Bid on 73 lots, won 6 of them. Was the under bidder on many, including some Ruths that I thought went for fair prices. I should have gone higher...especially on that super rare 33 Exhibits 4 on 1...oh well.

Here are the one's I was lucky enough to snag:

1922 Eastern Exhibit Dave Bancroft (HOF) - SGC EX 60
1926-29 Exhibit Postcard Backs Jim Bottomley (Blank Back) - SGC VG/EX 50
1926-29 Exhibit Postcard Back Frankie Frisch (St. Louis) - SGC VG/EX 50
1926-29 Exhibit Postcard Back Gabby Hartnett (Photo Background) - SGC EX 60
1926-29 Exhibit Postcard Back Dazzy Vance - SGC VG/EX 50
1934-36 Diamond Stars SGC-Graded Pair (#99 Traynor SGC 20, #98 Rowe SGC 45)

The Bottomley was the best of the bunch, as it's a short printed blank back.

The high number Diamond Stars filled some holes in my master set pursuit.

I've never seen a Diamond Stars with a blank back. I've been collecting them for 10 years. Not sure if it's a printing error, set up piece, etc. I've been unable to find a previous comp.

Also unsure of how( or if) the rarity affects value.

If the back is blank, how did SGC know if it was #11 or #103? Also, #103 could only be a 1936... and they labeled it 1934, so something is off in my opinion.

keating3620 04-02-2017 02:32 PM

With a blank back they would not know what year the card was produced. The #11 card was produced in '34 and '35. You are correct, The #103 card was only produced in '36. Since diamond stars were produced in '34-'36 many holders have incorrect years listed or "1934-1936".

I struck out. Had a number of items I was "watching" on the Collectable app but not on the website and forgot about them. Would have like to have bid on the Exhibits 23-24 Simmons and Hartnett along with a couple of others.

Oh well...

Picked up a few E102s for my E92-family collection. I had planned to go after a lot more E92/101/102s (great selection of all), but decided to gear down after a couple cards higher on my want-list popped up in some other auctions. (Here's hoping my next post in the April pickups thread is a big one!)

Shean is my 41st different nadja and the highest of the 3 SGC graded (none by PSA). The other 2 are already in the top registry sets. http://net54baseball.com/picture.php...ictureid=22378

Bescher is my 6th red crofts. I now own both that have been confirmed in previous threads.

Well now that its over I can say, this auction literally had my brain overloaded. So many cards I needed for my T210 set it was literally impossible to add them all. I did manage a cool dozen with one being a Orange Border upgrade and 11 new to my collection cards. A few with very low pops that got zero action. Im looking forward to the full Series sets being broken down as they always seem to be.

Great cards everyone! Fun auction:D

I got the three Mrs Bill Dickey 1941-1943 Yankee season passes. Will likely look to sell the 1942 and 1943 versions. Will hold onto the 1941 for obvious reasons.

Have been looking for a nice Mantle and this one is terrific. A couple small blotches but overall a really nice ball, a very bold signature, and it's UDA to boot. Very happy.

Great auction and I wish they would close it down on a per lot basis as I couldn't stay up later than 3AM. Was glad to wake up and see some of my bids held, while others I was outbid on after 6AM. Always a good day when you can add Ty, Joe, and Lou to the collection.

Great pickups, Jay! I loved that red Gehrig.

Happy to pick these two cards. The Ruth matches the b/w tint one that I picked up last year at LOTG. And definitely happy to get this Gehrig/DiMaggio Exhibit, for JoeD's second year card.

familytoad 04-03-2017 01:37 AM

Lou and obaks and a good night's rest.

I wasn't going to stay up too late, so I made my last bids and closed my eyes knowing that I wouldn't win them all.

I got a Gehrig and some Obak cards that I really like...pleasantly surprised!

W502 is the same pose as Lou's York Caramel type2, super cool.

I wish I had gotten serious about OBAK cards years ago, but I am now gathering them in all grades for 1910 and 1911. (I think the 1909 have already passed me by.)

These cards are simply beautiful. Even tattered versions look great, but a mid-high graded obak card is dang hard to beat for color and interesting poses.

Great auction again, Al!

Great pickup on the Ruth '31-32 Exhibit. :) I bowed out at $1,000. With the explosion in Ruth cards the last few years, I thought a scarce card like the
'31-32 Exhibit might go higher than what it did.

Nice pick up on the Gehrig Exhibit. The plain background is a tough one.

Snapolit1 04-03-2017 07:05 AM

Was in the red Gehrig till the end, having been top bidder for weeks. But bowed out in the early hours to go in a different direction. Same for the Ruth face shot. Awesome cards. Was really surprised at the action on these. Seems a year ago I would have gotten the Gehrig for half of what it went for here. Great card.

