Are You One in a Million? - A Contest No More

Members of the "elite 325"

1. bbcard1

It's March 1st and not April 1st, so this is no joke. You could be rarer than you think and by participating you could win the grand prize.

Rules and Assumptions:

1. There are currently about 325,000,000 folks in the United States in 2016.

2. Without offending our Canadian friends and others, for the purpose of this contest all board members will be considered equal and from the US.

3. Net 54 is a special subset of this total population and as such, the 324,000,000 folks who are not yet members of Net54 will be granted "undocumented" membership for this contest.

4. Activity on the board will be quantified by the number of posts that you have made on Net 54, regardless of the quality of their content.

5. Leon has provided me with the number of posts required to be in the top 325 posters on Net 54. Those 325 members are legitiment claimants to the title of "One in a Million".

6. Post on this thread to learn if you are one in a million. Each day I will choose a random post from this thread by one of the 325 special people and in time, the threshold required to be included will be approached. I will do this by creating a list of the "elite 325" at the top of this post, adding one name per day.

7. The contest, however, will be to identify the person who is 33rd on the list of posters. This individual holds the distinction of being the member of Net54 who is truly "One in Ten Million".

8. When you post on the thread feel free to guess who the "One in Ten Million" board member is?

9. This will be difficult initially, but as the one million threshold becomes clear, it should become easier.

10. When and if the "One in Ten Million" individual posts on this thread, it will be revealed that he or she has posted, but not immediately, but within 7-10 days? Only if this person guesses himself or herself in their initial post, can they win. If another member guesses the winner before the 7-10 day reveal, I will duplicate the prize and there will be two winners.

11. When this occurs, the contest should end rather quickly depending on the volume of posts in that 7-10 period?

12. Leon has provided a prize fund of 250 dimes to the winner.;)

13. The data used to determine both the threshold and the Ten Million to One individual is constantly changing of course. Both the number and the person were determined at 8AM central time today, March 1st.

14. The contest will end by April 1st, no fooling.

Aquarian Sports Cards 03-01-2017 10:31 AM

My head hurts. Even though I post a bit I'm pretty damn new but just to cover my bases. Is it me?

bn2cardz 03-01-2017 10:33 AM

My guess is bnorth

Edit to clarify that is my guess for "One in Ten Million" board member. (33rd most posts)
Of course I assume we aren't counting "Archive" and "Archive2"

Edit to add I think that I am around 56th

KMayUSA6060 03-01-2017 10:46 AM

For 33rd, my guess is Frank himself (frankbmd).

SMPEP 03-01-2017 10:48 AM

So if I read that correctly (and not sure that I did), if I guess I'm Mr. Ten Million I get $25. If I guess someone else is Mr. ten Million, I get nothing.

If that's the case ... I think I'm Mr. Ten Million.

Cheers,
patrick

bbcard1 03-01-2017 10:52 AM

i might be in that range, but i suspect lower. I do spend too damn much time here. I'll guess Ted Zan. I actually thing he's higher, probably in the top 10, but he's a helluva guy and I just want to go on the record saying that.

DaveW 03-01-2017 11:02 AM

I think 250 dimes is $25. I'd guess me, but I'm sure I'm not in the top 1000. I'll guess Adrian (remember him?) although he might have been in the top 10 after 1 month.

SMPEP 03-01-2017 11:04 AM

For some reason, I read it as 25 dimes. See I did have the right caveat of "if I read this correctly"!

I edited my math though.

Cheers,
Patrick

Rich Falvo 03-01-2017 11:09 AM

I have no idea. I just wanted to raise my post count closer to double digits. :)

I see someone else was thinking the same as me...

sam majors 03-01-2017 11:19 AM

I know it's a one in a million shot but it's probably me. Sam Majors

Howe’s Hunter 03-01-2017 11:24 AM

Know it's not me

and even if it was, for a prize, I would be happy for one of the photographic quarters Leon used to put in all his photos.

njdunkin1 03-01-2017 11:38 AM

Great post.

