Your Favorite Pick Up of 2016
Stealing this idea from the memorabilia side. What's your favorite card-related pickup of 2016? Just got this in the mail today, and I couldn't be happier:

My favorite pickup of the year was the T210 OB set in the REA Spring auction. As for a single card I would say this upgrade.

I'm not necessarily a card collector but rather fond of this pick up from late 2016.

I had my mind set for a while to get one of these, so was happy to get it this year - my favorite pickup of 2016!

Easy choice for me this year as I have maybe bought 3-4 cards this year.

This was my favorite because before I saw it, I didn't know it was something I needed for my Dots Miller collection

OK, I'm going to cheat and post my favorite pickups (plural).
The following N173 allowed me to complete the "Big 4" that I previously posted about here. Detroit N173s all date to 1888 and required either 35 or 25 certificates/coupons to obtain (pending when they were ordered) which brings me to another favorite pick-up. The following coupons all date to 1888 with the bottom three being unknown to me before this year and now reside in my collection. These are tough, some of them may be unique. Lastly, further progress was made on the N333 Newsboy front including an N333 of Burden together with his studio proof and another Detroit! Anymore, my collecting focus can lead to several month cold spells where nothing turns up but 2016 was a great year. Thank you to Henry Moses, REA, LOTG, & eBay! |

One of these, they are both fun to have. There are several others I love, it has been a very good year. Added many to my T211s and D310s, started on E104s (especially with Nadja backs), D304s, and my first N321, T214 and T4. Oh, and how could I forget getting my 1911 Zeenut Halla and Fullerton (along with several other toughies, thanks Rhett)? I have to count my blessings, other things have been pretty tough this year, but card collecting has been great. Merry Christmas to you all.
|
All around I've had a very blessed 2016. It's very difficult for me to single out one particular card as a favorite, however, there's something about fat bordered T206's that keep me coming back for more.

EDJS, I can't t believe the 1911 Zeenut Halla didn't make the cut! :D I'm kidding, your pickups are always some of my favorites-- you really have a good eye for the obscure stuff!
Joe, your stuff is always fun to check out, I love the Hess Newsboy studio cabinet! My favorite for 2016 is probably the following (with coupon)... http://www.starsofthediamond.com/13zeeheilman.jpg |
BTW Joe, only crazy people collect the 19th Century Tobacco Coupons that were used for redemptions!

All things considered...this guy!

I am a low budget collector so always looking to acquire a bargain which mostly means lesser condition and less desirable issues. For pre-war that has steered me towards the premiums of the mid 30s. I purchased this Goudey Wide Pen raw off eBay and submitted to SGC as part of a special. Total cost (including grading/shipping) ended up less than $30. Great image of a HOFer. Same pose as his '33 card and a fraction of what a similar condition example of that issue would have cost me.

Complete set of T51 Murad College series from Kit Young on eBay. Graded from PSA 4s all the way up to PSA 8s, a great investment at only $6/card. Helped me get down to needing 10 cards for the Master Set.
Many of them have been graded and added to this set: http://www.psacard.com/PSASetRegistr...x?setid=187482 |

I have two favorites. The WaJo completed my hands-at-chest back run (outside of the BL 460, T214, T215 Pirate, and T215-1, if it exists). The T207 is just a great card with history...and I had the opportunity to sit down with its previous owner for beers and a good dinner to receive the card. :)

T211 Pratt

I've worked on collecting Del Pratt cards because of his University of Alabama connection (my PhD is from Alabama). Little did I know how tough some of his cards would be (e.g., 1914 Cracker Jack). The T211 is very tough. I'm still looking for a T210-8.

My three favorite pick-ups in 2016 for each of my collections. The Schulte SC Factory 25 may be my favorite since it took so long to find, but the Williams Venezuelan Topps and the Salutation Exhibit Hartnett are very close seconds in both rarity and the years spent trying to find examples that nice!

What a FUN 2016 ---- Can't say a particular card, but how about a set !! :p
In January I sold my 520 T206 set (privately). It was a very nice, consistent set that was all Piedmont or Sweet Caporal (of course, other than Demmitt and O'Hara). I went for condition over back variety. It was fun, but it was done. After selling, I thought I might take some time off. That lasted maybe two weeks !!! ;) Decided to jump back in, but this time go for more back variety. Backs other than commons, and some mid-tier. After 10 months of buying lots, sorting, keeping, selling, trading, etc, now back up to 519 (missing O'Hara ….. one day). It's been a great experience with back collecting. I have learned a ton about the set, and have a “no end in sight” out look for the future. At first I thought a third would be cool. The realized that half wasn't so unreasonable. :o Now sit at 75% overall, 60% HOF. :) American Beauty 350 w/frame – 32 American Beauty 350 no frame – 1 American Beauty 460 – 3 Cycle 350 – 19 Cycle 460 – 1 EPDG – 29 Hindu – 3 Old Mill Baseball Subjects – 29 Old Mill Southern League – 44 Polar Bear – 62 Piedmont 460 / 42 – 3 Sweet Caporal 150 / 649OP – 33 (Gilbert please !!!!!!) In the recent Goodwin auction I was able to pick-up the T206 Magee Old Mill portrait, its the only Old Mill Magee portrait graded by either PSA, SGC or BVG and as far as I know the only one known. It also enabled me to complete my Magee portrait back run which includes the Magie something I've been pursuing for 4 years. Hopefully if I have time I will post the run later this week. Here's the link if the image doesn't post properly and you care to see it:

Not the most expensive item I bought this year but for some reason there's something about this one that grabs me:
1946 Nashua Dodgers team signed picture with Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Walter Alston, Buz Bavasi and others. Jackie Robinson obviously broke the "color barrier" in 1947, but in 1946 while Jackie was playing in Montreal, Campanella and Newcombe were in Nashua. I had hoped to find a ball signed by that team (to go with my 1946 Montreal Royals ball and 1947 Dodgers) and thought the picture was a lesser option (especially with the signatures on the back, which makes displaying a challenge) but there's something I really like about it. |
