Your Favorite Memorabilia Pick Up of 2016

Less than a month left in the year time to fire up the 2016 Favorite Pick Up thread. Let's see what you got!

I picked up a lot of stuff this year, but I think by far my favorite is this George Sosnak Lincoln Chiefs ball.

For me it is a tie between 2 items I bought from fellow member Tony Quinn. I got an awesome Wade Boggs autographed bat and a autographed program from the 1970 Northern League Cubs that played it the town I live in. They are not just the best from this year but all-time favorites.

Always tough to choose...
For my Nolan Ryan collection:
The backlit Starter brand advertising sign.

For my Vander Meer collection:
The showcase that I purchased for $65 that allows me to properly display my Vandy 1938 collection and the 1938 vintage signed Goldsmith ball with provenance.

For my no-hitter ticket collection:
The vintage signed Ed Head no-hitter ticket from 1946.

Happy holidays to everyone on net54! :)

Thanks Gary! That Vandy ball really is a blazer considering it's age.

While not technically a gamer, this jersey was given to Whitey from Joe D.; who wore it at the Yankees fantasy camp in the mid 1980s.
For me, pretty much the ultimate capstone of my Joe collection (mostly because a real gamer is waaaaaaaayyyy out of my price range! Lol.)

I did not purchase an item of any note baseball-wise this year. However, more generally, it was my best year of collecting sports memorabilia ever - and my main collecting habit is soccer.

Although not my favourite pick-up of the year, the below is my favourite American-related memorabilia. All 4 items pictured relate to the same soccer game - an exhibition game between the New York Cosmos and a World All-Stars XI in 1978 which was Johan Cruyff's first game for the Cosmos.

The ball is the match ball autographed by the World All-Stars XI side. The jerseys are (orange) match-worn goalkeeper shirt by Bailey for World All-Stars, match-worn number 10 shirt by Rivelino who scored one of the World All-Stars goals in a 2-2 result and, finally, the green "second" shirt, number 30, for Johan Cruyff. He, and the Cosmos, wore white so this ended up being unworn.

I don't know if this is my favorite pick-up for the year....but I'm pretty excited about it...just unpacked it a week ago...I'm still sorting it out just what I have...but I'm thinking it's one of the most important cycling broadsides extant...on either side of the pond...I found a reference to this race and learned he came in third...must have been a bad hair day...Another reference on him said Dubois came to the United States the following year after this race...along with a group of other cyclist...and raced here...

Aside from being for a big name cyclist..some important aspects of the poster are that it's dated...and the race was in England, thus in English so we can read it...as opposed to being in French...Also this photo doesn't do it justice...In person it's not tan...it's a mustard yellow with black type...so a real eye catcher!!

Love it! The article is quite interesting to read too...the fats vs. the leans...haha! I would have changed camps a few times over my lifetime...went from lean (swimming days) to fat (post-swimming) to lean (masters swimming) to fat again (desk job w/ two kids). As I near 40, I'd like to change teams again!

Babe and Gehrig

2 Attachment(s)
My favorite pick up this year by far was this Ruth Gehrig photo from Christies. The photo was owned for many years by Stan Coveleski and has an amazing write up by him on the reverse.

"Lou Gehrig & Babe Ruth. I never got any credit for making a hitter out of Babe R. He pitched a game against me he hit the hardest home run I ever had hit off me. 1 wk later they took him away from pitching & put him in the outfield. So I always said to myself that I made a hitter out of him."

Pretty good penmanship for a guy who was working 72 a hours a week in a coal mine as a 12 year old boy in Shamokin, PA.

My favorite two, Pirate cabinet photo and Scoops Carey porcelain...uhm, although not quite to scale.

Exhibitman 12-17-2016 05:11 PM

I'm not sure if this would be memorabilia or cards.

In the 1920s, the Moosehead-Whitely Exercise Co. made one of those steel cable strengthening contraptions. They signed the great Benny Leonard to shill for it. I had this box top in my collection:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...0box%20top.jpg

I always wondered about the "illustrated course". This year I got to stop wondering. I found one. The course comes in an embossed leatherette folder. Here is the booklet:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...Course%206.jpg

The booklet has about a dozen images in an accordion folded piece. The rest of the images are cards, roughly postcard sized. Here is a header card:

My favorite two, Pirate cabinet photo and Scoops Carey porcelain...uhm, although not quite to scale.

Never seen a porcelain baseball "card". That is very cool.
Did a little sleuthing. Carey played for Memphis from 1906 to 1909 so that dates the item to then. You wonder if similar pieces were made for his other team-mates. For instance, Moonlight Graham played twelve games for Memphis in 1906 following his major league "career". A long shot but it gets the imagination salivating.

Those Lucky Strike and Tuxedo signs are amazing.