Is it me, said the fly?

jcmtiger 03-01-2017 11:40 AM

Me! Me! Me! Me!

Ha! Ha!

bnorth 03-01-2017 11:42 AM

I will guess me also since 2 others already have. All I know is I am glad post content does't matter.:) Still not 100% sure what the contest is with Franks crazy list of rules but I can always use a handful of dimes.

EDIT: Just looked and I have 3017 posts, maybe I have a BB card problem.:)

wolf441 03-01-2017 11:43 AM

B North with 3016
coming in just ahead of Sykes22 with 3004

scooter729 03-01-2017 11:45 AM

Archive has over 58,000 posts, so I am sure they are at least Two in 10 Million. Of course, they will sue themselves over being declared only 1 in a million.

Did I win yet?

Joshchisox08 03-01-2017 12:23 PM

Hmmmm

irishdenny 03-01-2017 12:28 PM

If I'm Correct...
I Think I Remember a Charity Named " March of Dimes"!?
I Thought I saw a riddle within your wonderful write~up Frank... ;)

And of Course, "It's me!"

Archive and Archive2 ARE counted for this game. It was a 100% data dump on most posts by any member, including Archive...before and after the lawsuit :).

h2oya311 03-01-2017 12:30 PM

My guess

The Grand Poohbah must be Leon with over 21k posts.

I'm going to guess Bicem (Jeff Prizner) with over 2,500 posts. I'm hopeful that it's a postcard guy and not a t206er (sorry to all y'all monster-chasers out there).

Any reference to a dump suggests the need for one of those toilet paper holders.

Another issue not considered is the possibility that a deceased board member (ergo not able to post on the thread) could be the winner of the crown. If that is the case, I will need more than toilet paper to clean my way out of the mess that would create.

ramram 03-01-2017 12:53 PM

It's me.

Rob M

tschock 03-01-2017 01:00 PM

Sooooo... if I said "NOT IT" (touching my nose with my index finger, of course), that would be a correct answer. Would I win??? :D

tiger8mush 03-01-2017 01:04 PM

I'll guess Neal (greenmonster66).

What exactly am I guessing for and what is up for stakes here? I got lost after about rule #5 :)

brob28 03-01-2017 01:04 PM

I'm going to trip-up all the pre-war guys and choose Al Richter from the post-war side.

brianp-beme 03-01-2017 01:14 PM

It is possible I am in the top 325. Hey, anything is possible

As far as the 33rd most prolific poster, I would guess barrysloate. He rarely posts anymore, but back in the day he posted up a post storm.

Brian

Bestdj777 03-01-2017 01:19 PM

My guess is that it's me.

Rookiemonster 03-01-2017 01:29 PM

I'm picking and praying with Jobu

Butch7999 03-01-2017 01:34 PM

Is the poster with the 33rd most posts the poster with the 33rd most posts as of 12:23pm today, or the poster with the 33rd most posts as of April 1st?

Given this new information, this is going to be MUCH harder...it is probably a member who was active back in the day but no longer posts. I'll take a SWAG and put in a new guess. He still posts (but not nearly as frequently these days):

Phil Garry - bcbgcbrcb

PM770 03-01-2017 01:38 PM

I'm assuming Archive's posting activity went down significantly after the lawsuit. Archive2 is probably just an alt.

And remember : You are unique.....just like everybody else.

I have no idea what to do on this thread or contest...but I'll say the winner is La La Land.

CW 03-01-2017 01:48 PM

Only Frank could come up with such a simple contest yet have 14 rules. :)

My guess is Al, aka "ALR-Bishop" as Mr. One in Ten Million.

There will not be any new rules or regulations unless I eliminate two of the existing rules.

