Nice Ryan...
eBay did a flash sale last month with a $15 credit on a $75 purchase, which brought this card down to a reasonable price point for my collection: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20Clemente.jpg Also picked up a type card (though "card" may be a bit of a stretch): http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...d%20Gordon.jpg |

It's not a '53 Bowman but, at a fraction of the price, this Reese is a welcome addition to my collection.

Great stuff guys, these arrived this weekend along with several others for my '62 Topps set. Don't usually like ST qualifiers, but I'm 99% certain I can get the stain off the Aaron with water and Q-tip if I really wanted to. Loaded the Mick all star by accident, to lazy to figure out how to remove from my post...
|
That is a pretty sweet looking Clemente congrats on that one. Also a nice looking Munson rookie that I need to add to my collection some day.
Anyway was very happy to add this 63 Mays to my Mays player collection. Not sure why it graded only 6.5 but it beats most 8's I have seen. http://i.imgur.com/HFtVcwr.jpg?1 |
That's a great looking 63 Mays love the all yellow bottom corner and near perfect centering :-)
|
The centering on the 73 Clemente, 52B Musial, and 63 Mays is amazing. All three of those cards have eye appeal that surpasses the grade assigned. Great cards.
The Clemente is such a classic, almost haunting image. The 52B Musial struck me even as a kid, something about the profile, coloring, and background of that image. Forgive the PreWar card, but I gotta share this one below which has me really excited. Landed it thanks to a fellow board member here, in fact. It's an early birthday present, by a few days ;) Have been after the right Shoeless Joe RC some time. But with it being so scarce, getting a centered card in the desired grade made for a challenging hunt. It's very rare that a PreWar icon has a true, undisputed "Rookie Card," and like many who began collecting in the 80's, my main collecting love-- after Mickey Mantle basic issues-- is having the earliest card of my favorite baseball icons. For collectors of my age-range (39, at least for a few days, LOL) who like rookies and the earliest depiction of a player, when the player was at the start of their career, eventually, after we add the "usual suspect" rookie cards, we come to discover the Shoeless Joe RC. Shoeless Joe is simply one of those players who has really transcended sport and entered America's cultural fabric. His play was elite (rookie record .408 avg, and 3rd all time career avg at .356!), and he has a level of fame/infamy that few have attained. That also speaks to these times we are in, where the distinction between good press and bad has all but been obliterated. In this way Shoeless Joe is more relevant than ever. There is the beloved and tragic story, the famous, "Say it ain't so, Joe," mis-quote that became legend. And that famous nickname of course. Then there is the card itself. The purple color. The dapper pose. The age of it, traveling from 1909 to the present. The overall population. There are ~144 Shoeless Joe RCs graded in total by both SGC and PSA, but several crossovers that essentially create phantoms in the pop report. Lots of aspects that delight a collector! In sum: pumped! “I copied Shoeless Joe Jackson’s style because I thought he was the greatest hitter I had ever seen, the greatest natural hitter I ever saw. He’s the guy who made me a hitter.” – Babe Ruth http://i.imgur.com/Mur9ANO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/8s6pGQr.jpg |
I think we can all "forgive the pre-war card." Holy smokes!! Wow!

MattyC,
Congrats on landing a monster of a card. I was looking at the card when it was posted for sale and wondered who was going to land it. Glad to see it was you. Loved the write up on Shoeless Joe as well. |
MattyC bringing the HEAT!!!
I'm pumped for you my brotha!!! |
That Jackson is amazing. One of the most iconic cards in the hobby. And its centered. Nice pick up.
|
Many thanks, guys. When the 2.5s of a card are out of price range, it makes it so hard to land a copy for a collection! Got real lucky stumbling upon it :)

Brand new collector here, my goal is to collect Topps Atlanta Braves from 1966-1996 so here are some of my first purchases made today. I haven't received them yet but I suppose the seller's images will be much better than anything I can produce:

Nostalgic Binge
Picked up a bunch of cards I had as a kid. Couldn't believe the Mantle was dead centered with a focused image and no print dots in the red circle.
My neighbor, who was about 10 years older than me gave me 64, 65 & 68 Mantle's when I was 8 or 9 years old. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps7eeadbvs.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psiasbpzip.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psnopxivh2.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pszipyxboq.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pszeyypxrp.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psfeuphdox.jpg |

Amazing cards guy😄
So happy to pic these two up at a local card show and flea market this morning. |
Grabbed the two 1955 Sports Illustrated inserts last week off the 'bay. Anyone got a 54 Yankees insert they are looking to dump?

Today I road-tripped two hours south for the card show at "The Villages". The Villages is a retirement community between Jacksonville and Tampa. It appears to be several developments that share community buildings, pools, and ballfields. They have a collecting club, and they host a show three times a year.
Before I share some of my purchases, know that I am 62 years old, single, and retired. And let me tell you "The Villages" looks like a fantastic place to re-locate to. I passed several "geezers" (like me) playing in softball games? Collecting clubs? Commuting in golf-carts? On the down side, I had two people tell me that STDs are a somewhat common there as well:D On to the cards. First I bought a collection of 1949 and 1950 Bowman baseball cards. Each 1949 Bowman has two hole punches at each top corner with some kind of fabric in the hole punch. I would guess some kind of mounting system? All the 1950 Bowmans have the players name inked on the front. 179 cards total (83 diff 1949B) and (96 diff 1950 B) commons maybe a few minor stars, I haven't checked what series these are from, I also need to look for the copyright/no copyright info... http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...an%201_14.jpeg My '50 Bowman set is complete, and I need just three super-star cards from '49, so these will be for upgrades and then sold at cost to my OBC buddies. And the cost wasn't too bad either;) Here's the '49 and '50 Bowman stack, along with a $4 1952 Topps Stan Rojek, more on the Stan Rojek card coming up http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/IMG_3494.jpg One of my OBC collecting buddies tells us to keep an eye open for 1952 Topps cards numbered 131-190 with grey card stock. This $4 Stan Rojek has grey card stock, and I scanned the back next to the card that's in my set. Not sure if this is what I was suppose to find or even what the grey card stock means? http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_14.jpeg Lots more to share, but I have to go eat! Larry |

