" What is certain is that Speaker was a breathtaking outfielder, maybe the first such creature in the American League. He played center field the way he lived — aggressively, dangerously, boldly. Speaker would play so absurdly shallow that baseball writers in the day would sometimes call him a fifth infielder. "
From The Athletic's profile on their #18 player of all time, Tris Speaker. |

I love me some Speaker - will stick to a few I haven't shown much in the past...

Some great Speaker cards there, Jeff!

Great thread! My next purchase I am looking to purchase the Speaker T206, CJ, or candy card.
The Speaker autograph was bought during the last recession. The Sporting News supplement reard bought here from a board member. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk |

The Gray Eagle...nice choice. People tend to forget how elite a player he was. My modest contribution:

Tris Speaker 1934 United Kingdom Card

R&J Hill 1934. I believe this image is from an earlier tour of Japan. The same image appears on a Cuban issue which escapes my memory at this moment. There is something noteworthy about the lines on the field that was pointed out to me years ago. Memory again...I think it had to do with the venue being a soccer field.

This is a clip from a 1909 Red Sox panoramic I have - I believe this is Speaker at the far left end - does that look right to folks?
|
Quote:
I want to take a picture of the photo over my fireplace and post it. Seems Joe Wood & Tris Speaker did the trick of running while the panoramic was being taken and they appear twice in the line! I love that! That must be a heck of an '09 pano you got there! Can you share the whole thing, perhaps? Thank you! Phil |

In the meantime, here is the Red Sox team portion of the panorama - I have it pinpointed to a mid-June 1909 series in which Speaker played in all of the games, so he should be in one of these shots. Which one is he?? |
To me that does look like him on the far left, and the stance of that player seems to fit Tris...not sure why.

One more vote for the player on the left to be Speaker. My eye was drawn right to him.
Some of my Tris Speaker cards etc. Third from left in Red Sox team photo. Lousy jpeg. Other photo from Hunt Auctions. Not much info other than with BoSox against New York at the Polo Grounds in the 1910s. |
Yep. when you look at all of 'em, the far left HAS to be him. None of the others are of any likeness.

From Helmar Brewing. A difficult modern art card to locate. The series is retired and collectors don't sell them. You've gotta be a stalker to find it. One of my favorite Speakers |
