Let's recommend some movies
Molly's Game,, superb Idris Elba, sexy and superb Jessica Chastain.
And a rollicking script based on an autobiography. Poker players will probably love this one. And that was only one reason that I did. |
Are we recommending current movies only, or classic favorites as well?

I heard "Dunkirk" was good, though I wasn't really able to see it yet, been busy with work, but I've been hearing good reviews about it.

Man, the more reason for me to see it. :)
|
One of my favorite movies is World's Fastest Indian. Anyone that is into motorcycles or cars will probably like it.
James |
I just saw The Post.
Terrific movie. |
I've yet to see Dunkirk, but here's a few that come to mind:
City of God (great movie) When we were Kings (favorite documentary) Ex Machina (sci-fi) |
Old
I only watch really old movies.
I’ll get around to seeing these newer movies like Dunkirk when I’m old (too late?:p) Last night I re-watched “ Christmas in Connecticut (1945)“ which is a screwball comedy / part romance movie. The night before was another comedy starring one of the greatest actors ever, Edward G. Robinson “A Slight Case of Murder” (1938) , a few nights before that was “Larceny Inc” (1942) also with EGR. He had a real comedic knack even though he was more known for dramatic roles. I have a few days off during the holidays, meaning I can stay up later and browse the offerings on my Turner Classic Movies app. Beyond this site and email that app is what I use this IPAD for the most! |

Hell or High Water. Think it came out in 2016. Awesome movie not many people saw.
I always recommend Almost Famous to people if you are a fan of 70s rock and music journalism. Anything by Richard Linklater. |
Some less obvious films I really like:
Atomic Cafe (doc on the Cold War) They All Laughed (Bogdanovich's NYC in the early 80's) A Midnight Clear Mountains of the Moon Any film by Whit Stillman Costa Brava (circa 2000 indie film from Catalunya) My Man Godfrey Johnny Stecchino The Gods Must be Crazy |
I'll watch Christmas in Connecticut for the first time this weekend. I'm a huge Barbara Stanwyck fan. Two of her best I'd recommend: Double Indemnity, and The Lady Eve.
What kinds of films do you all like? My plan is to write about film history, so this is right in my wheelhouse. |
I love They All Laughed. Really underrated homage to the screwball comedy. John Ritter, Audrey Hepburn (her last film), Ben Gazara and Dorothy Stratten (also her last film). Dorothy looked absolutely luminous. I think she would have been a huge star. She had real screen presence, and she was very serious about her craft.
Peter Bogdanovich is somebody I'd really like to meet. His encyclopedic knowledge of film is pretty much legendary at this point. Also, What's Up, Doc?, Paper Moon and The Last Picture Show rank among the finest American films of the 1970s. Quote:

I love the movie, The Game with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn.
Just be sure to pay attention, as there is a lot going on in the movie. |
Wind River
Robot & Frank . |
There's a bunch of Coen brother's movies I like; too many to name.
A better than I expected somewhat recent movie (not Coen) is "Hacksaw Ridge" |
worked in video rental store from 86-06

At the movie rental business I worked at, my fathers, we specialized in older and odd/rare titles. Our inventory had almost 20k different titles.
Some of my favorite, I like horror, sci-fi and ones where the bad guy wins. Brain Dead, mind bending Bill Pullman film. Fallen, Denzel at his best. Altered States, William Hurt masterpiece. Falling Down, Michael Douglas portraying how all people have felt at one time. Soylent Green, the great Charlton Heston, referencing women as furniture. Wow has time changed. All-Time favorite horror/gore/comedy...guy straps a lawnmower to his chest and walks through a room of undead. Brilliant and hilarious scene. Dead Alive |
On break for the holidays, had to order up The Big Country to watch again. Western, but much bigger than "just" a western.
Thought Hacksaw Ridge was phenomenal, really liked Dunkirk. My friends keep telling me to see Thor, it's not just a silly comic book movie, supposedly really funny, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. If you're ever in the mood for dumb/funny/action, you can't beat Big Trouble in Little China! |