Sounds like a fun show to attend. Did you happen to attend the last Jax Sports Card show at the Ramada? I was able to make it this time and picked up a few items. |
Larry, I'm no expert on 52 Topps, but I believe gray backs are rarer than white.
|
More pick-ups from todays show. 1967 Topps "test" Pirates Stickers $8 $5 $5 $20 before quantity discount. Looks like I might have overpaid a bit here but that Stargell card! I haven't seen these around much. I'm not really collecting this set, so if your interested contact me;)PS Stargell stays put!
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_26.jpeg 1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chips Bob Feller. The Standard Catalog lists NM "value" $500 this card was priced at $30 (6%) plus I got a bit of a quantity discount LOL! Three cards left to complete my set! http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%203_2.jpeghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%204_4.jpeg 1961 Fleer baseball (wax pack insert) decal in the dollar box completes my set! http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...an%201_15.jpeg Enjoy your cards! As far as Gray backs go, lots of stories/info exist on those but from what I have been told, the whole card, including the front looks grayish/different than the non grays. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=128228 I have backs like you have, most look gray and some are blazing white/clean but none of mine are gray backs. ALR-Bishop will know for sure if your's is, but judging by your pic, I am going to say no? EDIT: Just looked at my Rojek, and it looks like your previous copy, not your new one, so you may just have a gray back there?? The front of the card looks normal to me however, but maybe that doesn't mean anything? |
Thanks for the reply Dale. Several months ago I posted a picture of a 1949 Bowman Yogi Berra I picked up that was hole punched and also had the fabric. I purchased that card, from the same dealer as I bought from today. Today I went back and purchased all the commons.
Heres a picture of the the $4 1952 Topps I purchased today back and front along side the cream colored card I have in my set. Hopefully Al will check in and let us know. Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_27.jpeghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_14.jpeg |

Larry Oh, OK, that was you! :D Judging by your pics, Larry, I am going to go out on a limb and say you do indeed have a gray back. The front looks definitely different that your other copy so I'd say you stand a great chance that it is? Great pick up either way, but for a $4.00 gray back, I'd say that's likely one of the best pick-ups I have read on here since I joined! |

So I've wanted this card since the mid 90s. I got side tracked a bunch , learned early on that 1951 bowman was his actual rookie so focused on that . This card makes me happy !

Got this in the mail yesterday. No wrinkles or creases and a pretty nice image.
Other than the Mays, I suddenly have all the money cards in this set (not planned). I guess finishing this set along with '65 will officially be my immediate goals. Thanks for always sharing all of the stuff I see on this board! |

Been wanting to add a Paige card to the mix. I just cannot figure out why it's a 3. No creases or wrinkles anywhere. And those are print spots on his bill, not paper loss, so it just doesn't compute.

suhweet Paige!!!
classic card! |
Solid looking Satch for PSA 3. Nice pickup. That certainly would look right at home in a PSA 4 or 5.
|
Agreed. Great Paige!
|
Thanks guys. I still can't find any wrinkles. A 4-5 shouldn't be out of the question. Regardless, I'm pleased with it in any grade.

Today, in the south part of Jacksonville, a "card show" inside a "card shop"? I attended this event a couple of months ago, and it was OK. But today I was holding a $25 gift card to "Cheesecake Factory", so I made the drive!
The owner of the card shop had recently purchased a collection of mostly EX-MT 1960s Topps cards, (some gorgeous cards) with a few off grade cards mixed in. So I thumbed through the cards and picked out the lower grade stuff, but also picked out an interesting advertising card T.C.G. from 1959 which I had never seen before. In addition to this advertising card I picked out these baseball cards, 2 1952 Topps, 1 1953 Topps, 2 1954 Bowman, 6 1954 Topps, 2 1955 Bowman (Zimmer), 1957 Topps NY Giants team card, and two 1959 Topps team cards. But what I really wanted was that advertising card. Dealer asked for $30 and I countered with $25, which he took which included the advertising card pictured below. There is one similar listed right now on eBay "1959 Bazooka Bloney Pennant" add insert card listed at $69.99 OBO. Interesting that the eBay card notes the "typical slit on the side" and the card I bought today also has this slit but on the opposite side of the card. Does anyone have any additional info on this card? It's slightly smaller than a regular 1959 Topps baseball card and it's paper thin. Thanks in advance. Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...on/Scan_35.jpghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%201_23.jpg |
Down to 61 cards needed for the 61 Topps set...the end is near...
http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/iWEAAO...9C/s-l1600.jpg Tough card, got it for a great price (surprised I won, for you set collectors looking for hi numbers, I got this for 13.50). A little rough for my set but I'll take it. Cerv pops up in a lot of the Mantle books I have read, classic card.. http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/bGUAAO...bi/s-l1600.jpg |
Another lucky ebay victory, $10.88?? I was shocked to wake up in the morning to see I won. Love picking up the lucky gem everyonce in a while, the little victory's of a set collector keep us going...haha..
