Beautiful T204. One of my favorite image of Johnson. Doe anyone know what year this photo was taken? I have always assumed that it is a 1907 or 1908 road uniform, but the absence of the "Washington" makes me wonder. Maybe the lettering was blacked out during editing?

Val, it actually has one of the strongest images of Johnson on his T204 that I have seen, nearly all have a somewhat washed out look, not yours!

Scott, thanks for your kind words and for observing a redeeming virtue for my T204 WaJo. Frankly, I had never noticed/realized this before, but I'll remember this when the day comes that I sell it because I'm too old to collect any longer.

Jay, it's unclear to me what you mean by your comment. Sure, the 1917 WaJo blank back is scarcer than all of the different ad backs added together. However, per the pop reports (for whatever they are worth), the Merchants Bakery and the D350-2 Standard Biscuit are each scarcer than the blank back. And, the same is most likely true for the D328 Weil Baking as well - it's true if only 1 of the 7 E135s in the SGC pop report is a blank back (SGC doesn't distinguish between E135 blank backs and E135 Collins-McCarthy backs, whereas PSA does).

oldjudge 11-06-2018 08:33 PM

I agree Val, but, based on past experience, I would be willing to bet that none of the SGC Collins McCarthys are blank back.

Jay, I'll take that bet, inasmuch as 2 of the 3 PSA Collins-McCarthys ARE blank backs! :)

oldjudge 11-06-2018 08:54 PM

Ah, but I said SGC. A beer for you in Chicago if you can show me one.

Jay, I realize that you said SGC. My rationale is, with 2 of the 3 E135s in the PSA pop report being blank backs, what are the odds of ZERO of the 7 E135s in the SGC pop report being blank backs? BTW, I prefer a nice wheat beer! :)

BTW, there are zero 1917 D350-2 Standard Biscuits of WaJo in the pop reports.

Another example of too rare for it's own good.
This one came from a prominent collection of rare types ;)

A few really interesting Wajo items in our current auction...

One of the earliest known type one photos of Johnson in the majors... lot 654

Johnson handwritten letter about his final moments with his dying wife written to a former teammate, really puts a human touch on the baseball legend, a must read... lot 844

Have always liked the birthplace postcard as well... lot 446
