September memorabilia pickups
3 Attachment(s)
Here are three recent photo pickups that I thought were worth sharing that just arrived today:
Johnny Vander Meer sharing the pitching form that allowed him to pitch back-to-back no-hitters to the neighbor kids in Vandy's hometown of Midland Park, NJ. This photo was taken on June 16, 1938 at his home the day after he hurled his 2nd consecutive no-no at historic Ebbets Field. From RMY's recent auction that just ended. A rare original action shot of Nolan Ryan's 2nd no-hitter on July 15th, 1973. Ryan has always noted that this was his most overpowering pitching performance in his career. He fanned 17 Tigers en route to his 2nd no-hitter in 1973. The exhibited cropping was used because this photo ran in the Detroit Free Press the next day. In my personal collection I own the catchers mitt that Angels catcher Art Kusnyer used to catch this game as well as a game used ball. This photo came by way of another Ryan advanced collector. A terrific original action photo of Nolan in his 1st year with the Houston Astros 1980. This is perhaps my favorite image from Nolan's stint with the Astros. Also from RMY Auction. Thanks Rhys! |
I love this mug:)

Nice Mug Mike....
I am slowly collecting early Cornell uniforms from across all sports. So far I have early pieces for Basketball, Track, Rowing and Baseball. Was happy to add this exceptional 1920s Letter sweater. Attachment 243672 |

Nice pickups fellas. I just picked up 3 incredibly rare items for my Nebraska Indians collection. A Cover envelope, 2 page brochure, and a letterhead. The back side of the Letterhead details the advertising matter that Green would forward to the town they were going to be playing in. Nothing like this has ever surfaced as far as I know and as long as I've been collecting items from the team. I would dearly love to get a poster, I think that would be the holiest of holy grails for me. I would settle for a photograph of one of the posters..especially the 16 sheet poster. I'm sure those would have been affixed to the side of a building. There has to be a photo of one out there somewhere.

Thanks Joe. WOW on the sweater collection. You have an amazing collection and we all enjoy watching it expand my friend!!!

The photo is totally a contrived shot by the photographer, but I still like it. |
Incredible items Dan! Glad you were able to get them!

Wow, everything in this thread so far is fantastic. Congrats to you all.

Jackie on February 16, 1958 in Jackson, Mississippi. Dubbed Jackie Robinson Day by the NAACP. He had just joined their board. Here he advocates for the peaceful pursuit of civil rights while angry white crowds gathered outside. The only thing I could afford from RMY! :D

September is GREAT SO FAR! Im so glad I posted my goals for the remainder of the year because it resulted in a board member and I working out a trade for this rare fan (particularly in pristine condition) I've been searching for a long time:D
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...sukl0ao7r.jpeg And this pre 1900 heavy clay stein http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...seoxof6ro.jpeg |

I realize this isn't Earth shattering for most, but the Cubbies version of these banks never seem to turn up. I consider it super rare. Cubs collectors are are pretty aggressive and the good stuff doesn't last long. This one is in exceptional condition. It was 4: 00 am when I found it so I took a sec to "make an offer" . The sellers settings were such that I was in the range and it was accepted immediately YEAH! Do any fellow Cubs collectors on the board agree with my scarcity assessment?

Not many. Those that I recall are mostly Nats, Phils, Tigers, White Sox, Twins, Yanks. I would love to hear from others on this topic. I have had a search in my settings for the Cubs forever and don't recall another opportunity to purchase one but I'm sure they are out there considering the number of banks in the Chicagoland area that may have used them. |
First Cubs example I've seen as well. I would add the Reds to the list of "commonly found" examples. I have been underbidder a few times on the Seattle Pilots, and also would love to find an Expos Bank like this (never seen one of those either).
Nice pickup, Mikey!! |

Just snagged a lot of (somewhat) vintage lineup cards in the latest Hunt auction. The Weaver and Schoendienst will fit nicely in my HOFer lineup card collection and Martin is a nice one as well. Will likely consider moving the others (14 in total albeit most are carbon copies)

Anyone know who this is?

I picked up a couple life size stand ups at the antique market yesterday. Dealer couldnt remember the players name, but said he was in hof. Best I can tell 83 was worn by a Doug Atkins. Not that familiar with pre seventies football. Thought these were cool. I Have to do some repair on the hand. If anyone can confirm the player that would be cool.
|
Doug Atkins was a HOFer w/ the Bears. Neat piece. Think it looks like him from what I remember of sending him cards to get autographed.

Saw both of them…3rd Sunday…nice..

Huge Nodder Collection
1 Attachment(s)
Guess I can now say I have Huge Nodder collection. This year the Cincinnati Reds had a feature exhibit on Nodders. They had three of these giant 6 foot bobbleheads custom built (and yes, the heads do bob back and forth). In order to help them recoup the cost of this portion of the exhibit, I purchased 2 of the 3. The third is at auction (ends 30th of Sept) through major league auctions.

Awesome Big Bobble Bobber;)
|
Agree! That's awesome.... a perfect jumbo sized representation of the original. Whoever crafted those did an AMAZING job!
Huge pickups! |
Huge Nodders
Thanks. The quality and detail on these is amazing. I am a big supporter of/and contributor to the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. Each year, in addition to the more permanent exhibits, they curate a feature exhibit. I think their original thoughts were that some local business entity(ies) would step up to purchase these to help offset the cost as they would look great in just about any business (ok, maybe not every business) Sadly, this did not happen. I bought 2, but just can’t take 3.
I am really hoping that someone snags the 3rd one in the major league auction: http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/cin/hof/ You can find the link to this auction under the tab “SHOPS” at the right side of the screen. Dave Grob |

I'll bet the exhibit is pretty cool. |
Wow, is that giant Reds bobblehead cool! :)
|
That is awesome Dave and you got 2!! Perfect addition to your already incredible collection.
|
Looks like they cannot ship it... Bummer :(
Hopefully someone locally will snag that last one. If not a private collector, it would look great in the entry area of almost any restaurant or bar. They might want to put it under an acrylic cover, though.... I would think the temptation to bob its head would be overwhelming! |
Whoa! That thing is cool...and to have two of them??
Here's the direct link to the auction. Can we know what the reserve is? http://auctions.mlb.com/iSynApp/auct...e3=livebid&&qt[0].type=openbrac&qt[1].type=openbrac&qt[1].value2=%2C+&qt[2].type=fieldmatch&qt[2].name=panname_partnername_s&qt[2].value1=mlb&qt[3].type=operor&qt[4].type=fieldmatch&qt[4].name=panname_partnername_s&qt[4].value1=team&qt[5].type=closebrac&qt[6].type=operand&qt[7].type=fieldmatch&qt[7].name=panname_teamname_s&qt[7].value1=reds&qt[8].type=closebrac |
Large Mr. Red Bobblhead
Dan,
Yup.. I bought two.. Just can't do all 3 based on the size/space requirements. As far as the reserve, my guess is not too much more than the opening bid. The detail is incredible and it goes to a good cause, the Reds HoF and Museum as they are just trying to recoup some of the costs for the exhibit. Dave Grob davegrob1@aol.com |