Wonder Boys
Everybody Wants Some Hidden Figures Not a great movie but a movie that is greatly enjoyable if you don't need cinematic genius with your films: Midnight Madness, is as enjoyable as any movie i have ever seen but it is silly 1980s style humor. Something for which I am admittedly a sucker . |
Just saw The Big Sick,, if you like really good rom coms then this is for you. It scored a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I saw this on Monday. Loved it. Aidy Bryant is very very funny. (not just in this movie, I think she's a riot on SNL). |
Dunkirk ( Dunkerque) is a very realistic presentation of a major event at the start of WWII.....it is very highly recommended.
Then follow it up with Darkest Hour (currently showing in most theatres). This movie portrays Winston Churchill's early days as Prime Minister in the Spring of 1940 and his struggle with the "appeasement" politicians which he had to deal with leading up to the events in Dunkirk. Gary Oldman (Churchill) deserves an Academy Award for his performance. TED Z . |
Dunkirk was excellent. Saw it in the theater. Was rivieting. Was amazing to me how little dialogue there was in spors. It had the effect of really putting you in the middle of it all, which is sort of the point of any movie. Don't need a ton of dialogue on a good war movie. Let the action tell the story.

Well, I like OLD movies, so here's a few. First of all, TCM is running a six movie marathon on New Year's Eve of The Thin Man movies with Myrna Loy and William Powell. I have had a little crush on Myrna Loy since I was a boy (and my beautiful wife has hair that is exactly the same style she wore in the 30's). If you like funny movies with clever banter, these might be for you.
I also love The Big Sleep with Bogart. Oh, and one other... I was at the Goodwill store the other day and picked up a still wrapped VHS of Breaking Away. I've seen it a dozen times, but for 49 cents, I couldn't pass it up. We watched it again last night. What a wonderful movie. |
There are many more but these come to mind.
The Shawshank redemption, with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. Excellent, much watch movie. Man on Fire, my favorite Denzel Washington movie. I love when justice wins! Seven, with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman again. Great actor! Forest Gump, of course. Saving Private Ryan, another excellent Tom Hanks movie. The silence of the Lambs. Jodie Foster. I'll have to make it to see Dunkirk. Aside from the comments here, there are many who speak very highly of it. |

The Searchers
High Noon To Kill a Mockingbird Fried Green Tomatoes The Seven Year Itch (Tom Ewell never fails to crack me up) |
Somehow this one snuck by me for a few years, but I saw "The Book Thief" a few days ago. The young lady in the lead role (Sophie Nelisse) was absolutely wonderful. A ten hanky ending for me I'm afraid, but still thought it a beautiful film.

Never grow tired of rewatching my four faves by "Clint the Squint":
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly The Outlaw Josey Wales Heartbreak Ridge Gran Tornio |
Let It Ride
Full Metal Jacket Devil's Advocate Stalag 17 Die Hard with a Vengeance The Inner Circle (1991) Enf Of Watch Bad Grandpa |

I'm with Irv, The Shawshank Redemption is the best movie I've ever seen. Momento is a close second. It will blow your mind if you've never seen it. I enjoyed A Time to Kill as well. One of few movies that's just as good as the book.
|
Just saw The Post. Outstanding, although I'm biased. I would pay to watch a two-hour infomercial on toenail fungus ointment if Meryl Streep was in it.
|
I rented a movie from Netflix, but did not notice that it was a foreign (Danish) film.
Luck was with me and it was outstanding! About a piece of history I knew nothing about. I highly recommend 'Land of Mine'. . |
The Godfather
Bridge on the River Kwai The Shawshank Redemption Rocky Forest Gump My Cousin Vinnie The Graduate The Sting Dr. Strangelove My Man Godfrey |
Casino
The Shawshank Redemption The VVitch (highly recommended) The Danish Girl 12 Years a Slave American Beauty |
Casino is terribly underrated. It's no Goodfellas, but a damm enjoyable movie.
|
For Josey Wales fans
Did you know, Abe the Mountain Man that got the drop on Josey was played by Len Lasser, who also played Uncle Leo on Seinfeld. ?
Regatds, Len |
A good recent release that the Mrs. and I both enjoyed is "Molly's Game". But only if you're into poker, gambling, illegal activity, and sports (cannot imagine anyone here is into those things).
Plus she is pretty easy on the eyes. |
If you want to see a great action flick, then I highly recommend Terminator Salvation starring Christian Bale.
Now Terminator Genisys, on the other hand, is ridiculously stupid! They have a 70-year-old Arnold in that film who is cracking jokes nonstop and smiling at people. The storyline is also really confusing. Avoid this movie. |

