REA Results
So both lots I was interested in went out past my budget. Hopefully, you all had better luck than myself. Kudos to REA for the terrific auction.
If anyone picked up lot #90 or #91, please let me know if you're interested in parting with any of the Des Moines or Sioux City cards. Thanks and Goodnight Craig |
Lost all of mine
The economy seems to be thriving in sports cards and memorabilia - Wow! Not just REA, but I think 4-5 auctions over the past few weeks.
|
Yep... I've noticed the same thing in a big way. Cards and memorabilia might be the last segment to take a hit from this covid craziness.

I guess I'll be the first to post some winnings. Both in the category of cards I never thought I'd own. The McGraw is the oversized premium Ferguson pennant, not the little BF2.
|
Wow NICE! Those larger Premium Pennants are so rare... Great stuff!

One of the auction results that really jumped out at me was the '61-62 autographed Wilt Chamberlain card. I know there at several collectors trying to put together an autographed set of the '61-62 Fleers, but $33,000+ for the Wilt card seemed really strong to me. https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=66883 |
I won a couple of lots. Got one for an entirely reasonable price and the other for at least twice what I expected I'd have to pay for it. I thought for sure I was the only Whitey Glazner collector.

Congrats on the Wagner. I missed that one, might have bid you up if I had seen it.
Ended up going higher for this than I planned but wanted a nice Cy young card. |

My thoughts on the items I was watching/bidding on
1) 1933 Bismarck Team-Signed Postcard with Satchel Paige PSA/DNA NM-MT 8 - The 1933 Bismarck Churchills signed postcard was nice and fit my integration collection, but that team only had a couple of big names (Paige being the key one) so I passed, even though it's one of the earliest Paige autographs I have ever seen. Ended up passing on it. Sold for $975 + Premium (and shipping and tax), so prob around $1400 all in. 2) 1940-1941 Pedro "Perucho" Cepeda Signed Guayama Puerto Rican League Contract - I sold this a year or two ago and it went for $1100 + Premium then. Would have loved to have gotten it back if it stayed really cheap. Ended up $700 + Premium. Solid price, but wasn't low enough for me to keep bidding on. 3) 1945-1946 Cienfuegos Original Photograph with Martin Dihigo - PSA/DNA Type I - I noticed this had only 1 bid (for $200) at a few minutes to 6, so I went in. It's a beautiful image in great shape. A much worse condition copy sold at Hakes for $800+ (with the juice). Bidding got up to $550 on it early in extended bidding and I planned on bidding in the overtime. Ended up looking myself in the mirror and reminding myself that it doesn't really fit the PC super well, and so even though I think it was a very solid deal at $550 + Premium (or even at $600 or higher, as it was still below what a much, much worse condition copy sold for at Hakes), I ended up leaving it. Sorry to the buyer who paid much more than had I stayed away, but I believe they still got a very nice price. 4) 1933 Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia A's Lineup Cards Signed by Walter Johnson and Connie Mack - The only items I won. Price was definitely not low ($1250 + premium etc) but it's the oldest pair of lineup cards (meaning both teams from the same game) I've ever seen in years of collecting and researching them. It featured manager's Walter Johnson against Connie Mack, two of the most significant names in the game (albeit Johnson for his play.) In rare fashion, Mack signed his whole name (first and last rather than just last). The date wasn't listed, but wasn't terribly hard to determine (Aug 17, 1933). In the game, HOF Earl Averill hit for the cycle. HOF's Jimmie Foxx and Mickey Cochrane were in the lineup for the A's as well. Monte Pearson, who was on the mound for Cleveland, actually lead the league in ERA that season. The A's lineup is someone faded which isn't great, but the Indians is super sharp with Johnson's signature looking really sharp. And the Averill's cycle was the 104th in baseball history. (There still have only ever been 330. (It's only slughtly more common than the 303 no-hitters in baseball history). And the A's pitcher that day had a great name/nickname: (Merritt Patrick) "Sugar" Cain" |
To many good items

The REA auction had a lot of great items unfortunately not enough resources for them all.
Happy to get this Joe Jackson |

Tim Murnane day for me. The 1877 Boston composite cabinet with Tim Murnane, and WaJo's personal photo from the Tim Murnane tribute game with the lineup written out by Johnson personally.