In which case I would say that the 33rd is Rich Klein.

pawpawdiv9 03-01-2017 02:07 PM

I'm was goona guess maybe its TedZ, but as mentioned maybe higher.
I know he put out a ton of info on the Monster.
Maybe its the 'Jolly' Green Giant. JollyElm. He has about 2425 post.

clydepepper 03-01-2017 02:14 PM

Is this Frank's round-about way of letting me know I fill way too many threads - sorry, I just don't do facebook or twitter.

- and I'm retired and single and cannot seem to be able to teach my dog plain English!

- and there's a dad-gum tobacco card that travels a whole lot more than me!

GasHouseGang 03-01-2017 02:15 PM

If they count lurking I might make it, but otherwise I doubt it.

Marslife 03-01-2017 03:08 PM

Low poster on the totem pole

Per my stats I post 0.16 posts per day. that has to be way down on the list?

Peace!

drmondobueno 03-01-2017 03:36 PM

Not me.

Nobody I know. Nobody living close by. That leaves damn near everybody.

Good luck with that.

Wutup, Cliff!

DHogan 03-01-2017 03:44 PM

I know it's not me. People tell me I'm too quiet.

HercDriver 03-01-2017 04:08 PM

Depends...

If you were Methusulah, and you started posting when you were 20 yrs old, that would be 55,442 posts.

I can only conclude that Archive was not Mesthusulah, unless of course he started posting before the age of 20.;)

irv 03-01-2017 04:33 PM

I know I have posted quite a bit since joining back in January of 2016, but without frequenting all the threads in each section on a regular basis, like I normally do in post war and the home page, I am not sure if I make the cut or not?

As Frank announces the top 325, I could figure out where these people sit on list. Then as more names are listed, I could then add to my 1213 posts, to get closer to the "Ten Million" member. Now that may take me responding to this thread 2, 3, or 4000 times. But it could work ...............

Scott,
Based on rule #13 I think it's the person that was in the 33rd position at
8:00 AM central time this morning (March 1st).

I do believe the logic is flawed. You can't say that 2 people of the 325 are not part of the same 1 million people and that no one is part of a particular million person group, however, what is the prize for guessing all of the members in order in one shot?

frankbmd 03-01-2017 10:21 PM

My logic is not as flawed as your question.

I was not suggesting there were 1 million people in any group of forum members.

Let's try to 'splain this to you again.

325 members of the forum (past or present, deceased or alive) have posted enough times to qualify for the "one in a million" classification based on the most recent estimate of the total US population of 325,000,000.

33 members (or really 32 and one half) qualify for the "one in ten million" classification. and can self identify themselves once the winner is identified. The person designated as the winning "One in Ten Million" entry is the thirty- third member of this group by decree, my decree.

An analogous question would be to ask what ball player has a lifetime batting average closest to .300. Cobb and many others all have career averages over .300 but would not be the closest to .300.

In this contest the member who is closest to the one in ten million cutoff is the one we are looking for. Granted Leon, for example, is in the one in ten million group, but he is also in the one in one hundred million group.

I hope this helps.

To answer your question, you would win $25.00 divided by the total membership of Net54. That would be less than half a cent which would round off to zero, but perhaps we can find a currency with a lower valuation of coins to accomodate your Pyrrhic victory, so you don't leave empty handed.:D
I hope you realize that I'm doing this for Peanuts --- "Good Grief"

NiceDocter 03-01-2017 10:53 PM

Where my prize be?

PhillipAbbott79 03-01-2017 11:18 PM

I understood what you are suggesting, well. I was attempting to provide a different perspective on the literal words of '1 in a million', since nothing about the thread is easy to read

Thank you for disqualifying yourself and ruining the contest for everyone else.

There will be no winner. And to add insult to injury you have highlighted the wrong Board member.

Over and out.

PhillipAbbott79 03-02-2017 12:39 AM

I thought I won. I gave you the answer and the member highlighted is the 33rd member with the most posts at the time it was solved.

I honestly didn't want the 25 dollars anyway. Ruined it? You are just mad I crushed your puzzle so easily and you didn't get to have as much fun with it as you thought you would?

Good grief is right.

