Cards you sold and wish you hadn't
Anybody else other than me have sellers remorse over a sale of a card/cards that you have sold at some point in your life. I have two. First I sold a number of E90-1 American Caramels to Mr. Mint about 20 years ago and the second is I sold a 51 Parkhurst Hockey set about 15 years ago. Sometimes you have to let things go but I wish I had those two sales back!!
|
I sold about 15-20 2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout signed rookies for $750-$1,250 and now they are around $3k-$4k. Not complaining about my profits though :)
|
I had a 1940 Playball Joe DiMaggio and sold it just as the grading companies were getting started. Sold it raw and it would have graded an easy 7.
Robert |
Had a PSA 5 Ruth #144 and a PSA 1 '52 Topps Mantle. Sold them on eBay back in 2005. Got $4000-$4500 total for those two. And I wish I hadn't traded my Tip-Top Boy card for a heavily creased E94 Cicotte at the height of the D-card market.

Of course! I think we all can relate to this question in one way or another. Nothing that wont come back around though on my end so no worries. I hope:D

I regret having sold my childhood collection consisting of most significant cards from late 50's-late 80's at that time...1986 or so.
Other than that my main regrets are not having bought cards rather than having sold them! |

not a valuable card, but long ago I had a T206 southern leaguer of Paige with an old mill back. despite its sentimental value, I traded it away. sometimes I sit and wonder whatever happened to that card.

You traded it to me, I had it graded by PSA. They mislabeled it, so I sold it. Not sure where it’s at now. |
I lost everything through a nasty divorce. Had to start all over in 2009.

Sold a Bill Russell PSA 8 rookie about 6 months before it triped in value (from $8k to $25k+) few years ago. Ouch.

T206 Walter Johnson portrait
T3 Turkey Red Nap Lajoie 1953 Bowman Mickey Mantle I've had many cards but I still wish I had those 3. |
One card that wish i hadnt sold was a e90-1 siegle raw that was easily a 4 or 5
|
Too many to think of... here's a sample, a near complete run of semi-high 52T cards, missing Mays, all others were there and all would have definitely graded out at "7" or "8".....
There's much more but it sickens me to think about it... |
I don't regret selling any of my cards. Some of them have made their way back too.

regret selling
I had a 1914 and a 1915 Cracker Jack Walter Johnson. Bought them in the 80s for $40 each and sold them in the 90s for $200 each. I miss Walter!

I'm pretty sure I regret every card I've sold. Two that are particularly disappointing are a Pittsburgh Exhibit Mantle and a 1952 Topps Mantle. I helped someone complete a run with the first and tripled my money on the second, but I'd rather have the cards and can longer replace them in my budget.
|
I had a T205 Cobb with clipped corners that I bought as part of a collection. It was not especially pretty and I think I got about $250 for it a couple of years ago. I wish I would have held onto it - at least until I upgraded to a nicer example. I have always loved that Cobb much more than the T206’s and probably more than all of his cards except the CJ.
|
Dead centered 1952 Mantle.
Two 1925 Gehrigs. Jesus, I can't even continue this post, it makes me sick to my stomach. I loathe selling. |
ouch!

Onto my regrets: 1968 Topps 3d Clemente - sold raw right around when PSA was getting started - sold for 6K - customer got it graded..........a 9 - 30k card overnight 1966 Topps punchout Mays - 2-3k many years ago - didn't realize how rare it was... sold years later for 23k 1968 Ryan rookie - I owned it since I was a kid - easy 8 - possible 9 - turned down 2k for it when they were selling for 1. Sold it for 1k a year later when no one cared as much. A couple of years later PSA came around... Then there were the ones I never pulled the trigger on that I wish I had .... like the Clemente rookie 8.5 for 10k. 1958 Kahns Clemente probably a 5 or a 6 -for 1 1/2 times "book" at the time ~$500  I was just getting started - seller said I didn't know what I was looking at - he was right :( No one ever learned anything from doing it right With all of that said - grateful to have the collection I do and be part of the net 54 community!! |

I still can't believe I did it ... I think of her all the time!