Some nice stuff already posted from winnings here. My lone pickup.

I was shut out but there were a couple of lots that I had my eye on for information purposes.
839 - the autographed Ted Williams rookie had an opening bid of $500 (me!) and sold for $19,500. It was only Authentic and the card didn't have a number grade but it was a very sharp looking card. Given the starting bid, I was surprised that it sold for nearly 40x the opening bid. 1158 was the 1956 Topps set that had all 342 cards in PSA 6 holders. It started at $2500 and eventually sold for $11,000. It spend several days in the $3,000-$4,000 range. The grading alone even at $7 a card was well over $2,000. I have all of the HOFers, both checklists and several other cards at least PSA 6 so I was interested in this one for value as, obviously, the HOFers drive most of the cost. It really made a late run. Maybe it was me, but I didn't see anything resembling a deal in the stuff that I was looking at. Lot 2263 was '71 & '72 topps basketball sets that I was interested in. When I read the description further, it said that there was writing on 70% of the card backs and it still went for $1350 before buyer's premium. When the auction started, I wondered if there would be softness as people would be hoarding cash to get through this crisis. Apparently, there are very wealthy collectors who are impervious to the challenges gripping the world. |

I don't know whether to be happy or sad. I placed an early bid but a week ago last night we were hit by a big storm with straight line winds. I lost 13 70 feet plus trees in five seconds in my front yard and then have had to take down five more with heavy damage. We didn't get power back until Wednesday night, my mind has just been other places so I didn't bid anymore. But grateful the house survived and no one was hurt.

Great pick up Jeff- what happened to your old 1914 Jax?
I thought prices were strong but the W600 Cobb went very cheap. I landed a few white whales and am all around super-psyched about last night. |
Wow. Awesome. Congrats.

As a consignor I was EXTREMELY HAPPY with the results!

Thanks guys. Getting blanked in Heritage did give me some added “auction muscles”, but DJ, I will be competing in the next Heritage. This auction just had a few things I really wanted and you never really see - the W600 Wagner, the tango eggs Cobb and Clement Bros Cobb. There were a few that got away (e92 crofts cobb and WW Smith Cobb), but I can’t complain.
I thought this was a really great auction. My only complaint is 5 minutes; I’d like to see that go to 10-15 Hi Ed! How is “stay at home” in the new house? I always look at Ruth, but they are just so darn expensive and, for me, Cobb and/or Wagner usually wins; more bc of the issue (T, E, D cards and colors) Than the player. |
My small pickups:
Have been wondering for a while if any Type 1 photos even existed of Faust. Have been looking since I got back into collecting 7 or 8 years ago and haven't seen one come up unless I missed it. So I am very happy to have landed one at what I feel was a very reasonable price. The fact that it is a Paul Thompson is just icing on the cake. https://i792.photobucket.com/albums/...pszgirorol.jpg With my turn towards vintage film posters and collectibles, these next two are right up my alley. This one was originally titled "Abbott and Costello Meet The Killers". As A&C movies go, it is somewhat forgettable in the labyrinth of their films. What ended up making the title rather collectible, however, was that five days before shooting on the film began, they were able to sign someone new to play the role of the lead villain, and his star power at the time was so great that they put his name in the title of the film. It became "Abbott and Costello Meet The Killer Boris Karloff. The part was originally written for a woman. Paper from this title is collectible mostly due to Karloff's work in the film. The fact that it is Bud Abbott's personal script for the film is amazing. https://i792.photobucket.com/albums/...pstdd5pxke.jpg This was my favorite get from the auction though. Bud Abbott's personal script from the movie that basically launched the Abbott and Costello franchise. It was their second film but the one that made them stars. There might only be two other A&C titles that compare in terms of collectability. Just an amazing piece. https://i792.photobucket.com/albums/...pskj7kgycp.jpg |
Unbelievable Ryan. And just to throw it out there...if you're looking to adopt...consider a middle aged man in his 40's with limited upside at this point..I could be had. Christmas could certainly be mighty special. :D