Good greif is right.

If barrysloate were still actively posting, he would have pointed out that you spelled grief incorrectly.

PS - Party Pooper

Brian

PhillipAbbott79 03-02-2017 12:55 AM

Thanks. I corrected it. I suppose its better than being at a pooper party.

Reminds me of the Padres back in the mid-1970s. They had a middle-innings relief pitcher by the name of Bill Greif. Every time he'd come into a game, my dad would go "Good grief, here comes Greif"!

I'm surprised I'm still fourth in total posts, given I've barely posted in the last two years. Come on guys, catch up.

EvilKing00 03-02-2017 04:58 AM

The way i read it, as someone who used to dabble in sports betting....

250 dimes is $250,000!

From that list posted im 70, :( but ill say its me anyway lol

Leon 03-02-2017 06:05 AM

There was 1 member who had asked to be deleted completely from the board several weeks ago. Deleting a membership is not something usually done so his membership was NOT counted. The long list above isn't exactly correct because of that but only Frank and I knew it. :)
But yes, Phillip screwed this game up for all members who were playing. It goes with the territory. sigh......However the guess was wrong anyway because of my first sentence... LOL......

Rookiemonster 03-02-2017 06:24 AM

Boo this man !! You should send everyone 250 dimes a compensation for your
Acts.

PhillipAbbott79 03-02-2017 06:27 AM

I suppose it really depends on what the definition of a member is. If that person can't login and make another post, then I wouldn't consider them a member.

Just like if you don't pay your dues to your local club, you are no longer a member, you are not getting into your local elk lodge for that meeting. Like people that are banned on the forum are not members or if they no longer have an account, regardless of how that occurred.

I suppose I can be made to lose any which way you want to show that I lost to prove a point.

Leon 03-02-2017 06:36 AM

I didn't just make up what I said, it is the truth. Daryl (the id string of numbers above the one you thought, Rich K) was the actual 33rd member and Frank and I spoke about it on the phone. I told him at that time. So no conspiracy here to make you lose. You are a loser fair and square.

You can be made to lose by the fact that I said it was Rich Klein previous to your post.

I will say it is a strange contest to allow "archive" and "archive2" which aren't single members, but rather a collective gathering of posts made on previous versions of the board by all members. Then on the other hand remove one member because they requested to be so they are no longer a "member". Or are you saying that you are including a former member in the list that we can't see?

It was a fun idea for a contest but there were too many holes in the rules it sounds like.

Just for closure are you stating that 4815162342 really was the 33rd member based on your set of rules?

PhillipAbbott79 03-02-2017 06:43 AM

Fair enough. You would have nailed it, except for that mysterious guy who was a member at one time, but then is no longer a member now that the contest is going, just so no one can figure it out and there is a trick at the end, because that is cool.

Leon 03-02-2017 06:46 AM

As long as the rules were the same for everyone it it didn't really matter how we counted or who was counted. I told Frank that Archive/Archive2 were being counted and one other member wasn't. This was part of the contest and the same for everyone so it was fair, imo. Yes, 4815162342 3,097. was the 33rd member and is even written on a piece of paper on my desk. It is amazing how people twist and contort a game that was supposed to be fun. No good deed......

+1

Loved the idea Frank... Thanks for always breaking up the days' monotony with a bit of baseball related entertainment and humor.

To clarify I am not saying the rules weren't fair. Just strange. You have many fun contests here. I acknowledged that it was a fun idea. But as the person that had to organize the Holiday parties and other office events in my office I know that just because it looks good on paper doesn't mean it will work in reality. This one just fell because of the ambiguous use of the word "member" along with the ability to look up the stats using the tools given to us at the top of the page.

Please don't let this discourage you from putting together other contests. Even if there wasn't a prize it was interesting to see just how often people post.

I can appreciate that. What I don't see is that this random person was mentioned anywhere in the thread. This would be the reason why archive, and archive2 are counted, but this random 1 person thing is not.