I like this topic!
This is one of those casual conversations I will always get suckered into - I don't care if I had never spoken with the person before in my life. If movies are mentioned, I'm in.
Here would be my recommendations (largely based upon my favorite movies): The Shawshank Redemption - agreeing with a few of you that this is the best film ever made. Everything is perfect in this movie, and the marriage of all of the aspects is seamless. Godfather I & II The III is good relative to other movies, but doesn't deserve to be a part of the perfection that is Godfather. The score, the tragedy, just amazing. It's a Wonderful Life This is a lot of people's family favorite, and it's that contextual and familial feel that make this movie. I literally cannot watch this movie without simply sitting there in tears like a toddler throughout the entire thing. My wife will come in as I will be watching the movie angrily every year, disgusted that I can't make it 5 minutes without crying. Lawrence of Arabia Still the most interesting character study I've seen on film. It's not for everyone, as I have no problem sitting there for 3+ hours and devouring it. River Runs Through It There are few movies that I have dwelt on for days after the fact. I remember when I first saw this as a high school student in early 2000s, and I remember mowing the lawn in a state of morose over this movie. Schindler's List The scene at the end by Liam Neeson is still probably the most powerful scene I have ever seen in movies. I will weep every time. Rope If I had to pick my favorite Hitchcock movie, this actually wouldn't be it, but I think it's brilliant and different. The extremely long takes in this film give it a feel as though you are there. On the Waterfront Iconic quotes, Marlon Brando at his peak, great symbolism, and perfect acting. 12 Angry Men Basically everyone needs to see this movie at some point. It's brilliant. One of my favorite quotes in any film [Juror #7 gets up and heads to the bathroom] Juror #9: Now I'm talking here! You have no right to leave this room - ! Juror #8: [calmly stopping him] He can't hear you, and he never will. Let's sit down. I'll stop for now. |
Rekindled
I’m going to admit that I have an obsession with Turner Classic movies that is beginning to take over my late evening life...right after baseball games finish.
I’ve been considering taking a week off from work and doing nothing but watching classic movies. That could describe 7 days in December when it will probably be raining around here anyway... I’ve watched these all again lately: A Night at the Opera [Marx bros.] The Man who knew too much [James Stewart & Doris Day] Bridge on the River Kwai [William Holden, Alec Guinness] The African Queen [Bogart & Hepburn] Dark Passage [Bogart & Bacall] Captain Courageous [Spencer Tracy] Grand Hotel [ensemble , awesome cast] Captain Blood [Errol Flynn] The Long Street [Henry Fonda &Lucille Ball] The Tuttles of Tahiti [Charles Laughton] Confidential Agent [Boyer & Bacall] Still my all time favorites, which you may not need the top billed actors for:
|
I'm a sucker for the old Sidney Toler Charlie Chan movies and the older Dead End Kids, Dead End, Angels with Dirty Faces, Crime School, etc.
|
I just watched "Man on Fire" again a few weeks ago. Not that we have a lot of movies at our trailer, but I never get tired of it. :)

But what really impressed me was her love for John Cazale (Fredo, Godfather) If you've never heard the story of John I suggest you find it. Al Pacino called him the greatest actor he ever knew. He passed away of cancer and Meryl stood by him to the very end. He was the love of her life. Mucho respect for her as a person after I read the story. |
i like DeNeiro...just recently watched Dirty Grandpa. Pretty darn hilarious!
|
Two I've seen recently:
Atomic Blonde - pretty good with a GREAT 1989-ish soundtrack! GREAT Movie - Only the Brave . |
One a my fav that came out of nowhere, "Kill The Irishman". Had never heard of it when a friend said GIVE IT A SHOT !
|
On The Basis of Sex
I just saw On The Basis of Sex.
Do not get carried away guys, :) it is a movie about Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her historic legal work. I really liked this film. |
I suggest Memento. It's a super film that really sucks you in scene to scene. Anyone else ever seen it?

A Star is Born
I just saw "A Star is Born". It is a wonderful movie, and Lady Gaga is awesome. My wife wanted to see it and I wasn't all that thrilled about going, but it was really good.

I'm looking forward to seeing Clint's new move, The Mule. Has anyone seen it yet?
|
Personally I thought Dunkirk was boring. The Darkest Hour was excellent.
My fav movie of all time is without question Inherit The Wind. It was remade a few different times, but the 1963 version with Spencer Tracy, Fredrick March, and Gene Kelly is by far the best version. Well worth the time to check it out. Also, Clint's "Trouble with The Curve" was a very good movie and even better for a baseball fan. |