The price for the Wilt was very surprising! That might be the most I can recall ever seeing for any vintage signed Basketball card.

ok - i'll play...guess i'm in the way shallow end (especially after Hotchkiss, good grief man!) but i'm pretty pleased with these.
https://i.imgur.com/7dzHvcml.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/evmZN8Vl.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/BpmNvo7l.jpg For Wajo portraits, if you want something OTHER than Piedmont or Sweet Cap, this is really the only reasonable thing to find; eye appeal is pretty good, and with the "common backs" getting $1200-1300 normally, the back premium on this seemed pretty reasonable. For Matty, it was this SC150/30 or the PSA 4 Piedmont 150. 20% off the PSA seemed like a good place to be. On Young, similar to Wajo, if you want something else Sovereign is about it. And of those, 150s are twice as hard (?) to find then 350s? At $1400-1500 for the common back 2.5s, again back premium seemed pretty reasonable. |
I was the underbidder on the Ruth/Cobb/Collins type 1 photo - couldn't bring myself last night to pay up and just overpay; huge regrets this morning.
Thrilled to see the '39 signed Williams sell for that - great card |

Nice cards, everyone. I enjoyed this closing style for REA. I picked up a couple, but this is my favorite.
(Edited to add: it's a shame there's so much compression on uploaded jpgs...the full picture is much nicer: https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=65212) |
This is gonna be small taters to most of you all here, but I'm super happy with my lone pickup from REA last night. It is an Allen & Ginter album. I already have the baseball set, so this album tells "the rest of the story" when it comes to its history. Everything about it makes me melt! I love 19th century lithograph pieces, and the graphics on this are amazing. Plus, I think I got it for a really good price!
http://mycollectionofcards.com/baseb...interalbum.jpg |
It's a very nice album
and you paid a fair price. Do you plan on framing it? Minor cover and binding hole damage makes it an excellent candidate. I won one of the banners, the stevengraphs, and an album (unfortunately damaged) I needed but it's also non-sports so I won't mention ladies of the white house :-)
BTW I put my check in the mail today and expecting my lots some time this afternoon :-) |
Picked up a couple goodies. I was baffled on the 93 SP case. It breaks down to over $6k / box and they can be had for $3k all day on ebay. I get it's cool to own a case, but paying a 200% premium for it surprises me. Lots of strong prices.

Nice Matty Steve. Congrats
Thanks for compliments all. |
Congrats to all!

Nice pick ups for all! Ryan - Wow! Just wow! |
Great pickups everyone! Love the Matty Steve! Amazing stuff Ryan!

Congrats to all who won last night. Incredible auction and many highlights came to board members! Ive seen 10 images posted on this thread so far that would be headliners in most other auctions. Whoever won the W600 Cobb got a great price on it and speaking of great price.... Jay did good on that Murnane photo from Walter Johnson family. That lot still had some meat in the bone! Ryan it was a three way race on the WW Smith Cobb as we get honorable mention. Ryan, Im almost afraid to ask you to rate your pickups.
As far as REA new closing.. I think 10 minutes per lot for extended time compared to 5 minutes is better. Plus starting at 11pm is better than midnight would be nice to see. However all n all, great job in changing to allow fierce competition at the end. It was fun to watch and I couldn't even think straight while making my bids. Maybe they could add another auction to the calander year to!!! |
Most important note we overlooked here:
There was no glitch or hold and the auction DID end. YAY!!!!! |

I consigned a few items and made about a twenty percent profit over what I paid, which given the state of the economy I can't complain about. I used a portion of my winnings on this nice Houdini signed letter, which will display really well in my home bar. I hope everyone is staying safe and well.

I picked up two T210's I have wanted for a few years. The Pepe Upside down split back and the Thebo for its yellowish borders. REA had it listed as orange. The Kelly Mascot did well IMO. I was a low under bidder on a potential 3rd Yum Yum. That one got pricey. Great auction as always!

