Gene Hackman .....right before he coached at Hickory. Seriously it does look like him, but it's not.

Lol When I saw this on ebay I laughed out loud. Then I was strangely annoyed all day.

Aquarian Sports Cards 11-10-2020 05:11 PM

Why is there a photo montage of Babe Ruth pictures surrounding young Gru from Despicable Me?

1000% it looks like Manning

ThomasL 11-10-2020 06:58 PM

Im not very confident in it but my first thought is it looks a little like Frank Shellenback

JollyElm 11-10-2020 07:03 PM

A Peyton Manning/Ty Cobb love child?

riggs336 11-10-2020 07:06 PM

The prop man from "8 Heads in a Dufflebag"?

Isn't it Shoeless Joe?

Does anyone still even remember that joke?:rolleyes:

Here is a photo of a younger Frank Shellenback. My keen eye on ears says Frank it is not, but I have to admit it does look like him.

LOL

Yep, I remember. The Bruces, Seinfeld references, and Shoeless Joe “sightings.” Good times.

A young Fred Merkle?

I’m getting deja vu with that image as well. For some reason I’m remembering the person later was an mlb umpire but I could be way off. But I have seen that same photo somewhere.

Aquarian Sports Cards 11-11-2020 11:07 AM

Thanks Dennis that makes me feel at least a little better. I have the feeling he was a heralded rookie arriving at the park for the first time. A set up shot for a newspaper.

chalupacollects 11-11-2020 01:03 PM

I was thinking a young Oscar Madison right after he was asked to leave...that request made by his wife.

usernamealreadytaken 11-11-2020 02:35 PM

Joe Connolly?

Kris19 11-11-2020 06:41 PM

Max Carey maybe?

Jason19th 11-11-2020 06:50 PM

I am NOT getting political here but it it possible that this image is familiar because the guy looks like the kid in the MAGA hat who had the incident with the native American group. It’s certainly an image we all saw a lot

cdn_collector 11-11-2020 07:42 PM

Anyone else seeing Jack Bastian's T206 here?

Regards,

Richard.

T206Collector 11-11-2020 08:27 PM

Except for maybe the cap, and what appear to be stands in the background, I don’t really see a baseball player here.

Looks like a doctor, in a suit and overcoat carrying a medical bag to me.

Aquarian Sports Cards 11-11-2020 08:28 PM

It doesn't look LIKE someone I think I recognize. I recognize THIS image. I have seen this exact picture somewhere before.

Awfully young to be a doctor and that bag is awfully big.

Umpire? Trainer? Not a lot of pics of players dressed like that on a ball field.

I think we are getting closer!

Brian (card way too nice to be mine)

Not seeing the Bastian thing other than it's a guy in a coat.

And a hat ;)

But I do agree with you. When I look at T206s and their original images, they are often quite accurate (even after the artist takes some creative license). If I give this photo/card that treatment there are a lot of differences before you even get into comparing specific facial features.

Consider the location of his ear, for example. In the photo, his ear rises above the bottom of the hat. In the card, the ear doesn't make it to the bottom of the hat, and more hair is visible.

Anyway, the photo still does make me think of that specific T206, but I sure don't think they are the same guy.

Richard.

If You have it available...
i'd take it out to see if there's any evidence, clues, etc...

Aquarian Sports Cards 11-17-2020 02:52 PM

I do but still haven't heard back from the consignor to get permission. Hall of Fame couldn't identify it though they agree it is likely a baseball player.

CobbSpikedMe 11-17-2020 05:03 PM

Scott, sorry to kill this thread if that's what I do here, but...

The thread title reminds me of this joke.

A pirate walks into a bar.
The bartender asks him, "why do you have a wheel in your pants?"
The pirate says, "Arrr, it's drivin' me nuts!"

Sorry.

Aquarian Sports Cards 11-08-2021 05:40 AM

You did lol, but I am bringing it back to life. Since another photo ID thread won't seem to just die even though he's TELLING us who it is so I'm not even sure of the point of that one.

Hints of a young Mike Trout (the OP's photo).

jthorst75 11-08-2021 06:46 AM

Wow I remember this thread and I also remember thinking then it was a young Branch Rickey. I'm still sticking to that...

butchie_t 11-08-2021 06:54 AM

You really want a coat like that......don't you? That is why it is driving you cray-cray.

It is a pretty awesome coat.

Tao_Moko 11-08-2021 08:41 AM

I'm with you on the familiarity aspect. Same as above and recall an umpire image like this.

edited to add: Not Billy Evans, but similar to. The plaid coat and that bag are not consistent with an umpire's gear that I'm familiar with. Appear to be street clothes, but maybe the shape of the duffle bag might help identify the sport/person. I suppose the question is whether or not it's actually baseball related. Perhaps polo?

Exhibitman 11-08-2021 11:24 AM

I have no idea who it is but this sort of stuff is part of what makes collecting fun.

That coat...to paraphrase Al Czervik: "Geez, that's the worst looking coat I've ever seen. You buy a coat like that you oughta get a bowl of soup...but on you it looks good."

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20czervik.jpg

My favorite one like this was a cabinet card listed for sale as a boxer's photo with nothing more:

https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20Cabinet.jpg

It is lightweight champ and HOFer Benny Leonard in a ca. 1920 mounted photo.

Just feel he's way too young to be an ump.

horzverti 11-09-2021 02:05 PM

Every time I look at this image I see a very young Bob Shawkey. No idea if it is him, but that is who I see.
