REA Pickups

1 Attachment(s)
Went after a few others but ultimately ended up with only this one. What did everyone else get?

Arazi4442 08-17-2020 06:46 AM

I thought I put in strong bids on three different items but ended up with zilch.

Congrats to all those who won.

Shoeless Moe 08-17-2020 06:49 AM

Here's how above the rest REA is

I sent them an email an hour before midnight, asking for more pix of an item and saying no worries whatsoever if it's too late and you can't get them for me, my fault for asking so late.

5-7 mins later, 6 additional images of the item.

Placed my bid, took over the lead and won it, with that bid!

Now 1. It was great for me, allowed me to better make my decision. 2. Great for REA they continue to show their superior customer service. 3. Great for the consignor who gets more money because of my bid.

They easily could have said "really, now you ask for pix with an hour left in extended bidding, sorry pal."

Actually put it what I thought were 2 bids higher than expected price and still lost all 3.

Nice pickup on the Johnson! I got shut out this time around. Congratulations to everyone who picked something up!

T_Hamilton 08-17-2020 07:26 AM

Struck out as well... man those prices were crazy last night. Will be interesting to look back in a few years and see if I will kick myself for not going higher, or happy I didnt.

That said, if anyone has a 1954 Hank Aaron PSA 5 they are looking to sell for around $5K or a T206 Red Cobb in PSA 1.5-2 for around $2.5k, please message me.

Thanks,

Taylor

I as well. I was the direct underbidder on one lot, which I could have went one more on, but there really was no value there as is.......If someone got anything way undervalued, congrats......I sure didn't see it.

I "think" what I won was "slightly" undervalued.

I won the actual 1929 American League game ball for less the retail version sold for.

Like if you had a game used bat vs a retail bat the value would NEVER be higher on the retail. So found it odd that the Retail Ball went higher than an actual Game ball. I've owned both before and it's not particularly more rare. I'd say the game one in mint/near mint is equal or more rare, if anything.

That was the other thing, the Retail while the stampings were as bold if not a hair better, but had a few flaws, if you zoom in on the laces you will see the difference, browning or scuffed, wheras none of that on the gamer, and a pin hole in the retail version as well.

Gamer - sold for 1,020
https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=69807

Retail - sold for 1,080
https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=69808

I bid on both, and neither went for what you'd say is a steal, both went for about where they should and have been going, a little less then the gamer would go for on Ebay. More ball collectors I feel on Ebay then visit any single auction house. Possibly just someone out there who didn't know the RED is for the retail version, or they just really wanted a retail version.

Great PC Leon -- I was watching that one. I really like it. Congrats

By 10pm, I could not keep my eyes open (not a knock on REA, I was just exhausted). There were several other items I wanted and would have bid on if I could have stayed awake, but since there was only one item I had to have: I placed a very high, top-all bid on this and went to bed. Super psyched to have such an early image of Wagner - 3+ years before his W600 Type 1 and E107 pieces.

Same here, I actually put in a few more bids than I intended on a couple signed Mantled late. I think someone else decided they were worth a lot more than I or anyone else did. I was almost instantly (not an auto bid) out bid every time.

REA Pickups

I bid what I thought were competitive amounts on 4 baseball lots and got trounced soundly.

I bid heavily and above retail on several non-sports lots. I was leading up to 2 days ago. When I checked last night my bids looked laughable after seeing what the lots went for.

The catalog was great to have and I enjoyed paging through it many times. I found some lots there that I missed initially in my first 5 or 6 looks at the auction.

I am pretty sure, when I get ready to sell my collection or have my wife sell it after I'm gone that I'll be using these folks.

packs 08-17-2020 09:04 AM

I didn't win the REA lot, but was very happy to see the sale price on the DiMaggio streak photo. I have one as well.

Ruth Photos

5 Attachment(s)
I thought I got a fairly good deal on 5 different Babe Ruth Photos

PSA Type III Babe Bows Out - never going to have a Type 1 so this c1948 will suffice :)

4 separate Type 1's from War benefit against Johnson and also got a ticket stub included - if anyone is interested in that let me know!

all for $1000. I'll be moving some of the "they are cool but don't need to keep" and hopefully recoup some of the costs

I struck out kinda like Casey at the bat....I was watching the action on that Patterson Cobb you must have hung in there late to get that one! I was out at $1550....also whiffed on the T207 Johnson cause I fell asleep at the wheel and got my bid in at 12:12 which was 2 minutes late grrrrrr that is one sharp card! Also loved the Johnson PC pictured above UNDER Graded I think for how well it presents. Congrats to all the winners!!!