I'm really happy about the card I won last night...only way that I could afford it was if it had a hole in it!
|
Quote:
i know some people may not like this idea, but as long as it was all done transparently...if you had any custom card skills to "repair" these and fill in the holes, i think you could send them back for A treatment (or even restored label) and come out really well regardless, still a cool card as it sits and much more affordable this way |

Picked up the two Norfolk Jewels cabinets, bringing my collection up to 5 (of the original 12, I believe). |

I flipped my original Jackson’s to move up on some cards. Now I wanted to get 1 back and this 1914 CJ Jackson 2MK has a nice eye appeal and a good price. Now I have 4 cards to my collection and slowly and strategically growing it Many great items for auction And many great collectors and winners Jeff |

Jeff, that is a great collection of OJ HOFers. Are you going for the full run? Jay pointed out the 1890 Wright, nice bonus. I also like the clean looking Ewing from 1888. I took interest in the 1888 example of Mack, you just don't see those very often but I can't afford to start branching out to non-Detroits.
I was happy to add to the Tomlinson collection . . . Shindle in street clothes. https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=28249 |

First let me complement many here on fantastic pickups. The W600 Wagner, Clement Cobb, the run of OJ Hall of Famers , Ginter Album, lineup cards signed by Mack and Johnson, "The" Tango eggs Cobb.. All great stuff.
My 2 pickups First 1910 WS stub (AL) m. And second 1923 Giants silver Season pass. I hope I am not wrong about it but under the tarnish it looks like a very nice example. I was close on a number of scorecards and missed on the 1904 Highlanders because 5 minutes was just not enough time to update my bids. So I agree with those that suggest 10 minutes. Many rare cards and I thought the Fleischman bread Matty and Cobb were nice and reasonably priced. As were the large Ferguson pennants the Mcgraw was a very nice example. |
1967 Topps 1st series cello box. 48 packs sold for $102,000. A quick story. Back in the mid 80's I was at the huge antiques market in Brimfield, Mass. Had already bought some things and was looking for more. I walked around the corner of a building and there was a seller strait where I was headed. Getting close to the table I spotted a cello box. Ran right over to see what it was. Yes, it was a 1967 cello box. priced at $5.00 per pack. I offered the guy $200 for it and he took it. Went home that night cleaned up and hit the hay. Next day I started looking through the box of packs. I then realized that all the card numbers on the back of the packs were under 200. WOW, Mantles I thought. Well Mantle was about the hottest thing at the time so I started opening the packs. Found 2 mantles in the 1 thru 98 packs. I sold the rest at a show. The 2 mantles graded in later years graded 8's. I still have one. Total amount I will end up with after I sell the Mantle I still have, will be somewhere around 2100 to 2500 when I sell it. One of my better deals. ARRRRFFFF. Frank

I also picked up a few OJs. Loving the contrast/clarity on them for sure! I can't begin to tell you how hard it is to find a nice Griffith that doesn't have a faded image.
Incredible haul for you, Jeff. And JayCee, Ryan...Wow! |
Those are beauties Derek. Are you working on the HOF set or just rookie cards? BTW, that Griffith is Exhibit A for the idiocy of grading Old Judges.
|
Awesome pick ups Jeff, Jay and Derek. Congrats. I don’t collect pre 1900 (yet), but those pics look awfully appetizing.
|
Quote:
I have to say that the Griffith will probably measure a bit thinner than most of my other OJs, but I can't complain. I would have still been a buyer if it had received an "A". But Jay, I think you are suggesting that, if not for the back damage to this particular card, it should have been given a "5" or higher... As Yoda once said: "Grades matter not. Judge me by my grades do you?" |
Since Old Judges were hand cut, they come in all sizes and shapes. I was talking about the image which is superb.
|
Incredible
Incredible gets guys...Ryan love those Cobbs and Wagners...Ed, I did used to own that Tango Cobb...looking at the prices for the E106 HOFers I wish I had dived in...Jerry

I was shut out, but really loving seeing everyone's "wins"...
Brian, I think the Lou Gertenrich is now my all time favorite back... fantastic. Jesse, great E90-1 Young. Beautiful example of one of my favorite cards. Ryan... I love the Red Sox/Ruth postcard... along with everything else you got. Simply amazing. David, great trio of T206 HOFers. Love the bold/vivid color on all three. Jeff, the contrast on those OJs...wow. Amazing image quality. Thanks for sharing, everyone! |