I got beat out on some of the Exhibits...but I did get three Post Card Backs Connor, Graham and Waterfield on the Football side. This was one of the better Exhibit auctions that I've seen (or maybe ever) in terms of quantity, quality and hard to find variations. I'm glad the Exhibit cards are now gaining a lot of wide spread interest and appreciation in the hobby in the last few years.

Bid on 73 lots, won 6 of them.
The nice thing about collecting the stuff I collect is that I bid on 6 items and won 5 of them. 3 for the opening bid amount. The chance for a resale profit is nil, but that works fine for me.

The lot I lost would have been an upgrade, and I didn't expect it go for the opening bid amount, and I never planned to bid higher.

I look forward to adding these to my collection:
1920 Yankees Official Scorecard: Ruth vs. Cobb
1947 NY Journal-American New York Giants Premium
1949 Almendares (Cuban) Premium
1949-50 Almendares (Cuba) Team Photo Premium
1949-52 Brooklyn Dodgers Original Snapshot Collection (58)

I simply didn't want to pay above market, and was fully expecting to lose out on many of my bids - even though I did hold out some hope to win at least 1 Ruth or Gehrig. I'm currently not a dealer (but aspire to deal at local shows some day). The same thing usually happens to me on PWCC auctions - my win rate is pathetic because so much of it goes above market, but I do usually still end up with something. It's a good thing that I'm not set on any one particular card or issue, and there is always next time!

I know this has been debated before, and many will disagree with me, but I tend to believe the winning price in a well-publicized, fairly run auction IS the current market price for a new card. It's when you buy from a dealer who sources his inventory from auctions like these when you tend to pay above market. (Which I've done many times when I really wanted a card.)

I generally agree with this. However, the issues for us collectors is that I suspect in most cases there are relatively few people batting it out for the expensive stuff. Take the beautiful red Gehrig which I didn't win. At the end of the auction there may have been 3 people, including me, pushing that up. What happens when those 3 people get one? The demand could get significantly weaker. Demand is what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller. Well the universe of willing buyers is likely pretty small for some specialized stuff.

sterlingfox 04-04-2017 07:50 AM

I believe that PWCC auctions tend to finish higher than auctions from other sellers. I gauge "market" value as what a card of similar quality (not necessarily the same numerical grade from the same grading company) goes for across all platforms (eBay, AH's, B/S/T, etc) within the past 6 to 12 months at most. Yes, there will be exceptions to this. There have been significant run ups on certain players recently (Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, etc) where a sale from 12 months ago will be meaningless. If a card sells above current market, then it's very possible that it's market value has adjusted upwards. However, it's also possible that it sold high this time (possibly due to 2 or 3 buyers battling it out), and will sell at, or even below, market next time because 1 of the buyers has now acquired the card. Buying it "above market" runs a slight risk if it's the "battling it out" scenario, and I tend to shy away from such risks. If it's a player/card that I badly want, then I'm usually willing to go a bit above market, but not much. There are lots of fantastic, high quality cards out there that are available at public auction, so I choose to not be one of those "battlers", and wait patiently for cards to sell at or below market. I did still win 6 lots in LOTG, and I also won a modest Ruth (below market!) in another recent auction, so I'm confident I'll get more with time and patience. It might take me longer, but I'm in no hurry :-)

I agree, if its sooo easy to sell with pwcc and get above market prices why not just buy at 'market' and sell with pwcc. Its not that easy. I am talking about legit buyers and sellers.. The market is the market.

I sold about 25 items with PWCC and would say 23 of them came in below the most recent sale reported on VCP. It isn't that easy.

Given the # of times this variation comes to market the underbidders could wait for years to find another offering.

It seems like the plain background 25-31 Exhibits have shot up quite a bit. They seem to carry a higher premium than the other short prints (blank backs, ESCO coupon corners, "correspondence" reverse)

The price for that red Gehrig is not coming down. I didn't even bid on that one because there was just too much other stuff, and a huge amount of things in REA coming up that I am interested in. I have one plain Gehrig (below) that I purchased for $500 in 2013, and it is in rough condition. I'd love to get a nicer looking plain Gehrig some day in a different color variation.

I may have been the underbidder on those bazooka. I bought several Clemente lots, but quit bidding on some of the panels when I went over my spending limit. First auction that I won more than I lost. I thought most of the prices were very reasonable.

I'm afraid Jason and I are bidding against each other on the T210s but I managed to snare about 10 Series 6 cards and 3 orange borders from Series 3 along with several 1918 Red Border Zeenuts which went surprisingly cheap.
