to see what other collectors / set builders have out there player by player. This has become increasing difficult to accomplish in person these days. Let's try to post a different 1952 Topps card each day so that we can share / view examples of our graded and non-graded gems. I'll start today off with card #188 Clarence Podbeilan. Let's see your copy! Someone else can pick a different card to share tomorrow.

Was hoping that each day we would focus on one card from the set and post each of our examples. Today woul be #188. Maybe that wasn't clear in my first post.

Not exactly what I was thinking...more of an opportunity to see different examples, grades and variations of each card that are out there. Some of the beautiful commons in this set don't get enough attention in my opinion. But to answer your first question, yes one card from the set per day.

Neat idea Ethan, but the odds of rules being followed in threads like these usually end up as slim and none. Maybe if you went in order, 1-407, with a new card every 2nd day people would be in a better position to know in advance which card to post for those 2 days. Just a thought

You may be right...takes a bit of attention to detail. That said, I have confidence that we can come through. :)

Ha. I was about to post my 52 Campy then I saw the discussion.
IMO doing it in numerical order is the only hope but even then its almost like a whose got the best type deal.

I have a small cache of SGC graded 1952 Topps that I plan on cracking out sometime in the future, with the hopes of them crossing over for the PSA set that I recently started.

Not fun.....but, quite tedious.

We have tried this before with T206 commons (alphabetically) in the pre-WWII section. And it dragged out for months. People lost interest in it.

Net54 guys (for the most part) prefer the freedom to post what cards they have (or desire to). Dictating to them what to post "turns them off".

Anyhow, if you insist on doing this in some sort of numerical order, then break it down by Series (starting with #1 - 80). And following with the
subsequent 5 - Series.

The cards in each Series are randomly posted (number-wise). And, you update the list for each Series as the cards are posted. I did exactly this
for the T206 HOFer's and it worked like a charm....and, the participants really enjoyed this method.

Series #2......81 - 130

Series #3.....131 - 190

Series #4.....191 - 250

Series #5.....251 - 310

Series #6.....311 - 407

Sounds like fun. I completed my set a long time ago so I haven't looked at most of the cards in quite a while. My set is probably G to VG. Here's my Podbielan. Some creases and not great centering.

Like the previous poster, I haven't seen Bud in quite a while. Some rough corners but he looks pretty good.

So, the suggestion was made yesterday that we post our cards in numeric order in an effort to simplify things. This will also allow people to know what card will be posted the following day. So today will be #1 Pafko...tomorrow will be card #2 Runnels...so on and so forth. Great cards so far...thanks for sharing!

Yours has top left and right corner pulls as well. It surprises me how many 52 have these.

I'm jealous of the centering on those Lenhardts, guys. Here's my red back.

One of my Lenhardts has decent centering, the other not so much.

The cards aren't great but I always liked that Red Sox logo.

I wouldn't mind trying to find a nicer example, but still like this one.

I guess I never really looked at the cards that closely before, but there is definitely a consistent, noticeable difference in the coloring of the pictures between the red back and the black back card.

If I read/understood it correctly, that is the number one reason why Sy Berger changed the first print run to white/red backs as he said the black backs made the fronts of the cards too dark. Some are definitely darker/worse than others but yes, there is a definite difference.

Although this article doesn't specifically say Sy changed the back colors, in another article I read, that I can't currently find, it read that he did.

I also know I read a few articles, likely around 4-5 yrs ago, that read that black backs were more rare/more valuable than red backs but the general consensus with members on this site say that is not true.
I know some black back cards are way tougher than some red backed cards (pop report) so those will command a premium in high grade but I guess that is as far as it goes?

"Existing in both black-back and red-back variations, it’s apparent that the red-back cards consistently offer superior picture quality, leading to speculation that Topps was not happy with their first attempt and resolved to make improvements by increasing the quality while changing the reverse color to red as a sort of “clean slate” approach. The Johnny Sain and Joe Page “wrong back” errors (#48 and #49) exist only in black-back form as they were corrected before the switch to red; only the correct version exists on the red-back variety. All cards after the first series are in red-back form only. High grade specimens of the black-back cards are almost always scarcer then their corresponding red-backs, suggesting that the switch from black to red happened fairly early in the process and considerably fewer black-backs made it into circulation.

From the PSA price guide website (see below), it actually says the red backs sell for a premium, but in the SCD, it says black backs used to sell for a premium but now they are basically the same so who knows what to believe.

Notes about 1952 Topps
First series 1-80 Red Back variations usually sell for approx. 15-20% more than the listed price

I can't help but think that is a typo where they meant to type/write black instead?
With little, or next to nothing, written about print runs, it's highly unlikely we'll ever know what the black to red back printing ratio ever was? Like what I wrote above, I think, once upon a time, that black backs were slightly more expensive/viewed as more rare, but through the years, as more info likely came forward, that is no longer the case? :confused:

I read that he had just had his seventh child when the picture was taken.

Supposedly Jansen's arm was shot in his mid 30s after a few great seasons (over a five year period), but I'm wondering if his legs gave out instead w/ all those reproductive bedroom appearances

If I average my 2 out, they would be almost perfectly centered, at least on the fronts.

Saving scan time by posting a black back and a red front of Grady Edgebert Hatton, Jr., as I'm sure his mother called him.

Anyone have any 52 wrappers? Thought I'd add mine in now with Wayne as I'm not sure where it would actually fit in with this thread?

On the subject of Wrappers, I noticed this came up in a prior thread, is there a reliable way to purchase them? I've heard that people make counterfeit wrappers as well, so I would love to purchase a legitimate one. I'd assume one of the big companies slabs them.

Here is my RB Terwilliger and wrapper artwork I recreated to have something to store with my set. I'll eventually get the real thing but this will have to do for now.

I know this has been brought up before, and just recently, but I honestly don't know anything other than to tell you to make sure you purchase from a reliable source.