Ryan, just know that it is very loved by the whole family, and gets me through any rough patch :) Also, it brought smiles to lots of folks at the Slugger Exhibit. It's a card with a warm, happy energy to it; guess that's 'cause it's always meant a lot to those who have taken care of it.

As someone who fancied himself a teenage sports card dealer in the late 1980's there's way too many regrets to not get sad about, especially from an economic perspective. I actually wish I was more of a pack rat and hoarder and not a seller with an instant turn it around mentality, considering even then I preferred the somewhat older oddball material, even if it was considered "junk" at the time, then the new releases.
There was the short stack of Michael Jordan Rookies along with everybody else in that set. The boxes and boxes of 70' and 71' Topps Football Cellos The wax case of 84 Topps Football The giant stack of 73-74 Topps Basketball Rack Packs A giant stack of uncut sheets from various sports, of the various Topps insert and specialty sets from the early 1970's ...........and tons of other stuff all sold for a song..............or enough to pay my car insurance bill and rent to my parents for the month. |
Wow, very cool to see it in that original state pre-slab, thanks for sharing that. Always amazes me how 99% of them managed to get so poorly cut at the factory.
|
Got interested in baseball cards again back in 1988. Attended my first card show at a high school gym sometime in 1989. Couldn't resist what was a really nice copy of a 1957 Frank Robinson. Paid $350. Had a company close down on me in 1991 and was forced to package the Robinson with 5 other cards (including what I think might have been a 9+ second year Stargell) for $300. Still hurts, especially when I see Frank Robby's that couldn't hold a candle to the one I had selling for 3x what I paid. Oh well.

I loved this card and was the one to holder it with PSA.
With many other high grade copies existing due to the black swamp find, I decided to sell it. Now I wish I wouldn't have as the Orange color was more unique. I could have, however, bought it back for $300 less than what I sold it for based on the previous last 2 sales. I just wasn't aware it was even being sold. PSA's auction prices realized I noticed the track history on it easier. If anyone sees this listed again in the future, bump this. ;) http://i64.tinypic.com/10idyft.jpg |

Not a card but I will always miss my autographed Mickey Mantle litho I got in Memphis Tenn in 1989 while stationed at Blytheville AFB AR.. Traded if for comics years later that I was into at the time and swore I'd get another.. At least I have the memories of that day meeting him..
|
About 20 years ago I sold a 51 parkhurst hockey set out of desperation. Wish I had that set back.
|
Let’s see, last year I sold:
1915 cj ty cobb T206 Ty Cobb (both bats) and a red 33 zeenut dimaggio My Goudey babe ruth’s Oh yeah a 52 Topps mantle... As I got the bug back this year, I asked why did I sell as those would be cornerstones in my current smallish collection. Oh yes, a better school district. So I tell myself... could of kept them and sell one of my kids instead. Oh well I guess I made my choice and now I’m stuck with an extra kid. I decided not to collect doubles. Anyone want to trade? :) |
None sell sell sell.

I purchased a card from a woman on ebay twelve years ago and I sent
her a message to let her know that I had sent a money order. This is the message that she sent back to me. Attachment 310772 After having the card for over ten years I sold it last year. If it came up for sale again I would try to buy it back. |
There have been many, but two still give me severe angst: 1. A beautiful exmt Goudey #144 Ruth with the Babe's signature in beautiful bold black ink splashed across it. When getting it authenticated, Jim Spence said it was one of the nicest autographs of Ruth he had ever seen, 2. A T206 Griffith PSA 7 with, yes, a Drum back. I suspect it must be the choicest Drum reverse out there. I often wonder what David Hunt would have paid for it.