Nice pick-ups, everyone. Being primarily a card collector, I'm partial to the PC796 of WaJo and the V89 of Cobb - great cards! I am pleased to have won this card for my 1924 Senators collection for less than I was expecting to have to pay:

Didn't bid myself, but they were gorgeous. Kudos to whoever landed them.

paul 08-17-2020 01:29 PM

Congrats Chris on the V89 Cobb. I was the underbidder and wanted it badly, but I guess you wanted it more. Heritage has an Ex-Mt example coming up in their next auction. If you want to upgrade, I'd be happy to take the REA one off your hands.

My one win. REA assumed it was from 1950 which I think is correct based on the players and date (the date and day of the week match up, and Campy had his own tours later on).

It's not much to look at, but Jackie barnstorming tour items are really tough, and I'm a sucker for anything connected to them. Plus having Jackie, Doby, Campanella, Newcombe and King Tut on it is pretty awesome.

And since it's REA, (which is not too far from me, they take Zelle and they are awesome) I got tracking saying it should arrive tomorrow :-)

I was "in" on the ones that finished with a flurry of bidding. Of course the fourth one finished with far less activity, and I was not "in" on that one. So I came away with none.

Congrats to anyone who landed one (or more). All 4 were spectacular.

There were a lot of great cards available last night, but to me, an all original GU flannel is something that is truly scarce and a great buy for the money. This year I've gotten a 1968 home Giants Nate Oliver (Huggins & Scott), a 1957 home Pirates Ron Kline (Hunt), a 1965 road Twins Zoilo Versalles (Heritage), a 1968 road Pirates Maury Wills (Lelands) and now this one. Would love the 1967 Tigers Mickey Stanley at Heritage but it's already north of $2k.

h2oya311 08-17-2020 05:09 PM

shut out last night. oh well.

Ryan / Jeff - regarding the c1900 Pittsburg Imperial Cabinet w/ Wagner and Waddell, REA didn't mention Fred Clarke being in the image. Is he? If he's not, why not? Seems odd, don't you think?

Bicem 08-17-2020 05:22 PM

Believe that's him in the suit as player/manager/pimp.

Derek, I do not know if Clarke is in the pic - I will defer to Jeff and hope that the pimp in the upper row is him. Also, I dont think Waddell is in the picture. Here is what REA says:

"including Hall of Famers Honus Wagner and Jack Chesbro, along with stars Deacon Phillippe, Tommy Leach, Jess Tannehill, and Sam Leever. "

Bicem 08-17-2020 05:55 PM

REA probably just missed it, but I'm pretty confident that's him.

Lucky for you no Waddell, would have cost you 3x what you paid. Lucky for me too, I would have lost and bitched about it forever.

Lucky for us both!! Wagner was the only "W" I was after and the only HOFer, but its cool to get Pimp Clarke and Chesbro too

I was the consignor on this card and I think you got a hell of a deal.
Paid more for it 10 years ago than you just did, and back then it seemed like prices would only rise.
Not sure what's happened in the intervening years of if Mikan is just too far back for todays basketball collectors to want to collect.
Enjoy it for me, it was one of the tough ones for me to let go.;)

Really nice Matty!

My eyes are very misty

As I pen these lines to Christy;

O, my heart is full of heaviness

May the flowers ne'er wither, Matty

Congrats on some great looking wins everyone!

I was ready to spend last night and still got bullied around. Was bidding on a couple Mono cards, but got pushed out. Also wanted the 9 t205 HOF lot, thought I had it at a great price until a late bidder put in a big overbid. At least I got these two Contentnea cards to add to my small but growing collection.

Brian, there is no excuse for the extra 14 minutes- one hour is max for a reply the day after a massive auction ends :)

REA, hands down, has the best customer service in the biz, and Brian and the whole crew at REA are class acts. I am sure it will all work out. Great auction Brian.

I can't top the Brian love posts though he's as swell a guy as you'd want to deal with in the industry, but I can refer to shipping costs on framed items.
I had to send a framed item through the mail UPS and it cost me $270 a few months back including the insurance....so your estimate was not far from the mark.
REA don't do sly, so when they tell you something about their service you can take it to the bank!

Nice! Watch out, though -- I've heard once you get your first one there's no turning back. ;)

Jeff, very cool piece, even if it is a simple design. Reflects the times and event, and I thought you might go after it.
I won a couple of items and paid right away but haven't received any notice about shipping. It's been a while since I bought anything from REA. Do they usually send a notice when they ship?

I've always loved the Glendales. I think the Ginsberg is just as tough as the Houtteman. But I've always read that the Houtteman is the key card.