Biggest regret is letting go of a Gabby Street (catching) Drum. A little off-center, but the back was solid with no paper loss or issues. I've seen it around since, but now worth many multiples of what I let it go for ...
A story with a happy ending: Many who have been on the Board for awhile may recall ChicagoT206 (or some variation of that name). He came on the Board and ruffled some feathers with his "style." One of his (aggressive) pursuits was putting together a T206 back run. Well, at some point, in the face of criticism from fellow members, he posted a swan song thread wherein he sold all of his back-run cards and left the Board/hobby. His Broad Leaf exemplar was a Billy Purtell. This was one of his last to sell and it lingered for a few days until I decided to nab it - my first BL. I had for a bit and then traded it (for a very nice Shag Hindu as I recall), but soon regretted letting it go. Sometime later, I had a chance to reacquire (I think from a different Board member than who I dealt it to). Anyway, nothing special, but a card I really like, and glad to have back - it must have been meant to be. |
First and foremost I wish I hadn't given away most of my collection to my neighborhood friends when we moved from NJ to Texas in 1967. I'm not alone in wanting my cards back now.
I sold off a beautiful Johnny Unitas rookie about 20 years ago to pay for some audio equipment. I regretted it immediately and it bugged me until I bought another one a few years ago. Not a card but...walking across campus forty+ years ago I found, propped up against a dumpster next to the school media building, a terrific matted 16x20 of Mickey Mantle. It was a B&W shot of him answering questions at a press conference, smiling and wearing a pinstriped suit. Most random thing ever. I had it on my dorm walls and later each apartment I lived in. When I got married and bought a house I tossed it. I hate that I don't have it now. |

I more wish I'd bought than wish I hadn't sold. I thought of the following cards when they were readily affordable but just didn't want to bother:
--Babe Ruth RC --1933 Goudey #144 Ruth --1925 Exhibit Gehrig --1952 Topps Mantle In terms of sold and missed, the worst move I ever made financially was to sell my PSA 7 1954 Topps Aaron and Mays a few years before the price run-up. The cards had basically stagnated for years and when I got an offer I went for it. The worst move ever sentimentally was selling off my childhood run of early Mantles. They were lower grade but all had been picked from $1 or $2 boxes when I was a kid. The most I paid for one was $3.25 at auction in a local card show for a 1952 Bowman. I had 52-53-54 Bowman and 56-57-61-65-66 Topps, and I was probably into them for under $20. I also wish I'd hung on to my run of 1950s-1960s football, especially the 1957 and 1962 Topps cards. Family friends with older kids gave me a giant box of their kids' cards. They had amazing runs of late fifties to early 60s cards. Finally, I wish I'd not sold off the 1969 Topps basketball set I assembled as a kid. I kept the Chamberlain and still have it but had to reassemble the rest of it. |
Almost all of them
I’ve only sold a dozen cards or so.
I wish I had them all back. I didn’t need to sell any of them, I was thinning the type card collection for no apparent reason. A T211 Red Sun that I didn’t do good as a consignment that day. A few T209 , a Big Head Strip Card, e99 , stuff like that which technically didn’t fit my overall collection, but weren’t hurting anything sitting in a box called “ Types” |
My stomach dropped before I opened this thread. There are so many cards I wish I had kept. Then I started reading and I felt a little better. Lots of money left on the table by this group. I’m glad I’m not the only one, cause misery loves company. Off the top of my head...

Wow Chuck. That’s harsh. But thanks for sharing. Makes me feel less bad about selling my Contenders Tom Brady during his suspension before it really took off. Super bowl time could have made me about $8k more.

Which is not intended to "hate" on you for your opinion. As always, as usual, your mileage may vary. At least you do think coins are fun, you just think cards are more fun. The need for me to reply is kinda like... when a guy from your "enemy" team hits a home run and you're sitting in a sea of fans of that team, and you just needed to make some kind of gesture to support your team. :D |
Babe Ruth 1933 Goudey
I purchased this one from a member of this site in 2011 for $3,500, then traded it to Sean Brennan sometime in 2013 after I acquired a no. 144. I regretted that trade for a couple years until I reacquired the card when I purchased Sean's entire Goudey collection in 2015. I'm going to hang onto it this time.

Just a few cards early in my T210/T209 collection that come to find out are quite tough to acquire. Live and learn, right?
